INJURIES

Released by Boston The Red Sox released Perez on Tuesday.
Impact Perez has been on the injured list at Triple-A Worcester all season as he recovered from right rotator cuff surgery. The team had been hoping he could be game-ready by now, but that wasn't the case and it's uncertain when he might be ready to play. Perez will look to latch on with another organization.
JULY 3, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Has season-ending shoulder surgery Perez underwent season-ending surgery Wednesday to repair his right rotator cuff, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.
Impact Perez suffered a severe strain of his right rotator cuff in just his second week with the Giants, after starting behind the plate in five of their first seven games. He'll be a free agent this winter. Joey Bart has another opportunity here to establish himself as the immediate and long-term answer at catcher in San Francisco, though Rule 5 pick Blake Sabol has also been a factor in the early going and Gary Sanchez is currently getting built up at Triple-A Sacramento.
APRIL 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Lands on 60-day injured list Perez was placed on the 60-day injured list Saturday with a right rotator cuff strain, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.
Impact Perez exited Friday's game against Kansas City with the injury and will now be sidelined for at least the next two months. The 34-year-old was operating as San Francisco's primary backstop, but Blake Sabol and a newly-promoted Austin Wynns will now handle the catching duties until Joey Bart (back) returns from the injured list.
APRIL 8, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Diagnosed with shoulder strain Perez left Friday's game against Kansas City with a right shoulder strain, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact While the severity of Perez's injury and how long he might be inactive remain unknown, it seems like the Giants avoided what could have been a much worse fate. Blake Sabol will assume primary catching duties while Perez and Joey Bart (back) work their way back from injury.
APRIL 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Exits early with injury Perez left Friday's game against the Royals after throwing to second base in an attempt to catch Kyle Isbel stealing, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Perez immediately headed for the dugout after making the throw, seemingly in quite a bit of pain. The Giants will take a look at him and should provide an update relatively soon. If he's forced to remain out for an extended period of time, Blake Sabol will become the only active catcher on San Francisco's roster.
APRIL 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Not in lineup Thursday Perez is not in the lineup Thursday afternoon against the White Sox.
Impact Sabol will take a turn behind the plate and bat ninth versus the White Sox and right-handed starter Lance Lynn. LaMonte Wade is in left field and batting leadoff. Perez seems to have emerged as the Giants' primary catcher, but he'll grab some rest during Thursday's matinee game in Chicago.
APRIL 6, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Serving as primary backstop Perez will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's game against the White Sox, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Perez has now started behind the dish in three of the Giants' first four games of the season, and he'll likely remain the team's preferred option behind the dish for the foreseeable future after Joey Bart (back) was moved to the injured list over the weekend. The Giants have Rule 5 pick Blake Sabol on hand as another option at catcher, but he should see the bulk of his action in left field while Mitch Haniger (oblique) is on the shelf. Perez has gone 1-for-6 with four strikeouts through his first two games and is a career .207/.298/.359 hitter (77 wRC+) over parts of 10 seasons in the majors, so he likely won't be anything more than a low-end No. 2 option in leagues that start two catchers while he's receiving steady plate appearances.

Catcher Gary Sánchez gets minor league deal from Giants

Catcher Gary Sánchez agreed to a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants and will report to Triple-A Sacramento
APRIL 1, 2023 • Associated Press
Joins roster, starting Opening Day The Giants selected Perez's contract Thursday, and he'll start at catcher and bat ninth in San Francisco's Opening Day game at Yankee Stadium, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francis...
Impact The team had already made it known a few days earlier that Perez would make the Opening Day roster, but it's still somewhat surprising that he's getting the starting nod Thursday over Joey Bart, who had been expected to see the lion's share of the work behind the dish in 2023. The fact that Perez is drawing the first start of the season could hint that a timeshare between the two backstops could be in place until Bart shows more improved plate discipline after he struck out at a 38.5 percent clip in 2022.
MARCH 30, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Will make Opening Day roster Perez will be a part of San Francisco's Opening Day roster, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Perez was signed to a minor league-deal with an invite to MLB spring training, and the Giants will have to purchase his contract in the coming days. He could see a good deal of playing time in 2023, but he likely will open the year as the backup backstop to Joey Bart.
MARCH 25, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Joining San Francisco Perez agreed to a contract with the Giants on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Impact Perez played in just 21 games for Pittsburgh last season before he ruptured his right hamstring and underwent season-ending surgery. The 34-year-old could open 2023 by splitting playing time with Joey Bart, who had a .660 OPS in his first full season as a starter behind the plate last year.

Could be ready for winter ball Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Perez (hamstring) may receive full medical clearance for the start of winter ball, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghS...
Impact After undergoing surgery May 20 to repair a ruptured right hamstring, Perez won't be a candidate to return from the 60-day IL before the end of the season, but his projected 6-to-9-month recovery timeline gives him a chance at being ready to play in December. The native Puerto Rican could elect to play winter ball on his home island or perhaps elsewhere in Latin America this winter with the hope of proving his health and securing a contract with an MLB team ahead of spring training. The 33-year-old backstop posted a .700 OPS in 69 plate appearances for the Pirates before sustaining the season-ending injury.

Undergoes surgery Perez underwent surgery to repair a ruptured hamstring injury Friday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
Impact The Pirates announced this week that Perez would miss the remainder of the season following his procedure, and he'll now shift his focus toward his lengthy recovery process. The team hopes Perez will be able to resume full baseball activities in 6-to-9 months, so it seems likely that he'll be available to begin the 2023 season.

Gets season-ending surgery The Pirates announced Wednesday that Perez will undergo season-ending surgery on his left hamstring in the near future, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.
Impact Perez, who signed a one-year, $5 million deal with Pittsburgh in November, appeared in just 21 games before hitting the shelf earlier this month with what ultimately proved to be a season-ending injury. The Pirates will likely lean on a platoon of Michael Perez and Tyler Heineman at catcher the rest of the way, barring any further additions to the position group.
MAY 18, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Moves to 60-day IL The Pirates transferred Perez (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.
Impact Other than characterizing the hamstring injury Perez sustained Saturday as significant or severe, the Pirates brass has yet to provide any sort of timeline for the catcher's return to the lineup. Perez's move to the 60-day IL at least ensures that he'll be on the shelf until early July, and it wouldn't be surprise if the Pirates went ahead and held him out through the All-Star break. Michael Perez and Andrew Knapp are expected to share work behind the dish while the Pirates' No. 1 backstop is sidelined.
MAY 11, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Facing extended absence Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Sunday that Perez's strained left hamstring is on the "more severe side of things," suggesting that the catcher could be in store for a...
Impact Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette adds that Perez was spotted walking around the Pittsburgh clubhouse Sunday with the aid of crutches, which seemingly supports Cherington's comments about the veteran backstop being at risk of an extended absence. A clear timeline for Perez's return may not emerge until the results of his MRI are known, but Andrew Knapp is expected to be the first man up to step in as the Pirates' No. 1 catcher. Pittsburgh also called up Michael Perez from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday to add depth behind the plate.
MAY 8, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Decisions Pirates face with (reportedly not minor) injury to Roberto Perez Ben Cherington said Sunday that Roberto Perez’s hamstring injury “may be on the longer side.” So what does that mean?
MAY 8, 2022 • POST-GAZETTE.COM
Roberto Perez to 10-day injured list with hamstring strain, Michael Perez promoted from Class AAA Before game 2 of a doubleheader in Cincinnati, the Pirates selected the contract of Michael Perez and designated Sam Howard for assignment.
MAY 7, 2022 • POST-GAZETTE.COM
Heads to injured list Perez was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a strained left hamstring.
Impact Perez exited the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Reds with what was originally called left hamstring discomfort, but considering that he had to be helped off the field, it's no surprise to see his diagnosis already updated to something more serious. He doesn't yet have a clear return date but will be out for at least 10 days, with Michael Perez joining the active roster to split time at catcher with Andrew Knapp.
