Cubs host Padres (Canning 1-5, 7.38) in series opener
Wrigley Field
Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL
Griffin Canning - Starting Monday Canning will draw the start on the mound in Monday's contest against the Cubs, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Canning will operate as a traditional starter in the series opener versus Chicago after following an opener in each of his last two appearances. The right-hander has given up 12 runs on 14 hits and nine walks while striking out 10 batters and hitting another over 10 innings in his last three outings, and he'll be squaring off with a Cubs squad that has won six of their last seven contests.

Germán Márquez - Could be in mix to pitch Monday Marquez (forearm) didn't make his scheduled rehab start Sunday with Triple-A El Paso and could return from the 15-day injured list to appear Monday in the Padres' series opener aga...
Impact Marquez had already made five rehab appearances (four starts) with El Paso this month, building up to as many five innings and 73 pitches back on June 17. Though he had been scheduled to start Sunday, Marquez ended up working out of the El Paso bullpen in his most recent appearance Tuesday, when he struck out three and allowed one run over 1.2 innings. The Padres seem to be keeping their options open with Marquez's role for when he returns, but if he's activated Monday, he'll most likely be deployed as a starter -- albeit on a limited pitch count -- or a bulk reliever. Griffin Canning is also available on five days' rest and could be part of Monday's pitching plan.

Pete Crow-Armstrong - Reaches 20 stolen bases Crow-Armstrong went 0-for-2 with three walks, a run scored and a stolen base in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Brewers.
Impact Despite going hitless, Crow-Armstrong found plenty of ways to impact Sunday's game. He drew three walks, scored a run during Chicago's decisive three-run 10th inning and swiped his 20th base of the season in the sixth. The outfielder has shown elite plate discipline of late, drawing at least one walk in eight of his last 10 games while batting .289 (11-for-38) over that span. Through 84 games, Crow-Armstrong is slashing .278/.364/.505 with 17 home runs, 13 doubles, four triples, 45 RBI and 51 runs scored.
1 HOUR AGO ROTOWIRE
Matt Waldron - Makes third rehab appearance Waldron (forearm) struck out four and allowed two earned runs on two hits and four walks across 2.2 innings Thursday in a rehab start with Triple-A El Paso.
Impact Waldron has now made three rehab starts with El Paso and built up to 59 pitches during Thursday's outing. Though the Padres are seemingly letting Waldron get stretched back out as a starter, he may need to show improved results on the farm in order to get a look in the big-league rotation.
1 HOUR AGO ROTOWIRE
Bryse Wilson - Impresses in Cubs debut Wilson did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Brewers, allowing four hits while striking out four over 4.1 scoreless innings.
Impact After being claimed by the Cubs on June 24, Wilson made his team debut by entering in the third inning after opener Ryan Rolison tossed two innings of one-run ball. The right-hander pounded the zone, throwing 46 of his 61 pitches for strikes while keeping Milwaukee off the scoreboard. It was Wilson's second major-league appearance of the season after previously tossing two scoreless innings in relief for the Phillies. He has spent most of the year at Triple-A, where he owns a 6.29 ERA and 58:21 K:BB across 54.1 innings. With Chicago's pitching staff dealing with multiple injuries, Wilson could continue to see opportunities as either a rotation piece or a multi-inning reliever.
