Impact Sewald broke out in his age-31 season last year, striking out 39.4 percent of opposing batters while posting a 3.06 ERA. Seattle's closer committee, a setup they intend to stick with this season, meant he only picked up 11 saves despite that dominance, which lessened the amount of money he would have received in arbitration.

Impact Sewald was one of the top breakout relief pitchers of 2021, using the change in his fastball angle to explode his strikeout rate. He certainly possessed closer skills last season with a 39.4% strikeout rate and a 30.3% K-BB%. But his ability to go longer in outings can work against him, as it could encourage Servais to turn to Sewald earlier in the game and get 4-to-5 critical outs, as he did five times in September last year.

Impact Sewald was brought in for the eighth inning with Seattle protecting a three-run lead and surrendered two walks before permitting a Jared Walsh homer to tie the game and blow the save. Seattle rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead and put the 31-year-old in line for the win. The earned runs give Sewald only four in his last 12.2 innings, and he's struck out multiple batters in three of his last five outings.

Impact Sewald entered the ninth inning with a one-run lead. He intentionally walked two batters and gave up a double to load the bases with one out. However, he had a crucial strikeout against Jack Mayfield and managed to get out of the inning to secure his save and the win. This was Sewald's second save in back-to-back games, and he and Drew Steckenrider both have four saves each in September. The former is 11-for-15 in save opportunities this season.

Earns four-out save Sewald tossed a four-out save Wednesday in a 1-0 win over the Astros. He allowed two hits and had three strikeouts and zero walks.

Impact Sewald relieved Drew Steckenrider with two on and two out in the eighth and struck out Carlos Correa to escape the inning. Sewald gave up two one-out singles in the ninth but finished with a flyout and a strikeout to earn his eighth save of the year and his fourth since Aug. 17. He and Steckenrider have alternated picking up the last four saves for the Mariners, and the ninth-inning scenario could become even more cloudy with Diego Castillo (shoulder) set to return over the weekend. Regardless, Sewald has been fantastic this season, pitching to a 2.45 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 79:13 K:BB over 47.2 innings.
