Struggles with location Dunn started Thursday's Cactus League win over the Giants and allowed three earned runs on a hit, three walks and a wild pitch over 2.2 innings. He struck out three.
Impact Locked in a heated battle with Nick Margevicius for the sixth and final spot in the Mariners' starting rotation, Dunn may have damaged his case some with his control issues Thursday. The location problems sprung up suddenly for Dunn, who Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports retired the first seven batters while ringing up strikeouts of Tommy La Stella and Evan Longoria before unraveling. "I'm taking the learning lesson," Dunn said. "I'd rather have it happen now. [I need] to be able to speed that up and not have three walks and be able to get the next hitter right after the first one."

Cruises in relief outing Margevicius recorded six strikeouts across four scoreless innings in a Cactus League win over the Giants on Thursday, allowing four hits and no walks.
Impact Margevicus was not only credited with the win, but more important, he also seemingly gained a leg up in his competition with Justin Dunn for the final spot in the Mariners' six-man starting rotation. The southpaw lowered his spring ERA to 2.00 with his impressive showing, while Dunn, who started the game, was markedly less sharp while yielding three runs on a hit, three walks and a wild pitch over 2.2 innings.

Signs with Giants Pfeifer signed a minor-league contract with the Giants as a non-roster invitee Friday, Amy Gutierrez of the Giants' official site reports.
Impact Pfeifer was outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett at the end of February but will now join the Giants as a non-roster invitee for the final few weeks of spring training. The southpaw could compete for a major-league bullpen spot but appears likely to begin the year in the minors.

Done with Cactus League Gilbert won't pitch in any more Cactus League games this spring as the Mariners seek to manage his innings, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact It's possible Gilbert is already one of the Mariners' top six starters, as he posted a 2.13 ERA and a 31.7 percent strikeout rate in 26 starts across three levels of the minors in 2019, topping out at Double-A. He could make his big-league debut fairly early in the season, but the Mariners have no interest in giving him credit for a year of service time, so that won't happen until late April at the earliest.

Battling sore ankle Bishop has been slowed by ankle soreness, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact As long as the issue remains nothing worse than soreness, it shouldn't significantly hold back Bishop's preparation for Opening Day. He won't be spending that day on the major-league roster, however, as he's played just 32 career professional games and has yet to reach full-season ball.

Working toward game action Belt (heel) will run the bases Sunday and could get into game action by the end of next week, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Belt underwent surgery to remove a bone spur from his right heel in October and then saw his recovery delayed first by COVID-19 in January and then by mononucleosis in February. He hasn't been officially ruled out for Opening Day, but the projected timeline would have him getting into game action with potentially less than a week until the regular season begins. A short stay on the injured list wouldn't be a surprise and could open up starts for Wilmer Flores, Darin Ruf or Austin Slater.

Could be cleared for defense soon Longoria (foot) could take the field by the middle of next week, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Longoria has been dealing with plantar fasciitis since the start of camp. He's been able to participate in spring training games but has been limited to designated hitter duty. If he does wind up being ready to field his position soon, he should still have enough time to be ready to go by Opening Day, but time is getting tight.
