Earns fifth win Thursday
Thornton (5-4) worked around a walk to pitch a scoreless inning of relief and earn the win in Thursday's 3-2, extra-innings victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out one.
Impact
Thornton was the last of five Chicago pitchers to take the mound Thursday, working the top of the 11th inning in a 2-2 tie. The righty picked up the win when Pete Crow-Armstrong stole third base in the bottom of the 11th, then came around to score on a throwing error. Thornton has been solid this year with a 2.78 ERA across 35.2 innings, but he's in a crowded back-end mix that features Jacob Webb and the newly acquired Ryan Zeferjahn. Daniel Palencia (elbow) should also be back from the injured list in the near future.

Blows save Wednesday
Thornton (3-4) allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk while retiring only one batter to blow the save and take the loss Wednesday against the Cardinals.
Impact
Thornton got the bottom of the 10th inning staked to a 2-0 lead thanks to a Pete Crow-Armstrong home run. The righty started the frame by allowing a soft single to Lars Nootbar, and things quickly unraveled from there, culminating in a walkoff, two-run double by Ivan Herrera. This was just the second time in his last nine appearances that Thornton has been scored on, and the veteran still has a solid 3.03 ERA across 32.2 innings overall.

Works eighth inning Sunday
Thornton (heel) struck out two batters and allowed one hit over a scoreless inning of relief in Sunday's 8-7 loss to the Pirates.
Impact
Thornton was forced out of his prior appearance in Monday's 8-6 extra-inning loss to Detroit when he was struck on the left foot by a comebacker, with the reliever later getting diagnosed with a heel contusion. He was able to avoid a stint on the injured list, and after a few days of rest and recovery, Thornton stepped in to pitch a scoreless eighth inning in the Cubs' final game in Pittsburgh. Thornton has ascended into a key late-inning role in an injury-plagued Cubs bullpen, but he could fall down the pecking order soon. Daniel Palencia (elbow) is close to beginning a rehab assignment and could be back from the injured list before the middle of August, and Chicago could also add another high-leverage piece or two to its bullpen ahead of next Monday's trade deadline.

Departs with foot injury
Thornton was removed from Monday's game against the Tigers after being struck on the left foot by a comebacker, Mike McGraw of the Chicago Daily Herald reports.
Impact
Thornton was deployed in the top of the 10th inning, but the first batter of the frame drilled the right-hander with a comebacker, forcing Thornton to exit the matchup. The 32-year-old was able to put some weight on his foot as he walked off the field and will likely be sent for further evaluation.

Collects one-out save
Thornton recorded a save against the Reds on Saturday, retiring the only batter he faced on a groundout.
Impact
Ryan Rolison was handed the ball in the ninth inning with Chicago up 5-3, but he was lifted with two outs after putting runners on second and third base. Thornton was summoned to go head-to-head with Sal Stewart, and the game ended when Stewart grounded out to second. Thornton thus logged his third save of the season and notched his ninth scoreless appearance across his past 10 outings. Since Daniel Palencia (elbow) landed on the injured list June 16, four different Cubs relievers have notched a save, and three (including Thornton) have posted multiple saves. One of those three pitchers (Jordan Wicks) has since been sent down to the minors, so it appears Thornton and Jacob Webb are sharing closer duties for the time being.

Records second save Tuesday
Thornton fired a scoreless ninth inning with a strikeout to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Orioles.
Impact
Thornton was the fifth Chicago pitcher used in the game, and he retired Baltimore in order to record his second save of the season. The righty has tallied both of those saves in the past week with Daniel Palencia (elbow) still on the injured list and not set to return until after the All-Star break. Jacob Webb has been the Cubs' top option for saves with Palencia on the shelf, though he was called on in the seventh inning Tuesday to help his team get out of a bases-loaded jam. Thornton has been solid overall with a 2.63 ERA out of the bullpen, though he does only have 13 strikeouts across 27.1 innings of work, which doesn't make him an ideal closer candidate.

Steps in for save
Thornton earned a save against the Mets on Thursday, retiring all three batters he faced in the 10th inning.
Impact
The Cubs are without closer Daniel Palencia, who is on the injured list due to a flexor strain. Jacob Webb earned the team's first save following Palencia's injury, but he was deployed in the ninth inning Thursday and kept the game tied. After Chicago took a one-run lead in the top of the 10th, Thornton was called upon to close things out. He needed just 10 pitches to retire the side in order and notch the second save of his eight-year big-league career. The closer situation for the Cubs is hazy with Palencia out of the picture, so Thornton could be called upon again to close given his strong 2.86 ERA and 1.05 WHIP through 17 outings this season. However, he doesn't fit the typical closer profile, as he's recorded only 10 strikeouts across 22 innings.
