Rays try to sweep series against the Rockies

Back to Triple-A after spot start The Rockies optioned Sullivan to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday.

Impact Colorado summoned Sullivan from Triple-A on Saturday to make a spot start in place of Tomoyuki Sugano, who was unable to recover from his back spasms as quickly as anticipated and was placed on the injured list. Sullivan dropped to 0-3 in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Giants, serving up six earned runs on 12 hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He'll now head back to Triple-A and give up his spot on the active roster to right-hander TJ Shook, who was recalled from Albuquerque to provide the Rockies with extra coverage in the bullpen heading into Sunday's series finale.

Impact Sullivan was brought up from Triple-A on Saturday to make the start after Tomoyuki Sugano landed on the IL due to back spasms. Sullivan had posted an 8.64 ERA across four starts prior to being recalled, and that number got even worse after Saturday's outing. The left-hander was knocked around for a career-worst 12 hits, eight of which (seven doubles and a home run) went for extra bases. Sullivan has given up five or more runs in over half of his starts so far and has yet to notch an MLB victory. Still, he could make at least one more start in place of Sugano given Colorado's lack of other rotation options.

Impact Sullivan was optioned to Albuquerque on Tuesday, but he's right back up with the big-league club to make a start in place of Tomoyuki Sugano, who was placed on the 15-day IL due to back spasms in a corresponding move. Sullivan has struggled during his time with the big-league club this season, recording an 8.64 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 12:9 K:BB over 16.2 innings spanning four starts. However, Colorado doesn't have many other rotation options to turn to, so Sullivan could remain in a starting role beyond Saturday while Sugano recovers.

Impact Sullivan was able to complete five frames for the first time as a big-leaguer, but that's where the positives end. The southpaw put himself in constant danger by handing out five free passes, with two of the batters he walked eventually coming around to score. Sullivan was at least better than in his previous start, when he was rocked by the Cubs for eight runs over four innings, but his performances so far have given fantasy managers no reason to consider adding him to their rosters.

The southpaw threw three scoreless innings against the Athletics last week before his major-league debut was cut short by an illness. Sullivan pitched to a 5.76 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 50:10 K:BB over 54.2 innings with Triple-A Albuquerque prior to his call-up, and given his tough home park, he's a risky option at best in fantasy. Despite being tasked with making his MLB debut in an extreme hitter-friendly venue in Las Vegas, Sullivan was able to keep the Athletics off the board for three innings while striking out three batters and allowing just three baserunners. The 23-year-old lefty ended up having his start cut short after falling ill, but he's since recovered from the ailment and performed well enough during his time on the mound to earn himself another turn through the rotation. Even though he excelled in his debut and will be pitching in a more favorable environment for his second start, Sullivan will still be difficult to trust for fantasy purposes after he posted underwhelming numbers over a larger sample at Triple-A (5.76 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 50:19 K:BB in 54.2 innings).
