Adding positional versatility
Jones was taking defensive reps at third base and left field on back fields Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Jones has spent most of his professional career at first base, though he appeared in the outfield for 70 games at Triple-A Round Rock in 2019. He also has previous experience at third base, though it was much less significant. Jones made his major-league debut in 2020, though he's not likely to make the Opening Day roster.

Bound for bench
Jones is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
The righty-hitting Jones' absence from the lineup against a left-handed starting pitcher (Adrian Morejon) suggests he'll likely be on the outs for a spot in the everyday lineup after Houston returned Michael Brantley (quadriceps) from the injured list Saturday. Jones had started at first base or designated hitter in each of Houston's previous four games, going 4-for-15 with a home run, a double and a walk.

Hits first big-league homer
Jones went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a loss to San Diego on Saturday.
Impact
With Houston down by 10 runs in the fifth inning, Jones put up a murmur of protest with a 405-foot shot to left field. The homer was the first of his career and his fourth overall hit in 17 at-bats. Jones hit 22 long balls in 447 at-bats at the Triple-A level in 2019.

Should benefit from Bregman injury
Jones will start at first base and bat eighth Thursday against the Rockies, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The Astros will be without three lineup mainstays for the foreseeable future after Alex Bregman (hamstring) joined Yordan Alvarez (knee) and Michael Brantley (quadriceps) on the injured list Thursday, which should open up opportunities for the newly recalled Jones to see steady playing time. Jones will pick up a second straight start in the series finale at Coors Field after he served as the Astros' designated hitter in Wednesday's 13-6 win, going 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Starts at DH
Jones started at designated hitter and went 2-for-5 with two RBI in Wednesday's 13-6 win over the Rockies.
Impact
Jones made his first start since being called up after the Astros placed primary DH Yordan Alvarez (knee) on the injured list. Abraham Toro served as DH the previous three games, but it was Jones' turn Wednesday, and there will be more players used at DH before the end of the season. The team announced Alvarez will undergo season-ending surgery, so there is an opportunity for Jones, who had an .889 OPS at Triple-A Round Rock in 2019, to claim the job as the primary DH.

Hitless in debut
Jones went 0-for-2 as the starting designated hitter in Sunday's 7-6 loss to the Mariners.
Impact
Jones, who was recalled Saturday after the Astros placed Aledmys Diaz (groin) on the injured list, made his MLB debut. As a right-handed batter, he got the start against a left-hander instead of lefty-hitting Kyle Tucker. The switch-hitting Abraham Toro, who replaced Jones mid-game Sunday, is also an option going forward against southpaws.

ROTOWIRE
Starting against lefty
Jones will make his first big-league start Sunday at designated hitter while batting seventh against the Mariners.
Impact
With lefty Yusei Kikuchi on the bump for Seattle, the hulking right-hander will get the nod. Jones is known partly for his strong defense at first base, but he will be eased in as a hitter only in his first MLB game. The 6-foot-7, 225-pound first baseman hit .291/.388/.501 with 22 home runs, a 12.8 percent walk rate and a 21.1 percent strikeout rate in 125 games at Triple-A last season.
