Edmundo Sosa - Playing time on upswing Sosa will start at third base and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Phillies.

Impact With Nolan Arenado getting a rare day off, Sosa will fill in at the hot corner for what will be his fifth start in six contests. Sosa has benefited in part from Brendan Donovan (illness) sitting out the last three games, so Sosa will be at risk of falling back into a utility role whenever the rookie is cleared to rejoin the lineup.

Andrew Knizner - Overtakes Romine on depth chart Knizner will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Phillies.

Impact Though Knizner sat three times during a four-game stretch last week, he appears to have taken back the Cardinals' primary catcher role from Austin Romine. Knizner will be included in the lineup for the third time in four contests despite having produced an .096 batting average dating back to the start of June.

Johan Oviedo - Moves past hand issue Oviedo (hand) struck out two and worked around two hits over 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen Sunday in the Cardinals' 4-3 win over the Phillies.

Impact Oviedo had been pulled from his previous relief appearance July 4 against Atlanta after he was struck on his pitching hand by a comebacker, but a few days of rest was all he needed to heal up. With Sunday's scoreless outing, the 24-year-old lowered his ERA to 3.10 over 20.1 innings at the big-league level this season.

Zack Thompson - Headed for Memphis The Cardinals optioned Thompson to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.

Impact Thompson had started to hit his stride in a relief role for the Cardinals, as he struck out nine and turned in a 0.64 WHIP while tossing 11 scoreless innings across his last eight appearances. The demotion to the minors thus shouldn't be viewed as performance-related, with manager Oliver Marmol telling Katie Woo of The Athletic that the assignment to Memphis will allow Thompson to get stretched back out as a starter or as a multi-inning reliever, depending on the Cardinals' needs coming out of the All-Star break.

T.J. McFarland - Reinstated from IL McFarland (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Monday.

Impact McFarland landed in the league's health and safety protocols in late June but will rejoin the Cardinals' bullpen after spending just under three weeks away from the team. He made three rehab appearances at Triple-A Memphis over the last few days and allowed a hit and no walks while striking out three in three scoreless innings.
