INJURIES

Retreats to bench Wednesday Pinto is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Pinto had started behind the dish in three of the Rays' last four games, going 3-for-11 with a home run and four RBI. Despite the uptick in playing time of late, Pinto is still expected to serve as the Rays' No. 2 catcher behind Christian Bethancourt, who is back behind the dish Wednesday. Pinto should still have a decent amount of job security on the major-league roster after the Rays designated Francisco Mejia (knee) for assignment Tuesday upon reinstating him from the 10-day injured list.

Summoned to majors Pinto was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact He's taking the roster spot vacated by Francisco Mejia, who has landed on the injured list with a sprained knee. Pinto just came back from an injury himself, having missed the last month with a bruised hand. He'll serve as Christian Bethancourt's backup.
JULY 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Nearing return Pinto (undisclosed) began a rehab assignment Monday, Kristie Ackert of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Pinto has been sidelined since late May with an undisclosed injury, though he appears to be nearing a return. He may get a chance in the majors immediately, as Francisco Mejia (knee) exited Thursday's game against the Orioles and could be forced to miss time.
JULY 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to Durham The Rays optioned Pinto to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Christian Bethancourt and Francisco Mejia have both made it through spring camp unscathed, so Pinto will be stationed at Durham as probably the No. 3 catcher on Tampa Bay's organizational depth chart. The 26-year-old batted just .213/.241/.325 over his first 83 major-league plate appearances in 2022.
MARCH 22, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Not on wild-card roster Pinto was left off the Rays' 26-man roster ahead of their AL Wild Card Series with the Guardians.
Impact With Francisco Mejia returning from the paternity list Friday, Pinto was no longer needed to serve as the backup option behind Christian Bethancourt at catcher heading into the postseason. The 25-year-old Pinto produced a .213 average with two homers, 10 RBI and five runs scored over 25 games in the big leagues this season and appears unlikely to be considered for a roster spot moving forward barring any injuries.
OCTOBER 7, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Serving as backup catcher Pinto was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times
Impact With Francisco Mejia getting placed on the paternity list, Pinto will serve as the Rays' backup catcher over the final two games of the season. Pinto is hitting .211 with two home runs in 79 plate appearances this season.
OCTOBER 4, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A Pinto was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Thursday.
Impact The Rays had been carrying Pinto as a third catcher, but they'll drop down to two backstops for the time being. Pinto is hitting .211/.241/.316 with two home runs in 24 games.
SEPTEMBER 22, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to minors Pinto was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact The 25-year-old was promoted in late July when Francisco Mejia (shoulder) landed on the 10-day IL, and Pinto will return to Triple-A after Mejia was reinstated Friday. Pinto has appeared in 22 games for Tampa Bay this year and has a .206/.239/.309 slash line and 43.7 percent strikeout rate in 71 plate appearances.
AUGUST 5, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Not in Thursday's lineup Pinto isn't starting Thursday against the Tigers, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact Pinto went 1-for-3 with a strikeout Wednesday against the Blue Jays and will take a seat for the second time in the last three games. Christian Bethancourt will take over behind the plate and bat ninth.
AUGUST 4, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Gets Tuesday off Pinto is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact After starting three of the past four games behind the plate, Pinto will cede catching duties to Christian Bethancourt on Tuesday. Though Pinto temporarily finds himself atop the depth chart at catcher, both he and Bethancourt could soon see their opportunities take a hit after top backstop Francisco Mejia (shoulder) was cleared to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with the Rays' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate.
AUGUST 2, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Stealing work from Bethancourt Pinto will start at catcher and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Guardians.
Impact After going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Saturday's 6-4 win, Pinto will be rewarded with his third start in the last four contests. He may have overtaken Christian Bethancourt as the Rays' top catcher while Francisco Mejia (shoulder) is on the shelf, but even if that's the case, Pinto's fantasy upside is minimal. In 64 plate appearances with the big club this season, Pinto is slashing .210/.234/.323 with two home runs and nine RBI.
JULY 31, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Rejoins big-league club Pinto was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact The 25-year-old was sent down July 11 after Tampa Bay acquired Christian Bethancourt, but Pinto will now return to the majors with Mike Zunino (shoulder) out for the year and Francisco Mejia (shoulder) also on the injured list. Pinto has a .204/.218/.315 slash line with two home runs and eight RBI in 17 games this year and should serve as the backup option to Bethancourt behind the plate until Mejia is reinstated.
JULY 26, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Dropped from active roster The Rays optioned Pinto to Triple-A Durham on Monday.
Impact Pinto was sent to the minors after Tampa Bay added another catcher to their ranks in Christian Bethancourt, whom the team acquired from the Athletics over the weekend. Though he had seemed to work his way into a timeshare behind the plate with Francisco Mejia while Mike Zunino (shoulder) has been on the shelf, Pinto didn't perform well enough to stick around as a third backstop. Over his month-long stay with the big club, Pinto slashed .205/.225/.282 across 12 games.
JULY 11, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Sharing time with Mejia Pinto will start at catcher and bat eighth in Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Pinto will stick in the lineup for the fourth time in six games and looks as though he's carving out more work behind the plate than anticipated following his call-up from Triple-A Durham on June 10 to help replace injured backstop Mike Zunino (shoulder). At the very least, Pinto is part of a timeshare at catcher with Francisco Mejia, who isn't holding up to his reputation as a bat-first backstop by producing a .629 OPS on the season.
JULY 5, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled from Triple-A Pinto was called up from Triple-A Durham on Friday.
Impact Pinto was recalled on Friday to take the open roster spot of Mike Zunino (shoulder) who was placed on the 10-day injured list. The catcher has gone 3-for-15 with a homer and two RBI in five games with the Rays this season.
JUNE 10, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Returns to Triple-A Pinto was optioned to Triple-A Durham after Wednesday's 3-0 win over the A's, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Pinto appeared in five games since being recalled from Durham on April 22, and he went 3-for-15 with a home run and two RBI. Francisco Mejia (illness) is expected to be activated from the COVID-19 injured list Thursday and resume his role as Tampa Bay's No. 2 catcher.
MAY 5, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Homers in debut Pinto went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in an 8-4 loss Tuesday against the Mariners.
Impact Pinto entered the game in the fifth inning as a defensive replacement after Mike Zunino left with a bicep strain. After striking out in his first at-bat, he homered off Matt Koch in the seventh for his first major-league hit. The 25-year-old has been in the Rays' organization since 2014, compiling a .278/.334/.434 batting line across eight minor league seasons. With Zunino leaving the game with an injury and Francisco Mejia on the COVID-19 injured list, Pinto may be in line for more playing time in the near future.
APRIL 27, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
After missing first game, Rene Pinto very happy to be with Rays Notes | Catcher who signed in 2013 relishes first callup. Plus, a Francisco Mejia COVID-19 update, and Vidal Brujan on the move.
APRIL 23, 2022 • TAMPABAY.COM
Joins big-league club Pinto was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Pinto missed out on Tampa Bay's Opening Day roster and has a .729 OPS through 12 games at Triple-A this season. He'll join the Rays for Friday's series opener with the Red Sox after Francisco Mejia tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed on the injured list. Pinto should operate as the backup to Mike Zunino and appears likely to make his major-league debut.
APRIL 22, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to minors Pinto was optioned to minor-league camp Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Pinto was in big-league camp after being added to the 40-man roster in November but never had much of a chance at making the Opening Day squad with Mike Zunino and Francisco Mejia healthy. He'll open the season at Triple-A Durham, where he hit .299/.327/.532 with 12 homers and 35 RBI in 52 games last season.
