Yankees try to keep win streak alive against the Red Sox

The New York Yankees seek to build upon a five-game win streak with a victory over the Boston Red Sox

Starting Thursday The Red Sox will recall Tolle from Triple-A Worcester to start Thursday's game against the Yankees, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Impact It seemed like Tolle would be the choice to fill in for the injured Sonny Gray (hamstring) when the former had his start skipped at Worcester over the weekend, and the decision has now been confirmed. Tolle made seven appearances (three starts) in the big leagues last season but struggled to the tune of a 6.06 ERA and 1.59 WHIP across 16.1 innings. He seems to have bounced back nicely in Triple-A this year, logging a 3.00 ERA and 1.07 WHIP through 15 frames, so he'll get another chance to show what he can do in The Show. If he performs well, he'll likely remain with the Red Sox until Gray returns from the IL.

Impact As it turned out, the Red Sox didn't need to summon Tolle during the team's four-game set against the Tigers; however, Tolle could be called up at some point this week. Monday's starter, Sonny Gray, was removed after 2.2 inning due to a hamstring injury that will eventually land him on the 15-day injured list. Tolle is the logical candidate to replace Gray, who's next turn of the rotation is due Saturday. Tolle, who last pitched for the WooSox on April 12, could be on a 12-day layoff if he's called up to start Saturday.

Impact Tolle breezed through his third start of the season and broke three Columbus bats in posting a second consecutive win. He was rocked in first start for the WooSox but has shined since. After giving up six runs (four earned) over four innings in his season debut, the left-hander has allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out 13 over 11 innings in two subsequent outings. Boston's rotation, which had a rough first 10 games to start the season, just completed an encouraging turn, so it doesn't look like Tolle will be heading east to Boston in the short term.

Impact Tolle is one of the organization's top prospects and made his MLB debut last year, but he's not likely to secure a place in the Opening Day rotation given how well the Red Sox improved their rotation during the offseason. The improved rotation depth serves an additional purpose for Boston, as it should allow the organization to secure an additional year of service time for Tolle, as long as he spends at least 46 days in the minors this season.

Impact Tolle relied heavily on his four-seamer to kick off the Grapefruit League season for Boston, but he also mixed in secondary offerings, which is the team's goal for the left-hander. He also tossed sinkers, curves, changeups, cutters and one slider among his 20 offerings (13 strikes). The one run allowed was a Royce Lewis home run off his fastball, after he couldn't put Lewis away with a changeup. Other than that, it was a fine outing for the 23-year-old, who began the competition for the final spot in the rotation that also features Johan Oviedo, Connelly Early and two veterans that didn't throw a pitch in 2025, Kutter Crawford (wrist) and Patrick Sandoval.
