INJURIES

Jumped early in loss McDonald (2-5) took the loss against the Marlins on Saturday, allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks with one strikeout over three innings.
Impact McDonald entered the fourth inning in a 2-2 tie but was unable to record an out and was ultimately charged with three runs in the frame. He lacked command, throwing just 39 of 69 pitches for strikes while generating only two whiffs in his shortest outing of the season. The 25-year-old will carry a 4.93 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 42:18 K:BB across 45.2 innings into a difficult home matchup against Atlanta next weekend.

Takes loss Saturday McDonald (2-4) allowed four runs on six hits, three walks and a hit batsman while striking out four over 3.2 innings to take the loss versus the Cubs on Saturday.
Impact McDonald didn't get much support from his teammates, but he struggled through this outing as well. It took him 92 pitches (53 strikes) to collect his 11 outings, matching his shortest start of the season. McDonald is now at a 4.64 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 41:15 K:BB over 42.2 innings through eight starts. It's not clear when Tyler Mahle (hamstring) will return -- if he can't go next week, McDonald is projected for a road start versus the Marlins.

Logs five frames in no-decision McDonald did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over five innings against the Cubs. He struck out six.
Impact McDonald was largely able to stifle the Cubs offense, as three of the opposition's four hits came in the third inning when Moises Ballesteros drove in the club's lone run. Aside from a seven-run outing May 22 against the White Sox, McDonald has been effective since being recalled and inserted into the rotation at the start of May. The 25-year-old will take a 2-3 record with a 4.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 37:12 K:BB across 39 innings (seven starts) into his next outing, tentatively scheduled for Saturday in a home rematch with the Cubs.

Yields three runs in loss Tuesday McDonald (2-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Brewers, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts across five innings.
Impact McDonald got into trouble in the first inning, walking each of the first two batters before serving up a three-run homer to Jake Bauers. The right-hander settled in the rest of the way, but the damage was done, and the San Francisco offense was unable to do much of anything against Kyle Harrison. In six starts this season, McDonald has a 4.50 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 31:9 K:BB across 34 innings. He's lined up to face the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Sunday.

Logs quality start in loss McDonald (2-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out six.
Impact McDonald was sharp Wednesday, blanking the Diamondbacks through five innings. However, he'd give up two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh, which proved to be enough to stick him with the loss in a 3-2 defeat. Still, it was a nice bounce-back performance from McDonald, after he was tagged for seven runs in 3.2 innings his last time out against the White Sox. It remains to be seen whether or not the 25-year-old McDonald will remain in San Francisco's rotation, with Logan Webb (knee) expected to return this weekend.

Will get another start McDonald will start Wednesday's game at home versus the Diamondbacks, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact With Logan Webb (knee) slated to rejoin the rotation this weekend, it could be McDonald's final start with the big club before he's sent back to Triple-A Sacramento. McDonald has offered more good than bad with the Giants but was roughed up his last time out, yielding seven runs over 3.2 frames.

Roughed up by White Sox McDonald (2-1) allowed seven runs on three hits, one walk and two hit batsmen while striking out four over 3.2 innings to take the loss versus the White Sox on Friday.
Impact McDonald was perfect the first time through the order but completely unraveled in the fourth inning. He was pulled after giving up five runs, but Ryan Borucki also struggled, allowing two inherited runners to score. This was a terrible time for McDonald to have a bad start, as it came on the same day Logan Webb (knee) was making his first, and likely only, rehab start. McDonald is now at a 4.76 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 21:4 K:BB through 22.2 innings over four starts in the majors this year. His performance Friday likely made the Giants' decision easier when they need to clear a 26-man roster spot for Webb's return next week, though an official decision from the team is likely a few days away.

Pitches into seventh inning again McDonald (2-0) allowed one run on five hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out five over 6.2 innings to earn the win Saturday over the Athletics.
Impact McDonald has shown the ability to provide length early in his stay in the majors, which could help him stick around even when Logan Webb (knee) is healthy, though that's not guaranteed. Through three starts with the Giants this season, McDonald has a 2.37 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB over 19 innings. If Webb is able to return next week when first eligible for activation from the injured list, there should be some clarity on McDonald's role at that time.

Logs 5.1 frames in no-decision McDonald did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Dodgers. He struck out four.
Impact McDonald wasn't nearly as dominant in his second big-league start of the year compared to his seven-inning gem May 4 against the Padres, but he still was able to mitigate damage. The right-hander held the Dodgers scoreless through the first three innings before surrendering two runs in the fourth frame and a solo homer to Max Muncy in the sixth inning prior to being pulled. Through two starts, McDonald owns a 2.92 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with a 12:2 K:BB across 12.1 innings. With Logan Webb (knee) sidelined, McDonald figures to stick in the rotation for the time being, with his next start tentatively lined up for Saturday against the Athletics.

Moving into rotation Monday McDonald is slated to start Monday's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
Impact After being optioned to Triple-A Sacramento last Tuesday, McDonald was recalled just four days later after the Giants lost ace Logan Webb (knee) to the injured list. As expected, McDonald will end up moving into Webb's spot in the rotation Monday in what will be his second big-league start of the season. McDonald dazzled in his 2026 MLB debut with eight strikeouts over seven innings of one-run ball in a win over the Padres, but he's been far less stellar over a larger sample of five starts at Triple-A (5.40 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 12:15 K:BB in 15 innings). He'll tentatively line up for two starts this week, with his second turn set to come over the weekend against the Athletics at hitter-friendly Sutter Health Park.

Dodgers take on the Giants in first of 4-game series

MAY 11 • Associated Press
Called up to fill rotation spot San Francisco recalled McDonald from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.
Impact McDonald's call-up is the result of Logan Webb (knee) landing on the injured list. It thus seems likely that McDonald will slide into Webb's spot in the rotation, and the former could make his next start Monday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. McDonald impressed in his first (and, so far, only) outing with the Giants this season, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out eight batters over seven innings in a win over the Padres last Monday.
