Moving to bullpen
Matz will pitch out of the bullpen going forward, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
Matz has given up 11 earned runs in just 4.2 combined innings between his last two starts, so the Rays will pull him out of the rotation and move him to the bullpen until he rights the ship. The team hasn't yet announced who will claim the open spot in the rotation, though Joe Boyle figures to be a likely candidate since he's already started three games for the Rays this season and owns a spot on the 40-man roster.

Mauled by Tigers
Matz (4-3) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up five runs on six hits over 1.2 innings as the Rays were routed 8-0 by the Tigers. He struck out two without walking a batter.
Impact
Gleyber Torres led off the game with a solo shot before Wenceel Perez added a two-run blast in the second, helping to chase Matz from the game after only 53 pitches (35 strikes). The southpaw's been tagged for 11 runs in his last two outings, ballooning his ERA from 3.70 to 5.48, and he hasn't won a game since late April. With Jesse Scholtens (wrist) on the IL and Joe Boyle still struggling to find his form at Triple-A Durham, however, Tampa Bay may have to stick with Matz in the rotation a little while longer. He lines up to make his next start at home early next week against the Red Sox.

Tagged for six runs during loss
Matz (4-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Orioles, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two over three innings.
Impact
Things unraveled quickly for Matz in the opening inning. After issuing a leadoff walk, the left-hander surrendered a two-run homer to Gunnar Henderson before allowing five of the next six batters to reach base, leading to a five-run frame. Matz managed to complete just two more innings afterward, and the six runs allowed marked a season high. After he had held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in six of his previous eight starts, the southpaw now owns a 4.67 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 35:17 K:BB across 44.1 innings. Matz is scheduled to face Detroit next.

Works in tandem in return
Matz didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over four innings in the Rays' 5-3 victory over the Orioles. He struck out five.
Impact
Making his first start since May 3 after recovering from a bout of elbow inflammation, Matz was lifted after 67 pitches (41 strikes) and wound up working in a tandem arrangement with Jesse Scholtens, who got the win while tossing four innings of relief. Matz wasn't expected to have any significant workload restrictions, so it's not clear if he'll continue to piggyback with Scholtens, or if Tampa Bay will shift to a six-man rotation. Regardless of his role or when his next outing will happen, Matz's 3.70 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB through 41.1 innings on the season will give him some fantasy appeal in deeper formats.

Activated ahead of start Wednesday
The Rays reinstated Matz (elbow) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Orioles, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports.
Impact
After Tampa Bay deactivated him May 5 due to left elbow inflammation, Matz ended up spending the minimum amount of time on the shelf. Following his placement on the IL, Matz took just a few days off from throwing before getting back on the mound, so he shouldn't be operating with any major restrictions as he slots back into the Tampa Bay rotation. Prior to being shelved, Matz went 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 28:13 K:BB in 37.1 innings through his first seven starts of the season.

Cleared to return Wednesday
Matz (elbow) will rejoin the Rays' rotation Wednesday with a start against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
Matz came out of a bullpen session Sunday with no concerns, clearing the path for his return. The veteran southpaw did not make any rehab starts, so he will likely be somewhat limited from a workload perspective versus Baltimore. Matz posted a 3.86 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 28:13 K:BB over 37.1 innings covering his first seven starts for the Rays before going down with left elbow inflammation.

Absence expected to be brief
Matz's (elbow) stint on the 15-day injured list is not expected to last long, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports.
Impact
Matz was placed on the IL earlier Tuesday with left elbow inflammation. He felt soreness in the elbow after his last outing, but an MRI came back negative and the belief is the injury was caught early. It's unclear when Matz might be ready to throw again, but he could be ready to rejoin the Rays' rotation later this month if all goes well.
