Goes on IL with neck strain
The Tigers placed Gipson-Long on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a neck strain.
Impact
Gipson-Long last pitched June 27, and it's not clear whether he got hurt during that outing or sometime since then. The right-hander will be eligible for activation at the start of the second half, but the Tigers have not revealed a timetable for his return. With Reese Olson (finger) expected back soon, Gipson-Long might not have a rotation spot waiting for him once he's healthy.

Struggles with hard contact in loss
Gipson-Long (0-1) took the loss Friday against the Twins, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out five.
Impact
Gipson-Long worked as a traditional starter for the second time in five outings this year, throwing a season-high 77 pitches. The 27-year-old swingman tied a season high with five strikeouts, but three of his four hits allowed went for extra bases. Gipson-Long has had trouble with hard contact at times, as evidenced by his 4.70 ERA through 23 frames, but he does own a more palatable 1.09 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB. His next appearance lines as a road matchup against the reeling Nationals, who entered Friday with a .615 OPS versus right-handed pitching since the start of June.

Sets new season high in innings
Gipson-Long worked in bulk relief during Saturday's 8-3 loss to the Rays, allowing four runs on six hits across 6.1 innings. He struck out three.
Impact
After opener Brant Hurter failed to complete the first inning, Gipson-Long came in to retire the last batter of the frame and then worked the next six full innings. It's a new season high in innings for the righty, who has now made four appearances since getting activated off the injured list earlier this month. Gipson-Long did allow his first three home runs of the year Saturday, though it was otherwise an encouraging outing for the 27-year-old as he continues to round into form following his long layoff after Tommy John and hip surgeries. He'll carry a 4.58 ERA into his next appearance, which is currently scheduled for Friday at home against the Twins.

Working in bulk relief Saturday
Gipson-Long is slated to work in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Brant Hurter in Saturday's game against the Rays, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact
Gipson-Long remains part of the Detroit rotation but will be working out of the bullpen for his third straight appearance. After giving up three earned runs over 3.2 innings against the White Sox on June 4 in his lone start for the Tigers following his return from the 60-day injured list, Gipson-Long has posted a 2.35 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 7:1 K:BB in 7.2 innings over his last two outings.

Following opener Sunday
Gipson-Long is expected to work in relief behind opening pitcher Tyler Holton against the Reds on Sunday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact
Gipson-Long worked behind an opener in his previous outing Tuesday and gave up one run across 4.2 frames in a no-decision against the Orioles. The right-hander has a 4.32 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 8:1 K:BB through his first two appearances of 2025 after being sidelined for the first two months of the season while recovering from elbow and hip surgeries.

Looks sharp Tuesday
Gipson-Long allowed one run on three hits across 4.2 innings of relief in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Orioles. He struck out five.
Impact
Gipson-Long was the third Detroit pitcher of the night and ended up filling the bulk role as he set a new season best in innings and earned his first hold of the year. After covering 3.2 innings and tossing 70 pitches in his 2025 debut Wednesday, the righty dipped to 51 pitches but was more efficient and looked sharper in his second appearance. Before last week, Gipson-Long hadn't appeared in an MLB game since 2023 following a lengthy recovery from Tommy John surgery and hip surgery. The 27-year-old is a near-term starting option with Jackson Jobe (elbow) and Reese Olson (finger) on the injured list, but Gibson-Long may settle in as a long reliever when the Tigers are fully healthy. For now, he's penciled in to take the mound again Sunday against the Reds, potentially in a bulk role once more with Brant Hurter as the opener.

Following opener Tuesday
Gipson-Long will pitch in bulk relief for the Tigers on Tuesday in Baltimore, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact
Brant Hurter will open for the Tigers before handing things off to Gipson-Long. Gipson-Long allowed three runs over 3.2 innings last week against the White Sox in his first start at the big-league level since Tommy John and hip surgeries. He threw 70 pitches in that outing, so the righty should be capable of 80-plus on Tuesday.

Awarded another start
Gipson-Long is scheduled to start Tuesday's game in Baltimore, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact
Gipson-Long could be at risk of a demotion to the bullpen or Triple-A Toledo once the likes of Reese Olson (finger), Jackson Jobe (elbow) and Alex Cobb (hip) return from the injured list, but the 27-year-old righty will be in store for at least one more turn through the Detroit rotation after making his 2025 MLB debut this past Wednesday. In his first big-league start since 2023 following a lengthy recovery from Tommy John surgery and hip surgery, Gipson-Long took a no-decision against the White Sox, covering 3.2 innings and striking out three while allowing three earned runs on five hits and one walk. He tossed 70 pitches in that start but could push up to the 80-to-90 range during his upcoming outing Tuesday.
