Lands on injured list Akiyama was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right hamstring strain.
Impact Akiyama was unavailable for Friday night's game due to the injury, and he'll now be sidelined until at least late September. Both Tyler Naquin (ribs) and Jesse Winker (ribs) are also sidelined, so Akiyama would have been in line for significant playing time. In his absence, the Reds will be shorthanded in the outfield. Max Schrock and Delino DeShields figure to see a boost in playing time as a result.

Dealing with hamstring Akiyama was unavailable for Friday's game against the Dodgers due to a sore hamstring, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Akiyama's absence hurt the Reds in center field Friday night, with Tyler Naquin going on the IL and Jesse Winker leaving the game late. The remaining options in center field are Delino DeShields and Aristides Aquino, with Max Schrock useable there in a pinch.

Slips down depth chart Akiyama remains out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs.
Impact Akiyama appears to have fallen behind all of Tyler Naquin, Nick Castellanos, Max Schrock, Delino DeShields and Aristides Aquino in the pecking order in the Cincinnati outfield. Since Akiyama made his last start Aug. 24, all of the aforementioned five players have made no fewer than four outfield starts.

Hendricks keeps Reds in check as Cubs end 12-game skid, 2-1

Kyle Hendricks became the first 14-game winner in the majors, Ian Happ homered and the Chicago Cubs snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds

Filling in for Winker Akiyama will start in center field and bat eighth Tuesday against the Cubs.
Impact After Jesse Winker (intercostal) was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday, Akiyama and Aristides Aquino should be in store for extra opportunities in the Cincinnati outfield. The lefty-hitting Akiyama should play alongside Tyler Naquin and Nick Castellanos versus right-handed pitching, while the righty-hitting Aquino likely replaces Akiyama or Naquin versus southpaws.

India homers as Reds beat Phillies 7-4

Jonathan India homered and scored three times, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4
AUGUST 15, 2021 • Associated Press
Rewarded with another start Akiyama will start in center field and bat eighth Sunday against the Pirates.
Impact Manager David Bell will roll with Akiyama over Tyler Naquin in center field for the second game in a row after the former went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in Saturday's 11-3 win. Naquin still appears to be viewed as the Reds' primary option on the position, but his second-half cool down coupled with Akiyama's status as the superior defensive option could make center field more of a timeshare over the final two months of the season than it had been previously.

Castillo solid for 6, Stephenson homers as Reds edge Twins

Luis Castillo pitched six effective innings, Tyler Stephenson homered to give the Reds a cushion they ended up needing, and Cincinnati held on to beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5

Back to bench Akiyama is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets.
Impact Akiyama will retreat to the bench after going 4-for-16 with a pair of doubles and two RBI while starting in four of the past five games. The Reds appear content to roll out a timeshare of Akiyama and Aristides Aquino -- who will start Sunday -- in the remaining spot in their outfield alongside everyday players Jesse Winker and Tyler Naquin. Both Akiyama and Aquino will see their opportunities dry up whenever Nick Castellanos (wrist) returns from the injured list.

Votto extends power surge, Reds roll past Cubs 8-2

Joey Votto homered twice for the second consecutive day, going deep in his fifth straight game to match a Cincinnati record as the Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2

Behind Aquino in outfield picture Akiyama is on the bench for Monday's game against the Cubs.
Impact After a recent stretch in which he picked up three consecutive starts, Akiyama will now remain on the bench for the fifth time in six games. The hot-hitting Aristides Aquino appears to have emerged as manager David Bell's preferred choice to fill a spot in the Reds' everyday outfield alongside Jesse Winker and Tyler Naquin while Nick Castellanos (wrist) is on the injured list.
JULY 26, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Nabs third straight start Akiyama will start in center field and bat seventh Monday against the Mets.
Impact Akiyama will stick in the lineup for the third straight game, but each of those starts have coincided with Nick Castellanos (wrist) sitting out. The Reds are viewing Castellanos as day-to-day, so if he's able to avoid the injured list, Akiyama will soon move back into a fourth-outfielder role for Cincinnati.

Drives in only run Tuesday Akiyama went 1-for-2 with an RBI single in a loss to the Brewers on Tuesday.
Impact The 33-year-old's second-inning single brought home Tucker Barnhart with the first run of the game for either squad. Akiyama is 3-for-6 over his last two games to get his average back over the Mendoza Line to .217, but his .533 OPS through 51 plate appearances underscores how much he continues to struggle through a season-plus against big-league arms after a successful career in Japan.
