Rays ace McClanahan to face hitters for the first time since elbow surgery

Tampa Bay Rays ace Shane McClanahan is set to face hitters for the first time next week since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year

Pete Fairbanks - Won't return this season Fairbanks (lat) is progressing in his rehab program but won't have enough time to rejoin the Rays before the end of the regular season, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports.
Impact The right-hander landed on the shelf in mid-August due to a lat strain and was able to resume throwing at the end of the month, but he won't have enough time to build up to game readiness before the end of the campaign. Fairbanks will finish the season with 23 saves and a 3.57 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB across 45.1 innings. He should be fully healthy in plenty of time for spring training.

Richie Palacios - Starting rehab assignment Palacios (knee) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Palacios will play a few rehab games with Durham before returning to the Rays during the final week of the series if all goes well. The utility player has been sidelined since early August with a right knee sprain.

Jeffrey Springs - Ruled out for rest of season Rays manager Kevin Cash said Tuesday that Springs (elbow) is feeling better but will not return this season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Springs landed on the 15-day injured list earlier this month with left elbow fatigue, roughly six weeks after he returned to the majors following a long rehab from Tommy John surgery. It does not seem at this point that Springs' current elbow issue is overly concerning, but there would be little wisdom in rushing him back before the regular season concludes.

Cooper Kinney - Finishes year on IL High-A Bowling Green placed Kinney on the 7-day injured list Sept. 6 with an undisclosed injury.
Impact It's unclear what injury Kinney is dealing with, but he missed a little over three weeks with an undisclosed injury in August that also required a stint on the IL, so this latest issue may have been an aggravation. Injuries have already played a big role in Kinney's career, as shoulder surgery cost him all of 2022. Kinney was solid at Single-A in 2023 (110 wRC+), but he hit for significantly more power in his second season since the surgery. Kinney slashed .289/.352/.494 with 10 homers, 32 doubles, six steals and a 22.2 percent strikeout rate in 87 games for the Hot Rods. A lefty hitter who played the majority of his games at second base, Kinney does not project to offer positive defensive value, so he'll need to carry over his offensive success next year in his Double-A debut.
