Trey Lipscomb - MLB News, Rumors, & Updates

Dismissed from big-league camp The Nationals reassigned Lipscomb to minor-league camp Friday.

Impact Lipscomb has logged 214 plate appearances in the big leagues with the Nationals over the past two seasons, but he'll have a tougher time resurfacing in the majors in 2026 after Washington outrighted him off the 40-man roster in November. He'll open the season at Triple-A Rochester and should see ample playing time between multiple infield and outfield spots.

Sent outright to Triple-A The Nationals outrighted Lipscomb to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday.

Impact Lipscomb has lost his spot on the 40-man roster but will remain in the organization. The 25-year-old infielder has slashed just .206/.272/.237 during his time with the Nationals over the last two seasons.

Optioned to Triple-A The Nationals optioned Lipscomb to Triple-A Rochester on Friday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Impact Lipscomb was recalled earlier this week when Luis Garcia went on paternity leave and did not make an appearance. With Garcia back in the fold, Lipscomb will go back to seeing regular reps in the minors.

Recalled from Triple-A The Nationals recalled Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Impact Lipscomb has played some left field for Rochester this season in addition to the infield and will operate in a reserve role for the Nationals. He will likely be up for only a few days while Luis Garcia is on the paternity list.

Sent back to Rochester The Nationals optioned Lipscomb to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday.

Impact With CJ Abrams returning from the injured list Thursday, Lipscomb will head back to the minors after spending roughly a week with the Nats serving as emergency infield depth. The 24-year-old went 2-for-4 with a run scored during his lone start and is slashing .295/.392/.386 through 51 plate appearances in Triple-A.

Recall from Triple-A official The Nationals recalled Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Impact Lipscomb slashed a lowly .200/.268/.232 over 61 games with the big club last season. The 24-year-old will provide depth to an infield that's recently lost CJ Abrams (hip) and Paul DeJong (nose).

APRIL 16, 2025 • ROTOWIRE

Headed to big leagues Lipscomb is headed to Pittsburgh and is expected to join the Nationals' active roster, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Impact Lipscomb will take the roster spot of Paul DeJong, who was hit in the face by a pitch in Tuesday's game. He could see some action at third base while DeJong is out, but Lipscomb will be behind Amed Rosario in the pecking order at the hot corner.

Sent to Triple-A The Nationals optioned Lipscomb to Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Impact Lipscomb was competing for a reserve role with the Nationals but came up short. He'll play multiple infield positions at Rochester while he waits for another opportunity at the big-league level.

MARCH 19, 2025 • ROTOWIRE

In mix for bench job Lipscomb is competing with Jose Tena for an infield utility job and has a .292/.433/.292 slash line through 13 spring games.

Impact Lipscomb and Tena appeared set to compete for the starting job at third base, but Paul DeJong is likely to fill that role after signing in mid-February. Lipscomb received his first taste of the majors last season and had a .200/.268/.232 slash line with one homer and 11 steals in 61 games.

MARCH 16, 2025 • ROTOWIRE

In mix at hot corner Lipscomb will compete with Jose Tena in spring training for the Nationals' starting job at third base, Bobby Blanco of MASN Sports reports.

Impact Lipscomb has a strong camp last spring and wound up bouncing between the majors and Triple-A Rochester all season, but he produced a feeble .200/.268/.232 slash line in 210 plate appearances for the Nats, although he did steal 11 bags in 13 attempts. The 2022 third-round pick did provide reliable defense at the hot corner however, and Washington could view him as the safer option at the position over Tena, who flashed a better bat but a much shakier glove at third base after being acquired in the Lane Thomas trade with Cleveland. If Tena's defense remains an issue in camp, Lipscomb could open the season in the starting nine. Prospect Brady House could also get a look this spring, but he likely needs more development time at Triple-A before he'll be ready to take over the job.

Rejoining big-league club The Nationals recalled Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Impact With the struggling CJ Abrams heading down to the minors for the final week-plus of the season, Lipscomb will return to Washington in order to replenish the Nats' infield depth. The 24-year-old owns just a .515 OPS through 204 plate appearances in the big leagues this season, and he will almost certainly be limited to a bench role while Nasim Nunez takes over for Abrams at shortstop.

Sent down to Rochester The Nationals optioned Lipscomb to Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports.

Impact After being recalled by the Nationals on July 6, Lipscomb slowly saw his playing time dwindle as he struggled to a .152/.211/.182 slash line with a 23.6 percent strikeout rate across 71 plate appearances. With Ildemaro Vargas establishing a regular role at the hot corner, Lipscomb will go back down to Rochester, where he will have an everyday role at third base. Jose Tena was recalled from Rochester in a corresponding move.

AUGUST 10, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

On bench again Thursday Lipscomb is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants.

Impact The righty-hitting Lipscomb had already been excluded from the starting nine in four of the Nationals' last six matchups with right-handed pitchers, but he'll now find himself on the bench Thursday against a lefty (Kyle Harrison). Lipscomb already seems to have lost hold of a regular role at third base to Ildemaro Vargas, and a demotion to the minors could be imminent for the 24-year-old, who is slashing just .152/.211/.182 since he was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on July 6.

AUGUST 8, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Idle again Lipscomb is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Giants.

Impact Lipscomb will cede third-base duties to Ildemaro Vargas for a second consecutive game. It hasn't been announced that Lipscomb is dealing with an injury, so it seems like his playing time is declining. Lipscomb is 4-for-37 (.108) at the plate since the All-Star break while Vargas is 10-for-30 (.333) during that stretch.

AUGUST 6, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

On bench Monday Lipscomb is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Impact Lipscomb will get a chance to clear his head after going 0-for-7 in his last three starts. Ildemaro Vargas will bat eighth and play third base Monday.

AUGUST 5, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Not starting Friday Lipscomb is out of the lineup for Friday's game versus the Brewers.

Impact It's the second straight game on the bench for Lispcomb after he finished July with a .167/.206/.200 slash line and 27 percent strikeout rate over 17 games. Ildemaro Vargas, who posted a .731 OPS last month, will receive another start at third base and could receive more consistent playing time if Lipscomb continues to struggle.

AUGUST 2, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Out of Washington lineup Lipscomb is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game in Arizona, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Impact It's a day off for Lipscomb, who has managed a lowly .406 OPS in July. Ildemaro Vargas will fill in for him at third base as the Nationals try to avoid the sweep.

JULY 31, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Out of Sunday's lineup Lipscomb is not in the lineup for Sunday's game at St. Louis.

Impact Lipscomb started the first two games of the series but will sit for Sunday's finale while in the midst of a 3-for-25 slump. Ildemaro Vargas will man the hot corner and bat seventh for Washington.

JULY 28, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Exiting starting nine Lipscomb is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Padres.

Impact Ildemaro Vargas will get the nod at third base while Lipscomb retreats to the bench for the series finale. While starting in each of the Nationals' last nine games, Lipscomb recorded just six hits in 30 at-bats, bringing his batting average down to a .222 over 51 games with the big club. Lipscomb has made an impact on the bases (11 steals in 13 attempts), but the poor batting average and lack of power (.037 ISO) in his profile makes it difficult to mine much fantasy value from him outside of NL-only leagues or deeper mixed leagues.

JULY 25, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Exiting starting nine Wednesday Lipscomb is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.

Impact Following his promotion from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, Lipscomb started at third base in each of the Nationals' ensuing four games, going 2-for-14 with a run scored. Ildemaro Vargas will fill in for him Wednesday, but Lipscomb should see the bulk of the starts at the hot corner moving forward after the Nationals recently designated Nick Senzel for assignment.

JULY 10, 2024 • ROTOWIRE

Could get regular run at third base Lipscomb will start at third base and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Impact After being called up from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, Lipscomb will make his second straight start at third base after going 1-for-5 with a run scored in the Nationals' 14-6 win in the second game of the series with St. Louis. With Washington designating Nick Senzel for assignment Saturday, Lipscomb should have a fairly clear path to a regular role at the hot corner, if his performance warrants sticking around as an everyday player. Over his four stints in the majors this season, Lipscomb enters Sunday's game with a collective .236/.307/.268 slash line to go with one home run and 10 stolen bases across 137 plate appearances.
