INJURIES

Notches 10th hold Suarez picked up a hold against the Cardinals on Wednesday with a perfect inning of work.
Impact Padres starter Blake Snell tossed seven scoreless frames before departing having thrown 117 pitches. Suarez was called upon to be the bridge to closer Josh Hader and needed just 12 pitches to retire St. Louis in order. It was the former's seventh outing in September, and he's yet to give up a run this month. Suarez has emerged as a key high-leverage arm for San Diego this season, posting a 2.63 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 49:18 K:BB over 41 innings while notching four wins, one save and 10 holds.
SEPTEMBER 22, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Works eighth inning Sunday Suarez earned a hold against the Nationals on Sunday, allowing two hits and striking out two batters in one inning of work.
Impact When closer Josh Hader was demoted out of the role Saturday, some though Suarez could be first in line to soak up his save opportunities. That hasn't been the case so far, as Luis Garcia got a save Saturday and Nick Martinez notched one Sunday. Suarez was chosen to work the eighth inning in Sunday's contest, and he recorded his sixth straight scoreless appearance despite surrendering a pair of hits. There's still a chance Suarez could get an occasional closing chance while Hader tries to regain his form, but it's evident that he'll compete with others for such opportunities.
AUGUST 22, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Candidate for save chances Suarez could see save chances after manager Bob Melvin told Dennis Lin of The Athletic that the team will give Josh Hader "a little break" from the closer role.
Impact Suarez lost a large chunk of the campaign to a knee injury, but he's been great since his return, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out six over seven innings. Following back-to-back scoreless, multi-strikeout appearances, Suarez is now down to a 2.67 ERA and 1.09 WHIP for the season. He was a star closer in Japan before making the jump to MLB this year.
AUGUST 20, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Allows run in return Suarez pitched one inning against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits. He didn't strike out or walk any batters.
Impact Suarez missed two months due to knee surgery, and this was his first appearance for San Diego following a minor-league rehab stint that kicked off in late July. The right-hander showed some rust, allowing a run on a pair of doubles. The Padres were down by four when Suarez entered the game in the eighth inning, so this was an opportunity for the reliever to get in some work in a low-leverage situation. He'll likely function in more of a setup role once he gets ramped back up.
AUGUST 7, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Back from injured list Suarez (knee) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Saturday.
Impact Suarez returns to the 40-man and 26-man rosters after he underwent a cleanup procedure on his knee back in June. A star closer in Japan, Suarez has only earned one save to date in his rookie season in Major League Baseball. However, he's proven to be a more-than-capable bullpen arm with a 3.09 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 29:13 K:BB in 22 appearances.

Begins rehab assignment Suarez (knee) began a rehab assignment Tuesday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Suarez landed on the injured list after undergoing knee surgery in early June, but he is ready for the final step in his recovery. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list earlier this month, but he could be ready to return when first eligible Aug. 5.
JULY 26, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Shifts to 60-day IL Suarez (knee) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Suarez has been sidelined for the past month after undergoing knee surgery, and he'll now remain on the shelf until at least early August. The right-hander recently progressed to throwing bullpen sessions, and he should continue building up his workload over the next few weeks.
JULY 12, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Tosses bullpen session Suarez (knee) threw a bullpen session Friday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Suarez had orthoscopic surgery on his right knee June 9, and he's been working through a throwing progression since early July. The bullpen session Friday was his first since the surgery was performed. Suarez could be back shortly after the All-Star break. He posted a 3.09 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 29:13 K:BB over 23.1 innings while notching a save, two wins and five holds before going on the shelf.
JULY 11, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Undergoes knee surgery Suarez recently underwent knee surgery to clean up "some loose impediments" and will be shut down for a few weeks, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact While it's discouraging that Suarez required a procedure to address his knee injury, it seems unlikely that he'll require a significant absence. The right-hander will spend more than the minimum of 15 days on the injured list, and a better timetable for his return should come into focus once he ultimately resumes throwing.
JUNE 10, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Placed on 15-day injured list Suarez was placed on the 15-day injured list with right knee inflammation Tuesday.
Impact Suarez struck out nine in six scoreless innings over his last six relief appearances, but he's apparently dealing with a knee injury that will force him to miss at least two weeks. A timetable for his return hasn't yet been revealed, but left-hander Adrian Morejon was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to take his place in the bullpen.
JUNE 7, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Notches first career save Suarez earned a save against the Giants on Friday, allowing an unearned run on one hit while striking out one over one inning.
Impact With closer Taylor Rogers unavailable for San Diego, the team turned to Luis Garcia to hold a two-run, ninth-inning lead. He was unable to do so, but the Padres put up a pair of runs in the top of the 10th and handed the ball to Suarez in the bottom of the frame. The right-hander came through with his first career save despite allowing the inherited runner to score on a one-out single. Since being knocked around for three runs in his season debut, Suarez has posted a 2.20 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB across 16.1 innings.
MAY 21, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up third hold Tuesday Suarez earned a hold Tuesday against the Cubs, allowing one hit and striking out two in one scoreless inning.
Impact Suarez came on in the seventh inning with the Padres up by two runs. He gave up a two-out single but otherwise had no problem getting through the frame. The right-hander entered the season as the Padres' projected closer before the team traded for Taylor Rogers. Suarez had a rough first outing, giving up three earned runs without notching an out, but since then he has posted a 1.80 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB across 15 innings.

Tagged with relief loss Suarez (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief Thursday against Arizona after allowing three runs on zero hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch without recording an out.
Impact Suarez's command was all over the place, as he tossed just four of his 15 pitches for strikes. The 31-year-old right-hander was making his MLB debut after emerging as a closer in Japan the last two years, but the Padres' addition of Taylor Rogers likely relegates Suarez to a setup or middle-relief role to begin the season.
APRIL 8, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Likely favorite for closer role Suarez appears to be the favorite to close games for the Padres this season, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Suarez signed with the Padres in November following a five-season stint in Japan, and he has been excellent in Cactus League play, allowing only one run while posting a 7:0 K:BB across four innings. The 31-year-old hasn't yet logged a save this spring but racked up 67 saves during his final two campaigns in Japan. Emilio Pagan could still be in the running for San Diego's closer job as well, but he hasn't been as sharp in Cactus League action, allowing five runs in 4.1 frames.

MARCH 31, 2022 • SANDIEGOUNIONTRIBUNE.COM
One of top closing candidates Suarez and Emilio Pagan look like the readiest options at closer for the Padres, speculates Dennis Lin of The Athletic.
Impact This doesn't seem to be tied to any firm reporting, just Lin's expertise from being around the team this spring. Suarez, 31, emerged as one of the top closers in Japan over the last two years and got a $5 million deal with the Padres this winter.
