Makes statement to start spring
Snelling tossed a perfect first inning in the Marlins' Grapefruit League game against the Mets on Saturday.
Impact
Getting the start in Miami's spring opener, Snelling faced down Marcus Semien, Juan Soto and Bo Bichette and retired them on just 10 pitches (six strikes). The young left-hander doesn't have a clear path to a spot in the Opening Day rotation following the signing of Chris Paddack, but after an astonishing close to the 2025 campaign with Triple-A Jacksonville in which he posted a 1.27 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 81:17 K:BB over 63.2 innings, Snelling could force the Marlins to make a tough choice with a strong performance in camp.

Gets nod to open spring schedule
Snelling will start for the Marlins in their Grapefruit League opener Saturday against the Mets, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The southpaw is only set to work one inning, but Snelling is in camp looking to make as many good impressions as possible. Miami doesn't have a spot for him in the Opening Day rotation after signing Chris Paddack, but after being named the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2025, Snelling could be the next man up in case of an injury. The 22-year-old delivered a dazzling 1.27 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 81:17 K:BB over 11 starts and 63.2 innings for Triple-A Jacksonville last season after a mid-July promotion from Double-A.

Given spring training invite
The Marlins have extended Snelling an invitation to big-league camp during spring training.
Impact
It was a bit surprising Snelling wasn't called up late last season, given that he finished with a 1.27 ERA and 81:17 K:BB over 63.2 innings after being promoted to Triple-A Jacksonville. He does, however, have a good chance to break camp in the major-league rotation after the Marlins traded away Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers. Snelling -- who was acquired from the Padres at the 2024 trade deadline in a deal that sent Tanner Scott to San Diego -- finished with a 2.51 ERA and 166:39 K:BB across 136 frames covering 25 starts between Double-A Pensacola and Jacksonville in 2025.

Nothing left to prove at Triple-A
Snelling allowed one run on seven hits over seven innings for Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday, striking out a career-high 13 without walking a batter.
Impact
The lack of a spot on the 40-man roster seems to be the only thing keeping Snelling from making his major-league debut in 2025. The 21-year-old southpaw has delivered seven straight quality starts at Triple-A, fanning double-digit batters three times during that stretch while producing a 1.24 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 62:9 K:BB through 43.2 innings. The Marlins have so far declined to promote Snelling despite having six starting pitchers on the IL at the moment, but despite the team's apparent desire to delay starting his service-time clock, he clearly has nothing left to learn in the International League.

Pushing hard for promotion
Snelling allowed four hits and three walks over six scoreless innings for Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday. He struck out eight.
Impact
The 21-year-old southpaw hasn't given up an earned run in 21 straight innings for the Jumbo Shrimp, and he's worked at least six innings in five straight starts, delivering a stunning 0.88 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 46:6 K:BB over 30.2 innings during that dominant stretch. Ryan Gusto is getting called up Friday to take the open spot in the Marlins' rotation created when Cal Quantrill was waived, but Snelling has done everything he can to demonstrate he's ready for a big-league audition over the final weeks of the season.

Keeps dominating at Triple-A
Snelling gave up five hits and a walk over six scoreless innings for Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday. He struck out 11.
Impact
It's the second time in three starts that Snelling has fanned 11 batters, and in five outings since his promotion to Jacksonville, the 21-year-old southpaw has a dazzling 1.63 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 34:5 K:BB over 27.2 innings. He isn't on the 40-man roster and hasn't yet been shifted to a five-day schedule that would mirror a big-league rotation, so the Marlins may not have immediate plans to bring him up. Snelling appears ready for the majors though, and a promotion in the second half of August would still preserve his rookie status for 2026.

Sets new career high in Ks
Snelling gave up two runs on four hits over 6.2 innings for Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday, striking out 11 without walking a batter.
Impact
It was the best performance of the 21-year-old lefty's career, with the 11 Ks representing a new personal best. Snelling has been impressive since getting bumped up to Triple-A, posting a 2.30 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB over 15.2 innings, and if the Marlins find new homes for the likes of Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera at the trade deadline, Snelling could be among the replacements called up to fortify the big-league rotation.

Making case for promotion
Snelling allowing three hits over seven scoreless innings for Double-A Pensacola on Wednesday, striking out seven without issuing a walk.
Impact
The 21-year-old southpaw seems to have turned a corner since a rough stretch in late April and early May in which he walked 13 batters over 9.2 innings. Over six starts since then, Snelling has compiled a much tidier 35:5 K:BB in 35.1 innings, along with a 2.80 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. He's knocking on the door of a promotion to Triple-A, and given the injuries that have wracked the Marlins' rotation, a big-league debut in 2025 can't be ruled out if he continues to display improved control and command.

Better since trade
Snelling has a 3.77 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 32:10 K:BB in 31 innings across six starts for Double-A Pensacola.
Impact
The Marlins acquired Snelling as part of the deadline deal that sent Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing to the Padres. The 20-year-old lefty had a mediocre 10.3 K-BB% prior to the trade and has a 17.1 K-BB% since the deal. Snelling is the youngest qualified starter at Double-A and has now logged 100-plus innings in back-to-back minor-league campaigns.

Traded to Fish
Snelling is part of the prospect package going from San Diego to Miami in exchange for Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact
Snelling is the youngest qualified pitcher at Double-A, which helps explain some of his struggles this season. He had a 6.01 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and a 67:33 K:BB in 73.1 innings across 16 starts in the Texas League. Snelling has been capable of strong performances this year, including several starts in which he allowed one earned run or fewer with five-plus strikeouts over at least five innings, but he has lacked consistency, mixing in multiple starts in which he gave up more runs than innings pitched. The Marlins will likely assign Snelling to Double-A Pensacola, and if he can display more consistency, he could join the big-league rotation at some point in 2025.

Promoted to Double-A
The Padres promoted Snelling from High-A Fort Wayne to Double-A San Antonio on Sunday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact
The Padres are moving several prospects up in their farm system Sunday, and Snelling will attempt to prove himself at the Double-A level after a month and a half with the High-A club. Over seven outings at Fort Wayne, he posted a 2.34 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 34.2 innings.

Moves up to High-A
The Padres promoted Snelling from Single-A Lake Elsinore to High-A Fort Wayne on Tuesday.
Impact
Snelling made his High-A debut Sunday, striking out four Lake County batters over five innings while giving up two earned runs on four hits and two walks. Prior to receiving the bump up to Fort Wayne, Snelling had been one of the most dominant pitchers in the California League, logging a 1.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 59:13 K:BB in 51.2 innings.
