Braves Provide Hopeful Update on Spencer Strider, Hurston Waldrep
It's far from guaranteed, but there is some hope that the Atlanta Braves could get two injured arms back this season

Cleared to start throwing again
Atlanta manager Walt Weiss said Monday that Strider (elbow) will begin a throwing progression this week, Chad Bishop of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Impact
Mark Bowman of MLB.com previously reported Aug. 1 that Strider's locker at Truist Park was recently cleared out, which appeared to signal that Atlanta wasn't counting on the right-hander pitching again in 2026. However, with Strider having now been given the green light to start playing light catch, he now looks to have a chance at making it back on the mound before the end of the season. Strider, who has been on the shelf since June 13 due to right elbow inflammation, can't afford a setback during his throwing progression, as any hiccups would likely close the door on a return from the 60-day injured list. Given the time that he's missed, the 27-year-old will be in store for an extended buildup, and it's not a given that he'll be stretched out enough to handle a traditional starting role if/when he returns. Strider could still provide value to Atlanta as an opener or multi-inning weapon out of the bullpen down the stretch.

Likely done for 2026
Strider (elbow) appears unlikely to pitch again during the 2026 season, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Impact
After landing on the shelf June 13 due to right elbow inflammation, Strider met with Dr. Keith Meister two days later and was prescribed a month of rest. Though he was expected to be re-evaluated over the All-Star break, Atlanta hasn't provided a formal update on Strider's next steps. Bowman notes that Strider had his locker cleaned out during Atlanta's most recent homestand, a sign that the club isn't counting on the right-hander's return over the final two months of the season. Strider labored through his eight starts with Atlanta prior to going on the injured list, walking 12.8 percent of the batters he faced while pitching to a 5.31 ERA and 1.36 WHIP across 39 innings.

Set for follow-up appointment
Strider (elbow) will have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Keith Meister next week, and may also be scheduled for an MRI, Chad Bishop of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Impact
The right-hander was originally shut down June 16 for a period of about four weeks after an initial MRI revealed no structural damage, so if his elbow checks out OK, Strider could begin a throwing program soon afterward. A return to the big-league roster in late August would seem to be the best-case scenario for Strider, but Atlanta manager Walt Weiss didn't sound optimistic when discussing the 2023 All-Star. "He's not close to being back here. Spencer's not even really on the radar right now," Weiss said Friday. Through just 39 innings this season, Strider has a 5.31 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 46:20 K:BB.

Transferred to 60-day IL
Atlanta transferred Strider (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.
Impact
Strider landed on the 15-day IL on June 13 with right elbow inflammation and it was later deemed that he would be shut down for at least four weeks. Although the 27-year-old avoided any structural damage to his elbow, Atlanta made the decision to transfer him to the 60-day IL in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Carlos Carrasco. Strider has only appeared in eight games this season for Atlanta after having the start of his season delayed due to an oblique injury that sidelined him until May 3.
