INJURIES

Carted off with knee injury Guzman left Monday's game with a right knee injury, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact The Rangers announced that it is indeed a knee injury for Guzman and that he's still being evaluated after the 26-year-old was carted off the field Monday. A first baseman by trade, Guzman was making his first career start in left field and got hurt avoiding a collision on the first ball hit to him.

Carted off field Monday Guzman had to be carted off the field Monday with an apparent leg injury, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact Making his first career start in left field, Guzman got a late break on a flyball and ended up dodging to avoid a collision with his teammates. He pulled up, had to be carted off and got into a wheelchair upon leaving the field. Eli White replaced Guzman in the game.

Bullpen shines as Padres blank Rangers for 3-game sweep

Makes second start Guzman started at first base and went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Blue Jays.
Impact Guzman, who made his second start in five games, launched his first homer, the lone hit over nine at-bats. He challenged for the starting first base job that eventually went to Nate Lowe, who has been the hottest thing in Texas. Lowe has 14 RBI and a 1.266 OPS, so he's not going to be dislodged. That leaves a random fill-in at first base while Lowe serves as the designated hitter, which he did Tuesday, or DH for Guzman. That spot is unsettled at the moment, but once Willie Calhoun (groin) and/or Khris Davis (quadriceps) return, there will be little room for Guzman. The Rangers exposed him to left field during spring training, but there's a similar logjam there.

Wins bench spot Guzman will make the Rangers' Opening Day roster as a backup first baseman and corner outfielder, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.
Impact Guzman doesn't have a clear starting spot but should still earn the occasional opportunity. There will be extra starts available early in the season with both of the team's primary designated hitter candidates, Willie Calhoun (groin) and Khris Davis (quadriceps), set to open on the injured list.

Lowe's patience, Guzman's urgency mark Texas battle at 1B

Nate Lowe prefers the patient approach at the plate in spring training even though he's competing to be the everyday first baseman for the Texas Rangers

Plays right field Guzman started in right field and went 1-for-2 with a walk in Monday's spring game against the Cubs.
Impact This was his second spring start in the outfield; the first came in left field. Typically a first baseman, Guzman's been swinging a good bat this spring (5-for-9), making the Rangers consider keeping both him and Nate Lowe on the roster. Developing Guzman's positional flexibility would make it easier to head into the season with two first basemen.

Blasts second long ball Guzman started at first base and went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Saturday's spring game against Arizona.
Impact Guzman is having a strong start to Cactus League play, with four hits and two home runs through seven at-bats. The Rangers presumably acquired Nate Lowe during the offseason to be the starting first baseman, but Guzman is making it difficult for the team to move on from him.

Starts in left field Guzman made his first start in left field Wednesday and went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored against the Angels, Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact The Rangers are exploring the possibility of rostering both Guzman and Nate Lowe, two first baseman whose presence on the roster would be redundant -- hence the need for one or both to add some versatility. Guzman has taken quickly to the outfield, per manager Chris Woodward, which raises the potential for both to make the Opening Day roster. He also has three hits, including a home run, over his first five spring at-bats.

Lowe chance to be starting 1B for rebuilding Texas Rangers

Nate Lowe is getting a chance this spring to become the starting first baseman for the Texas Rangers

Goes yard Tuesday Guzman went 1-for-1 with a walk and a solo home run in Tuesday's spring game against the White Sox.
Impact Guzman is off to a good start with hits in each of his first two Cactus League games. He's locked in a battle with Nate Lowe for the starting first base job and is out of minor-league options. It may not be optimal for Texas to carry two first-base-only players, so spring training will likely lead to one failing to make the big-league roster.

Starts at 1B Guzman started at first base and went 1-for-2 win Sunday's spring game against the Royals.
Impact Guzman was given the first crack at first base, a position that will be a runoff between him and Nate Lowe. The Rangers tired of waiting for the 26-year-old to develop at the plate and acquired Lowe, but Guzman revamped his swing during the offseason and earned an MVP award at the Dominican Winter League. He brought that new swing to spring training, and the Rangers are anxious to see the outcome. Guzman's out of minor league options, so he'll need to hit this spring if he's going to stick with the team.
MARCH 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Could get outfield reps Texas manager Chris Woodward indicated that Guzman could see practice reps in right field, Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact Guzman is locked in a competition with Nate Lowe for the starting first base job, and it's unlikely the Rangers keep both unless each has a strong spring. In that scenario, finding a path to get both bats in the lineup would be ideal. Woodward added that plans to add to Guzman's defensive repertoire are still in the beginning stages.
FEBRUARY 26, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Enters competition for 1B Guzman is expected to compete with Nate Lowe for the starting job at first base, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact The addition of Lowe appeared to indicate Guzman was not in the Rangers' long-term plans, but the 26-year-old Guzman is coming off a strong performance in the Dominican Winter League. He was named the league's MVP for posting a .973 OPS with five home runs and 13 RBI over 131 plate appearances. The three-year veteran has been a disappointment for Texas, failing to take hold of the first base job.
