Battles control in short start
Ray (11-8) took the loss against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks while striking out one batter over 2.1 innings.
Impact
Ray breezed through the first inning, retiring the side in order on three groundouts while tossing just eight pitches. The rest of the lefty's start went in the complete opposite direction, however, as he gave up four runs on three hits and three walks in the second frame and another run on two hits and a walk in the third before being pulled with one out. Overall, Ray threw just 36 of 68 pitches for strikes and notched only four whiffs. Control has long been an issue for the veteran hurler, and things haven't changed since he's joined the Padres, as Ray has now walked 20 batters over 29 innings across six starts with his new club. He had mostly gotten away with the free passes coming into Saturday, yielding two or fewer runs in four straight outings, but there's always going to be a risk of an implosion with a pitcher who puts runners on via walks as frequently as Ray does.

Collects second win with Padres
Ray did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Rays, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings.
Impact
Ray's only blemish came when Junior Caminero led off the fourth inning with a solo homer. The left-hander has now held opponents to two or fewer runs in four of his five starts since joining the Padres, posting a 3.42 ERA during that span, though his control remains a concern with a 5.5 BB/9. Through 149 innings this season, Ray owns a 3.14 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 126:73 K:BB. His next start is scheduled for the Yankees on Saturday.

Goes 5.1 frames in no-decision
Ray allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against Pittsburgh on Monday.
Impact
Ray and Braxton Ashcraft traded zeroes until the sixth inning, when Pittsburgh notched a pair of runs on Ray's ledger. The first came on an Esmerlyn Valdez solo homer, while the second run crossed the plate on a double after Ray departed. While his final frame spoiled Ray's shot at a second straight quality start, it was nonetheless an overall positive outing by the left-hander, who has given up two or fewer runs in three of his four outings since joining San Diego at the trade deadline. Ray will likely need to clean up his 15:13 K:BB across 20.1 innings during that span to build consistent success, but he's being counted on fortify a Padres rotation that could get back both Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Nick Pivetta (forearm) at some point in September.

Earns first win with Padres
Ray (11-7) earned the win in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Mets, allowing one run on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts over six innings.
Impact
Ray allowed a run in the fifth inning but otherwise kept the Mets in check despite throwing just 53 of 91 pitches for strikes. It was the southpaw's first quality start and victory in three turns with his new club, and he's posted a 4.20 ERA with an underwhelming 10:11 K:BB during that span. He'll carry a 3.20 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 117:68 K:BB across 137.2 innings with the Padres and Giants into a home matchup with the Pirates next week.

Goes four innings Wednesday
Ray did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Brewers, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out four.
Impact
Ray's now given up six runs in nine innings through his first two starts with San Diego after posting a 1.09 ERA over his final eight outings (49.1 innings) with the Giants before the trade deadline. Overall, Ray is 10-7 on the season with a 3.28 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 113:65 K:BB across 131.2 innings. He'll look to turn things around his next time out, tentatively slated to come next week on the road against the Mets.
