INJURIES

Will be active Opening Day Steer (shoulder) will be active for the Reds on Opening Day, Charlie Goldsmith of Charlie's Chalkboard reports.
Impact The Reds had said previously that Steer would open the season on the 10-day injured list, but he's shown enough improvement with his right shoulder injury that he'll avoid an IL stint. Steer still isn't able to play the field, so he will be limited to designated hitter duty initially.

Participates in exhibition Steer (shoulder) was included in the lineup as a designated hitter for High-A Dayton's exhibition game against the Reds on Tuesday.
Impact The Dragons operated with a 10-player batting order to accommodate Steer, who missed most of the Cactus League season due to shoulder discomfort. He's expected to open the season on the injured list. Without Steer, the Reds will get by with a mix of Jeimer Candelario, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Gavin Lux at DH and the corner infield positions.

Opening season on IL The Reds will place Steer (shoulder) on the injured list to start the regular season, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Steer played in a minor-league game Thursday -- his first competitive action of any kind since February -- but it appears he won't have enough time to prepare for Opening Day. He'll most likely head to one of Cincinnati's minor-league affiliates on a rehab assignment to pick up at-bats before rejoining the Reds.

Gets at-bats in minor league game Steer (shoulder) made three plate appearances in a minor-league game Thursday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact Steer, who tested the shoulder earlier this week by throwing, took another step in his recovery Thursday, participating in his first game action of any kind since Feb 27. He believes he'd be ready to start the regular season as a designated hitter but would be unable to play a position. Steer followed up Thursday's activity by taking more swings against reliever Scott Barlow. While he may be able to swing a bat in time for the regular season, Steer has about 20 spring at-bats, only seven of which have been in Cactus League play.

MARCH 21, 2025 • MLB.COM
Starting throwing program Tuesday Steer (shoulder) will begin a throwing program Tuesday, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Steer played through a right shoulder strain late last season and the injury has lingered this spring, limiting him to only seven plate appearances at designated hitter. While his readiness for Opening Day seems unlikely, the Reds are not ready to rule him out yet. Wittenmyer notes that a cortisone injection has knocked out the inflammation in Steer's shoulder and the focus lately has been correcting bad habits created by compensating for the injury. The Reds likely would want Steer available to play the field in order to avoid the IL, and it's uncertain when he might be cleared for that.
MARCH 17, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Takes swings in cage Steer (shoulder) took swings in a batting cage Wednesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact This was the first time Steer had a bat in his hand since getting a cortisone shoe in his right shoulder March 1. He took flips in the cage before heading to the weight room. The next step is to see how the 27-year-old infielder/outfielder responds to the activity. Steer believes he can still get ready for the regular season, but in the words of manager Terry Francona, "We want his shoulder to tell us that - not Opening Day."

Undergoes exam Steer (shoulder) received positive results after being re-examined by the team's medical staff Saturday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact Steer was examined for the first time since receiving a cortisone injection in his right shoulder. Cincinnati manager Terry Francona said Sunday that he'll work on range-of-motion activities and estimated Steer should progress to hitting off a tee by mid-week.

May open season on IL Manager Terry Francona said Saturday that Steer (shoulder) could begin the season on the injured list, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Steer was scratched from the lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Padres due to his injured shoulder, and he elected to receive a cortisone shot after an examination, per Wittenmyer. This will force the 27-year-old to pause all activities for the next few days, and there's no telling at this point how long it will be before he's cleared to play in games.

Throwing program on hold Steer (shoulder) still feels discomfort and had a scheduled throwing program put on hold, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "He's just not quite where we want him to be," manager Te...
Impact Steer is still able to DH -- he went 1-for-2 in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks -- because it doesn't hurt him to swing a bat. Multiple MRIs have confirmed no structural damage, but as Steer indicated, "shoulders are tricky." He's scheduled to be examined this weekend by the team's orthopedist before any decisions or timelines to be established.

Scheduled to throw Steer (shoulder) is scheduled to begin throwing Monday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact Steer is delayed in playing the field due to a sore right shoulder. He is able to DH and did so for one Cactus League game thus far.
FEBRUARY 24, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Will DH initially Steer (shoulder) will serve as a designated hitter in one of Saturday's split-games, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact Steer is nursing a shoulder injury but is expected to being throwing soon, per manager Terry Francona. He might also play first base with the caveat that he's not to throw until he's ready. Steer, who made 100 starts in the outfield (98 in left field) last season and is expected to be in the mix in 2025, will need to go through a progression before playing there.
FEBRUARY 22, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Will begin throwing soon Reds manager Terry Francona said Thursday that Steer (shoulder) will start throwing "fairly soon," Charlie Goldsmith of Charlie's Chalkboard reports.
Impact Steer has been slow-played early on in camp due to right shoulder soreness, which is an issue that dates back to the end of last season. He is expected to be limited to designated hitter duty at the beginning of the spring training schedule and it's not clear when he might be ready to play the field. At this point, Steer's Opening Day readiness does not seem to be in doubt.
FEBRUARY 20, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Nursing sore shoulder Steer could be limited to designated hitter duty at the beginning of the spring training schedule due to shoulder soreness, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Steer battled some shoulder soreness late last season and apparently still isn't quite over the issue. It does not seem to be something to get overly worried about at this juncture, but that could change if the soreness continues to linger. It's not clear when exactly Steer's shoulder began bothering him last season, but he slashed only .165/.268/.294 in September.
FEBRUARY 11, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Sitting Saturday Steer isn't in Cincinnati's lineup for Saturday's game against Pittsburgh.
Impact Steer will get a day to rest Saturday after slashing .190/.301/.365 with six RBI across 73 plate appearances since the start of September. His absence will allow Will Benson to pick up a start in left field and bat ninth.

Reaches 20-homer mark Steer went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Tuesday's 6-5 win over Atlanta.
Impact Steer's two-run shot in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winning knock for Cincinnati, which came back from a 5-1 deficit. The home run was Steer's 20th, the second consecutive year he's crossed that threshold, and gave him his first 20-20 season.
SEPTEMBER 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Sets new high for RBI Steer went 1-for-4 with a walk, a double, two RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 11-1 win over the Twins.
Impact All of Steer's activity occurred during the Reds' nine-run fourth inning. He led off the frame with a walk and scored the first run, then doubled in a pair before trotting home on TJ Friedl's home run. The two runs driven in established a new career high of 88 RBI and were the first in 10 games for Steer, who entered the contest with just three RBI over the previous 17 games. Despite the lack of run production, Steer remains Cincinnati's leader in the category.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Reaches 25-steal mark Steer went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact Steer has gone just 6-for-35 (.171) over 10 games in September, but he's managed to rack up three steals this month. He's now at 25 thefts on the year, reaching that mark in 28 attempts. The 26-year-old has added a .231/.325/.406 slash line with 19 home runs, 30 doubles, two triples, 86 RBI and 68 runs scored through 144 contests.
SEPTEMBER 12, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Swipes 24th bag Steer went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 6-4 extra-inning loss to the Mets.
Impact Steer led off the seventh inning with a walk, then stole second base before trotting home on TJ Friedl's game-tying home run. It was the 24th stolen base of the season for Steer, who never showed this level of thievery in the minors. The 26-year-old infielder/outfielder has hit safely in 16 of the last 19 contests, going 17-for-69 (.246) with four extra-base hits, 11 walks, 11 RBI and five runs scored during that stretch.
