Grisham's 2-run HR in 10th gives Padres 4-2 win over Pirates

Trent Grisham hit a two-run walkoff home run in the 10th inning and the San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 to take two of three

On bench again Friday Grisham remains on the bench Friday against the Pirates.

Impact The Padres will face their second straight southpaw (Jose Quintana), so Grisham will sit for the second straight game. He had effectively a true everyday role in center field for the first month of the season, but he's since slipped into a platoon with Jose Azocar in center field, with Azocar starting ahead of Grisham against five of the last six lefties the team has faced. Grisham is hitting just .157/.258/.250 on the season, so it's tough to say he deserves to reclaim the everyday job.

Grisham actually has a reverse platoon split thus far in his career, however, with a 113 wRC+ against lefties and a 100 wRC+ against righties, so such a setup might not be the way to get the most out of him. Impact Austin Nola received a look out of the leadoff spot Opening Day, but Grisham has since slotted in atop the lineup in each of the Padres' subsequent six games. Grisham has gone just 2-for-21 while reaching base at a .174 clip during that stretch, however, so it wouldn't be surprising if manager Bob Melvin elected to shuffle the lineup if the 25-year-old doesn't get going at the plate soon.

Impact That Grisham will be the Padres' primary center fielder comes as no surprise, though his importance there is considerably heightened by the fact that, per Cassavell, the team doesn't have an obvious backup at the position. Manager Bob Melvin did mention, however, that CJ Abrams could get some reps there, which would give him a path to a major-league roster spot even after Fernando Tatis (wrist) returns to action. In addition to Abrams, Jurickson Profar and Wil Myers could be used to man center if needed, though neither has done particularly well when tried at the position in the past.
