Former Clemson Pitcher Spencer Strider to Make First Career Start for Braves

Set for first career MLB start
Strider is listed as Atlanta's scheduled starting pitcher for Monday's game in Arizona, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Impact
The rookie right-hander has been a standout in the Atlanta bullpen this season with a 2.22 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB across 24.1 innings, but he'll finally get a look in the rotation as the team attempts to put an end to its revolving door at the No. 5 starter spot. With Tucker Davidson being banished to Triple-A Gwinnett after issuing four walks in both of his past two starts, Strider will get the chance to bring stability at the back end of the Atlanta rotation. Since he hasn't covered more than four innings or 71 pitches in any of his extended relief outings this season, Strider might not be stretched out enough to handle a traditional starting role Monday, but he should be capable of offering fantasy managers strong ratios even if he faces a restricted workload. The 23-year-old looks like a strong speculative pickup in shallower leagues where he's still available.

Notches first career hold
Strider struck out the side in a perfect seventh inning Wednesday to record his first hold of the season in an extra-innings loss to the Brewers.
Impact
The rookie looked very comfortable in his new setup role, but the rest of the Atlanta bullpen wasn't able to get the job done. Strider has a dominant 40.0 percent strikeout rate through 20.2 innings this season with a 2.61 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, and while he's no threat to Kenley Jansen in the closer spot, he should be able to collect holds quickly with more high-leverage usage.

Moving into higher-leverage role
Atlanta manager Brian Snitker suggested after Monday's 1-0 loss at Milwaukee that Strider will likely handle more higher-leverage work late in games in the wake of Tyler Matzek's (...
Impact
When Atlanta optioned Bryce Elder and Kyle Muller to Triple-A Gwinnett on May 1, Strider looked like a potential candidate to step into the final opening in the rotation, but the big club will instead promote Tucker Davidson from Gwinnett to give him another look as the No. 5 starter beginning with Tuesday's game against the Brewers. After working a career-high four innings in a bulk-relief role May 6, Strider would have been reasonably stretched out enough for starting duty, but Atlanta apparently believes he'll provide more value out of the bullpen as a high-leverage, multi-inning arm late in games. Look for Atlanta to stay away from Strider on Tuesday, however, as he tossed two scoreless innings in a 26-pitch relief appearance Monday.

Brilliant in bulk relief outing
Strider gave up four hits and struck out eight over four scoreless innings of relief but didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Brewers.
Impact
Entering the game after opener Jesse Chavez had coughed up two runs in the first inning, Strider shut down the Milwaukee offense and gave Atlanta a chance to tie the game up. Unfortunately, as soon as the rookie right-hander exited after firing 69 pitches (50 strikes), the Brewers' bats got rolling again. Strider battled some control issues in April, walking multiple batters in three straight appearances, but he appears to be tightening things up and has 13 strikeouts against only one walk over his last two outings and 7.2 innings. Atlanta has struggled to find a consistent fifth starter so far this season, but Strider could soon get a look in the rotation given his recent improvements. On the season, he sports a 2.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB through 16.2 innings.

Another scoreless outing
Strider didn't give up a hit or a run over 3.2 innings of relief in Sunday's loss to the Padres, walking three and striking out three.
Impact
The flamethrowing rookie continues to pile up whiffs and now boasts a 32.4 percent strikeout rate through his first nine big-league innings, but Strider's 17.6 percent walk rate seems likely to keep him from working his way out of a long relief role any time soon. His upside is sky high, whether as a future closer or with a move into the rotation, but for now the 23-year-old has more value as a dynasty asset than in redraft fantasy formats.

Dazzles in relief Thursday
Strider struck out five over two perfect innings of relief in Thursday's loss to the Reds.
Impact
Entering the game with Atlanta down 6-1 in the top of the seventh inning, Strider sliced through the heart of Cincinnati's lineup. The rookie right-hander needed only 24 pitches (16 strikes) to breeze through his outing, hitting triple digits with his fastball twice and consistently sitting at 99 mph with his heater. Strider figures to handle a multi-inning role in a stacked Atlanta bullpen to begin the season, but his ability to pile up strikeouts while collecting the occasional win or hold should still give him fantasy value in deeper formats even if he doesn't graduate to a more high-profile gig.

Makes Opening Day roster
Strider is set to make Atlanta's Opening Day roster, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Barring any late roster additions, Strider, Tucker Davidson and William Contreras will be in the majors to open the season. Strider was competing for a rotation spot but will begin the campaign as a bullpen option, though he could also see some work as a sixth starter. The 23-year-old righty made his big-league debut with two appearances last season and spent most of the year at Double-A Mississippi, where he had a 4.71 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 94:29 K:BB over 63 innings.

Flashes heat in Tuesday's game
Strider gave up four hits and struck out three over two scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins and hit 100 mph with four of his pitches, Gabriel Bu...
Impact
In addition to clocking triple digits, 20 of Strider's 29 pitches in the outing reached 96 mph. The 23-year-old right hander made a dramatic ascent through the Atlanta system last season, starting out in Low-A but ending the year in the big-league bullpen, and it's easy to see why after Tuesday's performance. Strider is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Gwinnett, but it's not yet clear whether the organization will stretch him back out as a starter -- he started 14 games for Double-A Mississippi in 2021 and posted a 94:29 K:BB in 63 innings, albeit with a 4.71 ERA and 1.22 WHIP -- or whether he'll continue his development as a potential high-leverage bullpen arm.

Strider was not included on Atlanta's NLDS roster against Milwaukee

Strider debuted and threw 2.1 innings of relief on the final weekend of the regular season, allowing one run on two hits and walking one batter. Despite speculation that he may have a spot in the postseason bullpen, he'll be unavailable for the duration of the NLDS.
