Both the New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals are looking for a series win with a victory on Thursday

Let down by defense in loss Manaea (1-4) took the loss Saturday against Atlanta, allowing six runs on six hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out four.

Impact Manaea might have been able to push for a quality start Saturday if not for a key third-inning dropped ball by Tyrone Taylor in the outfield, which allowed Atlanta to score three runs. The 34-year-old southpaw tossed 38 pitches in the frame en route to reaching a season-high 108 on the evening, but the six runs given up were still a season worst. Manaea is set to take a 5.16 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 68:23 K:BB over 68 innings into a fairly soft home matchup against the Royals his next time out.

Impact Manaea came one out short of logging what could have been his second quality start of the season, as he's fared a bit better out of the rotation recently as opposed to the bullpen. The 34-year-old left-hander has a 5.02 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 44 innings as a reliever, but he improved his ERA to 4.05 and his WHIP to 1.20 to go with a 19:5 K:BB across 20 frames as a starter. Manaea is set to wrap up a two-start week over the weekend in Atlanta.

Impact Manaea wasn't helped by the defense behind him, as the Mets committed two infield errors while he was on the mound. He allowed back-to-back doubles to open the second inning, bringing in his first run, before five straight Cubs reached base in the fourth -- one via an error -- forcing his early exit. Despite the short outing, Manaea did generate 10 swinging strikes. He has now posted a 3.86 ERA and 22:5 KBB in five outings as a starter or bulk reliever. The 34-year-old is set for a home outing against Toronto next time out.

Impact Manaea was deployed in a traditional starting role for the first time this season after working behind an opener his last two times out and as a long reliever prior to that. The southpaw gave up one run in each of the second and fourth frames, but that was the extent of the damage Atlanta managed against him. Manaea was tagged with the loss, however, since New York managed just one run of offense against five Atlanta hurlers. Still, this was a promising outing for Manaea, who completed six frames for the first time since the 2024 campaign. Given this performance, it seems likely he'll continue to be rolled out as a starter, though he's lined up for a tough matchup on the road against the Phillies his next time out.

The southpaw logged 66 pitches (39 strikes) in what was his second appearance since joining the New York rotation after operating exclusively as a reliever to open the season.
