Pitches into seventh inning again
McDonald (2-0) allowed one run on five hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out five over 6.2 innings to earn the win Saturday over the Athletics.
Impact
McDonald has shown the ability to provide length early in his stay in the majors, which could help him stick around even when Logan Webb (knee) is healthy, though that's not guaranteed. Through three starts with the Giants this season, McDonald has a 2.37 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB over 19 innings. If Webb is able to return next week when first eligible for activation from the injured list, there should be some clarity on McDonald's role at that time.

Logs 5.1 frames in no-decision
McDonald did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Dodgers. He struck out four.
Impact
McDonald wasn't nearly as dominant in his second big-league start of the year compared to his seven-inning gem May 4 against the Padres, but he still was able to mitigate damage. The right-hander held the Dodgers scoreless through the first three innings before surrendering two runs in the fourth frame and a solo homer to Max Muncy in the sixth inning prior to being pulled. Through two starts, McDonald owns a 2.92 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with a 12:2 K:BB across 12.1 innings. With Logan Webb (knee) sidelined, McDonald figures to stick in the rotation for the time being, with his next start tentatively lined up for Saturday against the Athletics.

Moving into rotation Monday
McDonald is slated to start Monday's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
Impact
After being optioned to Triple-A Sacramento last Tuesday, McDonald was recalled just four days later after the Giants lost ace Logan Webb (knee) to the injured list. As expected, McDonald will end up moving into Webb's spot in the rotation Monday in what will be his second big-league start of the season. McDonald dazzled in his 2026 MLB debut with eight strikeouts over seven innings of one-run ball in a win over the Padres, but he's been far less stellar over a larger sample of five starts at Triple-A (5.40 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 12:15 K:BB in 15 innings). He'll tentatively line up for two starts this week, with his second turn set to come over the weekend against the Athletics at hitter-friendly Sutter Health Park.

Called up to fill rotation spot
San Francisco recalled McDonald from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.
Impact
McDonald's call-up is the result of Logan Webb (knee) landing on the injured list. It thus seems likely that McDonald will slide into Webb's spot in the rotation, and the former could make his next start Monday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. McDonald impressed in his first (and, so far, only) outing with the Giants this season, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out eight batters over seven innings in a win over the Padres last Monday.

Heading back to Triple-A
The Giants optioned Trevor McDonald to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact
McDonald tossed a seven inning spot start Monday, allowing just one run on two hits and no free passes along with eighth strikeouts. However, the San Francisco top prospect is being sent back down to make room for Joel Peguero (hamstring), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Tuesday.

Earns victory in season debut
McDonald (1-0) earned the win over San Diego on Monday, tossing seven innings during which he allowed one run on two hits and no walks while striking out eight batters.
Impact
McDonald is one of San Francisco's top pitching prospects and was called up from Triple-A ahead of Monday's matchup. He had previously thrown 18 major-league innings across the 2024-25 campaigns. The right-hander was very impressive in his first start of 2026, racking up eight punchouts with no walks while breezing through seven frames on just 81 pitches. The only run he gave up came on a first-inning homer by Jackson Merrill. McDonald certainly pitched well enough to earn another start, but there isn't an obvious spot for him in the Giants' rotation, so it will be interesting to see what San Francisco opts to do with him moving forward.

Recalled ahead of Monday's start
The Giants recalled McDonald from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of his start against the Padres on Monday.
Impact
McDonald served as the Giants' 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader against the Phillies, though he went unused out of the bullpen. Southpaw reliever Erik Miller (back) was placed on the 15-day IL in a corresponding move, so Monday's outing will likely be a spot start for McDonald. The 25-year-old right-hander has appeared in five games (four starts) in Triple-A and has a 5.40 ERA and 1.53 WHIP across 15 innings.

Set for big-league start Monday
McDonald is slated to be called up from Triple-A Sacramento and start Monday's series opener on the mound against the Padres.
Impact
McDonald is on track to return to the major-league roster after being sent down Friday. The right-hander has appeared in five contests, including four starts, with Sacramento this season, posting a 5.40 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with 12 strikeouts over 15 innings. McDonald has issued 15 free passes at the Triple-A level, and if he's going to be successful against the Padres, he'll have to do a better job limiting the baserunners.

Returned to Triple-A
The Giants optioned McDonald to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday.
Impact
McDonald had been up with the Giants to serve as their 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader with the Astros. After going unused out of the bullpen in either contest, he was sent back to Sacramento, where he'll continue to work out of the rotation.

Serving as 27th man
The Giants recalled McDonald from Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday.
Impact
He will be the team's 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader versus the Phillies. The Giants have not announced a starting pitcher for the nightcap, but McDonald is a candidate to draw that assignment or eat some innings in long relief. He holds a 5.40 ERA and 12:15 K:BB in 15 innings this season with Sacramento.

Loses race for bullpen spot
The Giants optioned McDonald to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact
McDonald got off to a fast start this spring and looked to have a real chance at making the Giants' Opening Day bullpen as a long reliever. However, after finishing the Cactus League with a 6.94 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 11.2 frames, he'll head back to Sacramento to get back on track. The 25-year-old righty has looked good during his limited MLB opportunities (1.50 ERA, 0.89 WHIP through 18 IP), so the Giants may still be willing to add him to their rotation if injuries begin to arise among their starters.

Impact
McDonald was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in September of last season, recording a 1.80 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 14:2 K:BB across 15 innings in three big-league appearances, including two starts. The right-hander has impressed this spring, and while there isn't expected to be room for him in the starting rotation just yet, he has a good chance to open the season in the bullpen. If injuries arise among San Francisco's starters during the season, the 25-year-old would be a candidate to move into the rotation.

Fans 10 in first career win
McDonald (1-0) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out 10 without walking a batter over seven innings to earn the win over the Rockies on Friday.
Impact
McDonald gave up a three-run home run to Ezequiel Tovar in the fifth inning but was otherwise quite stingy in a dominant win. This was McDonald's third appearance in the majors this year, and he finished the campaign allowing six runs over 15 innings while adding a 14:2 K:BB. It was a strong showing in his late-season audition, which reflects better than his 5.37 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 144:62 K:BB over 142.1 innings at Triple-A Sacramento. McDonald has likely done enough to be in the conversation for a big-league rotation spot in the spring.
