INJURIES

Earns one-out win Watson (1-0) recorded a one-out win Monday against the Astros after retiring the only batter he faced.
Impact Watson entered the game in the top of the seventh inning with two outs, and he retired Yordan Alvarez on a groundout to pick up his first win of the campaign. Watson has posted two scoreless appearances this season, allowing one hit with a walk and a strikeout across two innings.

Notches another save Watson notched a save Tuesday against the Mariners after tossing a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit.
Impact Watson threw 12 of his 17 pitches for strikes and, even though he allowed a two-out single to Kyle Lewis, he slammed the door after Kyle Seager grounded out for the final out of the game. Watson has gone 2-for-2 in save opportunities this season and should remain as the team's primary closer moving forward if he keeps tossing the ball like he has done it all year long. He owns a 0.64 ERA and has allowed just one earned run in 14 innings across 16 appearances.

Picks up first save of season Watson notched the save Saturday against the Diamondbacks after tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
Impact Watson threw nine of his 13 pitches for strikes Saturday on route to his first save of the season. He hasn't allowed runs in any of his last 10 appearances out of the bullpen, notching five holds, a win, a save and a 0.58 WHIP in that stretch. In fact, Watson has allowed runs just once this season and has an excellent 0.75 ERA in 14 appearances in 2020.

Collects win Watson (1-0) pitched a third of an inning and earned the win in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
Impact After starter Johnny Cueto gave up a solo home run to Eduardo Escobar and walked Jake Lamb, Watson was brought in with two outs in the seventh inning. Watson managed to pick off Lamb to end the threat, and the Giants took the lead in the eighth to reward the reliever with the win. Through 11 innings, Watson has a sparking 0.82 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and nine strikeouts. He is likely to see late-inning assignments, although he has yet to record a save this season.

Picks up sixth hold Watson pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing a walk and striking out one to earn a hold in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Diamondbacks.
Impact Watson was able to protect a 4-2 lead in eighth inning, and Tyler Rogers was perfect for the save in the ninth. That duo appears to have the inside track for saves this season. Through 10.2 innings this season, Watson has a 0.84 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB across 12 appearances. Rogers has a 5.71 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, but he's also collected two saves to Watson's zero. The 35-year-old Watson has produced six holds, and should continue to see high-leverage work.

Longoria's 300th homer propels Giants past Diamondbacks 6-2

Effective run of late Watson has yet to get a save opportunity this season, but he has logged five straight scoreless appearances while collecting three holds over that span.
Impact Trevor Gott opened the year with saves in four of his first five appearances, but he has been dreadful of late, giving up 11 earned runs while blowing two saves over his last 1.1 innings, so he is seemingly out as the Giants' closer. Watson could be the next man up, but Tyler Rogers has a similar scoreless streak and is 1-for-2 on save chances this season. If it is a committee, it may be tricky to extract value from the situation, but it's possible one of Watson, Rogers or a dark horse candidate could emerge now that Gott has seemingly pitched himself out of the ninth inning.

Where’s Tony Watson? The Giants lefty reliever is nowhere to be found.

Strikes out side Anderson struck out the side in the seventh inning Saturday against the Dodgers.
Impact He did not allow a baserunner and threw 10 of 17 pitches for strikes. Tony Watson followed him and got two outs, then Tyler Rogers got one out and Trevor Gott recorded the save in the ninth inning, but not before giving up an earned run. None of the three relievers who followed Anderson recorded a strikeout, so while he did not get the save opportunity, he was the most impressive of San Francisco's relievers while stymying the best offense in the National League.

Traditional closer unlikely for SF Watson should operate in a high-leverage role in 2020, but it's unlikely manager Gabe Kapler utilizes traditional late-inning roles, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact The left-hander was battling some tightness in his left shoulder during spring training, but he was able to get healthy during the shutdown and has been slowing ramping things up in summer camp. Watson has 30 career saves and brings a distinguished veteran presence compared to most of the Giants' bullpen, but Kapler is expected rely on a matchup-based approach, which could mean no official closer. Watson said, "There's probably not established roles. We're going to be mixing and matching and trying to figure out how to win a game every night." Tyler Rogers and Trevor Gott could also factor into that ninth-inning mix, but none of the three seem likely to receive consistent save opportunities in the shortened season.
