Adjustments needed
The Diamondbacks want Waldschmidt to work on hitting breaking stuff in the minors, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.
Impact
Waldschmidt initially handled MLB pitching with aplomb, but the league adjusted with heavy doses of spin and the strikeouts piled up. The prospect carried a 56.2 Whiff rate against breaking balls and a 32.8 percent overall strikeout rate back to Triple-A Reno. "The league made a little adjustment, started spinning a lot of pitches, making it tougher for him at a level of which he's never seen," Diamondbacks hitting coach Joe Mather told Arizona Sports. In addition to learning to hit breaking stuff, manager Torey Lovullo wants Waldschmidt to improve at controlling counts and not swing at pitcher's pitches.

Officially optioned back to minors
The Diamondbacks optioned Waldschmidt to Triple-A Reno on Monday.
Impact
With Jordan Lawlar returning last week and Lourdes Gurriel (hamstring) being activated Monday, the Diamondbacks' outfield suddenly got crowded, pushing Waldschmidt back to the minors. The rookie has managed just a .180/.231/.262 batting line and 36.9 percent strikeout rate across his last 17 contests.

Appears headed back to Triple-A
The Diamondbacks are expected to option Waldschmidt to Triple-A Reno prior to Monday's game against the Angels, GoPHNX.com reports.
Impact
With Jordan Lawlar recently coming back from the 60-day IL and Lourdes Gurriel (hamstring) on track to return from the 10-day IL this week, Waldschmidt looks like he'll be caught up in a numbers game in the Arizona outfield. Regarded as one of the top prospects in Arizona's system, Waldschmidt submitted an .881 OPS in his first 16 games in the majors following his May 8 promotion, but he's slashed just .180/.231/.262 with a 4.6 percent walk rate and 36.9 percent strikeout rate in his 17 games since. The impending assignment to Reno should enable Waldschmidt to get a mental reset, and if he's able to resume raking in the Pacific Coast League, he may not have to wait long before earning another call-up.

Sitting amid cold spell
Waldschmidt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.
Impact
The Diamondbacks will keep Waldschmidt on the bench for the second time in four games while the rookie has hit a bit of a rough patch over the past few weeks. Waldschmidt has struck out at least once in each of his last 10 games and is slashing .211/.250/.316 with no home runs or stolen bases and just one run and one RBI over that stretch.

Getting breather Thursday
Waldschmidt is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest in Miami.
Impact
It looks to be a routine day off for Waldschmidt, who had started each of the previous eight tilts. Jorge Barrosa will patrol center field and bat ninth as the Diamondbacks look to avoid the sweep.

Moves up order
Waldschmidt batted sixth and went 0-for-5 in Monday's 6-2 win over San Francisco.
Impact
Waldschmidt moved up the batting order from ninth to sixth the last two games, as the Diamondbacks incorporated recent call-up Tommy Troy into the lineup. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo slotted Waldschmidt there Sunday and told Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports that upon further reflection, he liked what he saw from the rookie. "I thought [Sunday] it was mostly a reflection of the lineup and who was not in the lineup that pushed him forward," Lovullo said. "But I like the way it looked and I'll probably stay with that for a little while." Waldschmidt has never gone more than one game without a hit since being called up and is batting .321 with five extra-base hits, five steals, seven RBI and nine runs scored over 17 games.

Tallies first triple in blowout win
Waldschmidt went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple, a run scored and a stolen base in Sunday's win over Colorado.
Impact
Waldschmidt got in on the offensive onslaught, sending a rocket past center fielder Jake McCarthy for an RBI triple, the first three-bagger of the rookie's big-league career. While Waldschmidt is still searching for his first homer, the top prospect has been fantastic since being promoted May 8. Across 57 plate appearances, the 23-year-old is slashing .353/.411/.471 with four doubles, seven RBI, nine runs and five stolen bases.

Records steal in loss
Waldschmidt went 2-for-3 with a stolen base in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Rockies.
Impact
Waldschmidt had three multi-hit efforts over his last five games, going 7-for-14 (.500) with three walks and three steals in that span. The outfielder has taken on a starting job in center field this month, and his bat has been a big reason why. He's hitting .326 with an .815 OPS, six RBI, seven runs scored, four steals and four doubles over his first 14 big-league games. He's still looking for his first home run, but his calling card in the minors was plate discipline more than power.

Productive performance in big win
Waldschmidt went 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI, two runs scored, two steals and a walk in Monday's win over the Giants.
Impact
Waldschmidt turned in the best offensive performance of his young career, tallying a pair of doubles as part of his first three-hit effort in the majors. The 23-year-old also turned it loose on the basepaths, recording the first multi-steal game of his career. The early returns through 10 contests have been promising, as Waldschmidt is slashing .313/.371/.438 with four doubles, six RBI, three runs and three stolen bases.
