Contract selected for MLB debut
The Pirates selected Harrington's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis ahead of his scheduled start against the Rays on Tuesday.
Impact
The right-hander will make his MLB debut in Tampa Bay, with closer David Bednar being sent to Triple-A to free up space on the big-league roster. Harrington just missed out on being included in Pittsburgh's season-opening rotation, but he'll still end up making his first start of 2025 in the majors. The 23-year-old split most of 2024 between Double-A Altoona and Indianapolis, and he finished the year with a 2.61 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 115:19 K:BB across 117.1 innings. Harrington may need to deliver a strong debut in order to receive additional turns through the rotation.

Set to make MLB debut Tuesday
The Pirates will call up Harrington to make his major-league debut Tuesday against the Rays, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact
Harrington was beat out by Carmen Mlodzinski for the final spot in the Pirates' rotation, but his first start this season will wind up coming in the big leagues. The 23-year-old collected a 2.61 ERA and 115:19 K:BB over 117.1 innings across three levels in the minors last season. Harrington is known more for his command and control than his ability to miss bats, but he did show a little velocity uptick this spring. It might be just a spot start for the young righty, but if he impresses it's possible he'll be kept in the rotation over Mlodzinski.

To report to minors camp
Harrington was reassigned to minor-league spring training Monday.
Impact
It was reported earlier in the day that Harrington appeared to be on the outside of the Opening Day roster looking in, and the team made the move official Monday evening. Still, the future is bright for the 23-year-old right-hander, who will be in the mix for a mid-season promotion.

Impact
After Jared Jones went down with an elbow injury last week that could result in an extended absence, Harrington appeared to be the leading contender to fill his spot in the rotation. Harrington, who will make his final spring start Monday versus the Twins, has posted a 2.70 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB in 6.2 innings through his first three Grapefruit League outings, but the Pirates seemingly aren't keen on starting up his MLB service clock just yet. Instead, with Carmen Mlodzinski getting stretched out to three innings in his most recent spring outing, the Pirates could elect to use him as a bulk reliever or starter when the fifth spot in the rotation comes up.

Impresses in spring start
Harrington allowed one earned run on one hit and one walk while striking out three across 3.2 innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies.
Impact
Harrington has primarily worked in back fields this spring by pitching live batting practices and sim innings, as Monday marked only his third outing of spring. Per Alex Stumpf of MLB.com, the Pirates have been impressed with the data they've seen from Harrington in all of his work this spring, and he sat 93 mph on his fastball while averaging over 2,600 rpm on his slide against the Phillies. Despite being the last of the Pirates' big-name pitching prospects to remain in big-league camp, manager Derek Shelton would only say that Harrington's status would be decided within the next week.

Still in MLB camp
Harrington remains in big-league camp and will start Tuesday against the Phillies, Tribune-Review Sports reports.
Impact
Harrington didn't come into spring training with as much buzz as Bubba Chandler, but he's a very good pitching prospect in his own right and is the last prospect left competing for a rotation spot. Harrington could just be an insurance policy in case one of the Pirates' other starters gets injured before the start of the season, but Harrington looked sharp while striking out five batters over three innings in an intrasquad game last week, per Chris Clegg of The Dynasty Dugout.

Falters in Triple-A debut
Harrington debuted for Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday after being promoted from Double-A Altoona earlier in the day and struck out four over 5.2 innings while taking a no-decision...
Impact
Harrington was advanced to the Pirates' top affiliate after he turned in a 2.24 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 74:10 K:BB in 68.1 innings over 13 outings with Altoona. Though he turned in poor results in his Triple-A debut, Harrington continued his strike-throwing ways, as he found the zone on 52 of his 72 pitches on the afternoon. The 23-year-old righty will most likely finish out the 2024 season with Indianapolis, though it's not entirely out of the question for him to get the call to Pittsburgh if he impresses in his subsequent Triple-A outings.

Dominant at Double-A
Harrington has thrown five-plus innings in eight straight starts for Double-A Altoona, logging a 2.80 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 47 strikeouts in 45 innings over that span.
Impact
Harrington's season numbers are even better, but he wasn't pitching as deep into games early in the season. The 23-year-old righty matched a career high with 11 strikeouts in his most recent start July 10 against Bowie. He has three above-average or better offerings (fastball, changeup, slider) and also throws a cutter and a curveball. His 3.5 percent walk rate is the fourth-best mark among Double-A pitchers who have thrown at least 50 innings.

Having shoulder examined
Harrington will be examined for a right shoulder injury, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact
Harrington had been scheduled to appear in the Spring Breakout series, but that will not happen now. The 22-year-old was a first-round pick of the Pirates in the 2022 Draft and had an excellent first pro season, collecting a 3.53 ERA and 146:41 K:BB over 127.1 frames between Low-A Bradenton and High-A Greensboro.
