Shut down again Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Mondesi (knee) has been shut down again, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Impact Mondesi resumed baseball activities at the beginning of August and had recently advanced to facing live pitching, but his surgically-repaired left knee is apparently barking again. The 28-year-old speedster has not appeared in a game at any level this season and time is running out for him to do so in 2023.

Faces live pitching Mondesi (knee) has progressed to facing live pitching at the Red Sox' spring training complex in Florida, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Impact He's also been running and taking grounders and it's possible Mondesi could be ready to play in games within a couple weeks. Mondesi just recently came back from a lengthy shutdown period as he worked to regain strength in his surgically repaired left knee, and it appears he's finally making some real progress. Joining the Red Sox before the end of the season has not been ruled out, but Mondesi still has plenty of hurdles to clear.

Impact Mondesi has been shut down from all baseball activity since June 13 while working to regain strength in his surgically repaired left knee, so this is a significant step in the right direction. However, the Red Sox have been quiet about a timetable for his return, making it unclear whether the 28-year-old could get back on the field before the 2023 campaign ends.

He noted that the team has "been working hard to get strength back in that leg" so that Mondesi can progress to game action, but "there's been this recurrent soreness" that hasn't allowed it to happen so the club is hitting the pause button. Mondesi almost certainly isn't going to come back before the All-Star break at this point, if he makes it back at all this season.

Impact Mondesi has been on the 60-day injured list since the beginning of the season due to the ACL tear he suffered last season. His rehab process has been slow, and although Mondesi has been without a return timeline all season, pausing all baseball activities will likely push back his season debut even further.
