Hits plateau in recovery
Cubs' manager Craig Counsell said Monday that Hodge (oblique) was "not making progress" in his recovery, Zoe Grossman of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Impact
Hodge was placed on the injured list May 18 with a left oblique strain and Counsell said Hodge was "in a good spot" Friday. However, Hodge's recovery has halted for unknown reasons, and he may require more than the minimum stay on the 15-day injured list. If that's the case, expect Daniel Palencia to continue to see ninth-inning work.

Officially placed on 15-day IL
The Cubs placed Hodge (oblique) on the 15-day injured list Tuesday.
Impact
Hodge has been diagnosed with a left oblique strain and will miss at least the next couple weeks. In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled Ethan Roberts from Triple-A Iowa. With Hodge sidelined, Daniel Palencia got the first save chance Monday against the Marlins but blew it, surrendering a pair of earned runs on two hits and one walk across 0.2 innings of work. Ryan Pressly should also vie for save opportunities.

Will require stint on IL
Hodge has suffered a left oblique injury and will be placed on the 15-day injured list, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Impact
Hodge last pitched Saturday against the White Sox, tossing a scoreless frame in the victory, but he evidently picked up the oblique injury at some point along the way. The club will need to rely on another arm in save opportunities while Hodge recovers, likely leaving Ryan Pressly as the team's top option moving forward.

Works ninth inning Saturday
Hodge worked around a hit to pitch a scoreless inning of relief Saturday, though it wasn't a save situation in a 7-3 win over the White Sox. He struck out one.
Impact
Hodge got some work for the first time in three days with the Cubs up four runs, so he was unable to qualify for his third save of the season. However, the righty did manage his second straight scoreless appearance, which comes on the heels of allowing three runs while retiring only one batter back on May 11. Hodge should still see save opportunities out of Chicago's bullpen, though Drew Pomeranz recorded the team's last save Monday, and veteran Ryan Pressly may reenter the mix at some point if he turns around his early-season struggles.

Sustains first loss Sunday
Hodge (2-1) allowed three runs on three hits while retiring just one batter to take the loss Sunday against the Mets.
Impact
A day after converting his second save of the season, Hodge struggled to replicate the positive results. The righty saw things crumble in the eighth inning with the score tied 2-2, and his ERA climbed from 4.24 to 5.71 in the process. Hodge was potentially gaining on Ryan Pressly as Chicago's preferred closing option, though this might set the former back to some degree. With Pressly's ERA sitting at 7.07, neither pitcher is inspiring much confidence from fantasy managers.

Converts save Saturday
Hodge earned a save against the Mets on Saturday, walking one batter in a scoreless and hitless inning of work.
Impact
With Chicago holding a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, manager Craig Counsell turned to Hodge to close things out. The right-hander walked the first batter he faced but was subsequently able to induce a double-play groundout by Francisco Lindor before retiring Juan Soto to end the game. Hodge's deployment Saturday against the heart of the Mets' order could be an indication that he's gaining traction as the preferred closing option for Chicago; Ryan Pressly did pitch an inning Friday, but that was in a non-save situation and was his first appearance following a nine-run, no-out implosion against the Giants on Tuesday. Hodge certainly hasn't been flawless this year -- he has an implosion of his own on his game log and has posted a poor 16:10 K:BB over 17 frames while recording a 4.24 ERA -- so the situation remains murky.

Tallies first save
Hodge struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning to collect his first save of the season in Wednesday's 7-6 win over the Dodgers.
Impact
With Ryan Pressly unavailable due to knee problems, manager Craig Counsell turned to Hodge to preserve a one-run lead in the ninth inning. The 24-year-old responded by retiring all three batters he faced in 14 pitches, striking out Shohei Ohtani in the process. Since allowing six earned runs in two-thirds of an inning against Arizona on Friday, Hodge has fired three shutout frames, lowering his ERA from 7.45 to 5.11.

Struggles badly Friday
Hodge allowed six runs on four hits and two walks while retiring only two batters in Friday's 13-11 win over the Diamondbacks.
Impact
Hodge entered in a tough spot, as he came on in the top of the eighth inning after Jordan Wicks allowed three straight hits to load the bases with no outs. Hodge proceeded to give up a Eugenio Suarez grand slam as part of a nightmare outing. The righty saw his ERA spike from 2.00 to 7.45 in the process. Hodge has the talent to turn things around, though it may take him some time to drop his ERA back to a more respectable level.
