Impact Manager Scott Servais noted Friday that Long is "starting to pick it up now" after being forced into some down time yet again. Long will not be available for the start of the regular season and Servais added the second baseman likely needs to "spend some time with the guys down here in Arizona", referring to the team's alternate training site, in order to get up to playing speed before taking the next step toward an eventual regular-season debut.

Such a development would keep Long within close proximity of the big-league training staff, and it would facilitate having Long head down to minor-league spring training at some point during April to get at-bats.

Last year's downturn, combined with Dylan Moore's strong showing, has set up a job battle at the keystone between the two players, with manager Scott Servais noting earlier this offseason Moore had "earned the right to get more regular time at second base." Long is still expected to get a long look this spring, but it will also likely come with some form of rep management in light of last September's injury.
