New Pirates 1B Spencer Horwitz to miss at least 6-8 weeks following wrist surgery

New Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz is expected to miss most of spring training after undergoing surgery on his right wrist

On mend from thumb surgery Horwitz said Wednesday that the surgery he underwent last week was to repair the extensor tendon in his right thumb, John Perrotto of PittsburghBaseballNow.com reports.
Impact Prior reports Tuesday suggested that Horwitz had surgery on his right wrist, but the procedure was actually performed lower on his hand. In any case, Horwitz is without a clear timeline to resume baseball activities, casting doubt on his availability for the start of the season. Horwitz had been positioned to open the campaign as the Pirates' primary first baseman, but if he requires a stint on the injured list, Pittsburgh could turn to Jared Triolo, Billy Cook or Bryan Reynolds to pick up starts at the position early on.

Battling wrist injury Horwitz will miss time during spring training due to a right wrist injury, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact Horwitz was traded from Toronto to Cleveland and later Pittsburgh back in December and was expected to begin 2025 as the Pirates' primary first baseman. The severity of his injury is unknown, so there's no telling if the infielder's absence will extend into the regular season. If he ends up beginning the year on the injured list, Jared Triolo would likely be the next man up to start at first.

Impact Just hours after being traded to Cleveland in the deal that sent Andres Gimenez to Toronto, Horwitz will now land in Pittsburgh instead while the Guardains add to their organizational depth. The 27-year-old has covered first and second base during his time in the big leagues and should have no problem starting regularly in a Pirates infield that lacks impact bats.

Impact Horwitz didn't get the start Sunday with lefty Chris Sale on the mound for the home side, but he pinch hit for Leo Jimenez in the eighth inning and launched a go-ahead homer off Joe Jimenez, only for Atlanta to tie it up in the bottom of the ninth and walk it off in the 11th.
