INJURIES

Retires from professional baseball Garrett has announced his retirement from professional baseball, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Garrett was released by the Nationals back in April before catching on with the Kiwoom Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization. The 29-year-old boasts a career .276/.341/.492 batting line over parts of three major-league seasons, but he never looked the same after reconstructive surgery on his left ankle in August 2023.
SEPTEMBER 24, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Released by Washington The Nationals released Garrett on Tuesday, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Garrett was dropped from the Nationals' 40-man roster in February and got off to a horrendous start at Triple-A Rochester, slashing .087/.177/.130 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and 5:22 BB:K across 51 plate appearances. The 29-year-old will look for a much needed change of scenery.
APRIL 29, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Remains in organization Garrett cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday.
Impact The 29-year-old was designated for assignment by the Nationals last week but will stick in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Garrett appeared in just two MLB games last season and spent most of the campaign at Rochester, where he had a .674 OPS in 71 contests.
MARCH 4, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Dropped from 40-man roster The Nationals designated Garrett for assignment Thursday.
Impact Garrett was the casualty from the 40-man roster with the Nationals needing to clear a spot for reliever Kyle Finnegan, who officially re-signed with the club on a one-year deal. Though he's slashed an impressive .276/.341/.492 (125 wRC+) over 361 plate appearances across parts of three big-league seasons, Garrett missed most of the 2024 campaign while recovering from the left ankle reconstruction surgery he underwent last August. He finished the season healthy, but Garrettt's standing as a 29-year-old, bat-first player who profiles best as a short-side platoon designated hitter made him an expendable piece for Washington.
FEBRUARY 27, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Homer, three hits in season debut Garrett went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, a double, an additional run scored and an additional RBI in Friday's 9-1 win over the Phillies.
Impact Garrett had to wait until the last week of the season to rejoin the Nats, though he certainly made the opportunity count, picking up three hits including a 431-foot homer off Ranger Suarez in the first inning. Garrett slashed .249/.348/.333 with just three home runs in 79 games with Triple-A Rochester this season after batting .269 with an .800 OPS in 268 plate appearances with the Nats last year.
SEPTEMBER 28, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Back in big leagues The Nationals recalled Garrett from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Impact Garrett was a useful short-side platoon player for the Nationals in 2023 when he posted an .839 OPS against left-handed pitching, but he's spent all of 2024 in the minors until now and managed just a .681 OPS. The 28-year-old could be sent back down when Andres Chaparro returns from the paternity list later this week.
SEPTEMBER 24, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Activated and optioned The Nationals activated Garrett (ankle) from the 10-day injured list Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Rochester, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Garrett had just had his rehab assignment moved from Double-A Harrisburg to Rochester and the Nats have elected to keep him there for a while longer. Coming back from reconstructive surgery on his left ankle, Garrett has gone 7-for-31 with a 9:7 K:BB over 40 plate appearances so far on his rehab assignment. The 28-year-old should be back with the Nationals soon enough, particularly with Lane Thomas (knee) not out indefinitely, but the club wants Garrett to sharpen things up a bit more first.
APRIL 25, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Playing in simulated game Garrett (lower leg) will play in a simulated game Monday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact It will be the first time Garrett has played in a game setting since he needed surgery last August on his left fibula and ankle. The Nationals are still holding out hope that the 28-year-old can be ready for Opening Day, but it's going to be close. Garrett is slated to see lots of action at designated hitter and also the outfield for the Nats this season.
MARCH 4, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Running out of time to avoid IL Garrett (lower leg) has been hitting and running the bases in minor-league intrasquad games, but he has yet to play defense and isn't ready to play a full nine innings, Mark Zucker...
Impact Nationals manager Dave Martinez still believes Garrett could be on the Opening Day roster, however. "I'm still optimistic that he can do it," Martinez said Saturday. "He's working really hard. Probably the next 10-12 days are going to really determine where he's at. They're pushing him, and he wants to be pushed." However, the 28-year-old could be running out of time to get in enough Grapefruit League action that the team will be comfortable having him on the 26-man roster to begin the season, even if he's limited initially to DH duties. If Garrett does wind up on the injured list, it might open the door for top prospect James Wood to make the Opening Day roster.
MARCH 2, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Participating in most drills at camp Garrett (fibula/ankle) is running at full speed and is taking live batting practice during the early stages of spring training, but the Nationals don't have a timeline for when he'...
Impact Zuckerman previously reported last week that Garrett would be a full participant at camp, and while that's largely been the case thus far, the Nationals are still easing the 28-year-old along slowly to some degree as he makes his way back from late-August surgery to repair a broken left fibula and address related ankle damage. In addition to delaying Garrett's inclusion in the spring lineup, the Nationals have also been holding him out of certain running drills, including one Wednesday that all of the team's other healthy position players took part in. Garrett thus far hasn't reported any setbacks with his left leg and remains a realistic option for the Nationals' Opening Day roster, but his status won't be officially known until the latter stages of spring training.
FEBRUARY 21, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Resumes running Garrett (fibula) said that he's no longer wearing a boot on his left foot and was able to resume running on a treadmill Monday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Garret underwent surgery in late August to address a fractured fibula and also had a procedure on his ankle, resulting in him behind slightly behind schedule as he begins his offseason training program. The 28-year-old said he's still aiming to be ready to go for spring training, and the fact that he's already running three months before position players report to camp is a positive sign. Garrett served primarily as a short-side platoon option at left field and designated hitter in 2023, batting .269 with nine home runs, three stolen bases, 40 RBI and 40 runs over 89 games.
NOVEMBER 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Laid up for six weeks Garrett will not put weight on his injured lower leg for six weeks, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact In addition to undergoing surgery on the fractured fibula Garrett sustained last Wednesday, he also -- per the report -- had "some work done" on his ankle, and he will be laid up for six weeks. Garrett will miss the remainder of the season, but he should be ready to go for spring training in 2024.
AUGUST 28, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Moves to 60-day IL The Nationals transferred Garrett (lower leg) to the 60-day injured list Saturday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Garrett had to be carted off the field Wednesday after fracturing his fibula while attempting to make a catch at the wall. His move to the 60-day IL will officially put an end to Garrett's season, and Jacob Young will come up from Triple-A Rochester to fill the open 40-man roster spot. Garrett finishes 2023 with a .269/.343/.457 slash line alongside nine home runs and 40 RBI across 268 plate appearances.
AUGUST 26, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Diagnosed with fractured fibula Garrett was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a fractured left fibula, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Garrett had to be carted off the field after getting his leg caught in the outfield wall at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday and subsequent testing has revealed a fracture. A timetable for his return hasn't been provided, but Garrett certainly isn't going to make it back before the end of the season. With Garrett out, the Nationals could go back to using Lane Thomas regularly at a corner outfield spot and putting Alex Call in center.
AUGUST 24, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Carted off with leg injury Garrett was removed from Wednesday's game against the Yankees with an apparent left leg injury, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Garrett appeared to have his left leg get caught in the outfield wall as he attempted to rob DJ LeMahieu of a home run during the seventh inning. Garrett then collapsed to the ground and looked to be in a significant amount of pain before exiting on a cart. The Nationals will take a look at him and should provide more details shortly, but early signs aren't promising for the 27-year-old.
AUGUST 24, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Three hits in Friday's win Garrett went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored in Friday's 8-7 win over the Phillies.
Impact The outfielder is suddenly one of the hottest hitters in the majors, producing five multi-hit performances over the last seven games while batting .520 (13-for-25) with five doubles, two homers, seven runs and 11 RBI. Garrett's surge has pushed him into a starting role, and the Nationals have little reason not to give the 27-year-old a long look over the remainder of the season.
AUGUST 19, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Goes yard twice in win Garrett went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Red Sox.
Impact The 27-year-old ripped a James Paxton cutter over the fence in left-center field in the fourth inning before capping the scoring in the eighth by crushing a Garrett Whitlock sinker 442 feet to center field. Garrett the outfielder appears to be pushing his way into an everyday role by going 8-for-17 (.471) over the last five games with two doubles, two homers, four runs and eight RBI, pushing his slash line on the season to .266/.346/.458.
AUGUST 17, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Starting again amid hot run Garrett will start in left field and bat fifth in Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Garrett will pick up a fifth consecutive start Wednesday after going 6-for-13 with two doubles, three walks, six RBI and two runs. Despite Garrett's hot run at the plate of late, it's unclear if the Nationals are eager to hand him regular starts against right-handed pitching. Two of his starts during this current five-game stretch came against lefties, and Lane Thomas missed one of the other three contests due to a wrist injury.
AUGUST 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Sitting Friday Garrett isn't in the Nationals' lineup Friday against the Reds, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Garrett is in the middle of an 0-for-10 stretch at the plate over his last seven games and will take a seat Friday to regroup. Blake Rutherford will start in left field and make his MLB debut batting sixth while Garrett sits.
AUGUST 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Belts seventh homer Garrett went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Rockies.
Impact The 27-year-old took Brad Hand deep in the seventh inning for his seventh homer of the season. Garrett continues to thrive on the short side of a platoon in left field with Corey Dickerson, slashing .278/.345/.536 in 110 plate appearances this season against left-handed pitching.
JULY 26, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Three hits against Cubs Garrett went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored in Monday's win over the Cubs.
Impact Getting the start in left field and batting sixth with southpaw Drew Smyly on the mound for Chicago, Garrett took advantage of the matchup and smoked doubles off the veteran hurler in the fourth and sixth innings, coming around to score each time. The 27-year-old outfielder is stuck on the short side of a platoon with Corey Dickerson, but he has some DFS utility in that role given his .810 OPS against left-handers this season with five homers and 22 RBI in 101 plate appearances.
JULY 18, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Swats sixth homer Garrett entered Sunday's win over the Rangers as a defensive replacement for Corey Dickerson in the top of the seventh inning and went 1-for-1 with a solo home run.
Impact Garrett took Josh Sborz deep in the bottom of the seventh, giving the 27-year-old outfielder his third homer in the last nine games and sixth of the season. His role on the short side of a left-field platoon with Dickerson limits his fantasy utility, but the veteran will become a free agent in the offseason and could get flipped at the trade deadline, opening up more playing time for Garrett in the second half.
JULY 10, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Back on bench versus righty Garrett is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact With the Nationals facing off against left-handed starting pitchers in each of the last three contests, Garrett entered the lineup in left field each time but went a combined 0-for-10 with one walk against six strikeouts. The righty-hitting outfielder will move back to the bench Sunday in favor of Corey Dickerson while right-hander Dane Dunning takes the bump for Texas.
JULY 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Cranks grand slam in win Garrett went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in Sunday's 5-4 victory over Philadelphia.
Impact Garrett put the Nats ahead 4-3 in the third inning with a two-out grand slam off Ranger Suarez, his fifth homer of the year and his second in his last three games. The 27-year-old Garrett is now 5-for-9 in his last three games after going just 4-for-19 (.211) over his previous 11 contests. He's slashing a solid .275/.340/.437 with 23 RBI and 22 runs scored through 160 plate appearances this season. However, Garrett can't be counted on for fantasy purposes while occupying the short side of a platoon in Washington.
JULY 2, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Provides spark in win Garrett went 2-for-4 with one double and a two-run home run in Friday's 2-1 win over the Phillies.
Impact Garrett drew his first start since June 22 and didn't disappoint, as his two-run homer account for all of Washington's runs during the low-scoring win. The 27-year-old outfielder is slashing .263/.331/.409 with four home runs and 19 RBI across 51 appearances (154 plate appearances), but he's not seeing enough playing time to be a quality fantasy option at the moment.
