The Marlins will start Paul Campbell on Saturday while the Nationals are expected to counter with Patrick Corbin

Awarded first career start
Campbell is slated to start Saturday's game against the Nationals in Washington, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact
Campbell was initially scheduled to make his first big-league start last weekend in San Francisco, but poor weather leading up to opening pitch prompted the Marlins to instead deploy him as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen. The Rule 5 pick fanned five hitters over three innings of long relief, but he served up three runs on four hits and two walks to take the loss. Campbell will now get the chance to fill a traditional starting role, with his workload likely to be capped around four or five innings, depending on how efficiently he pitches. The 25-year-old may not be in line for any additional starts beyond this weekend with Elieser Hernandez (biceps) nearing a return from the injured list.

Surrenders three runs in loss
Campbell (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over three innings in a loss to the Giants on Sunday.
Impact
Campbell was brought in to begin the second inning after the Marlins decided to deploy Ross Detwiler as an opener for Sunday's game. The 25-year-old surrendered all three of his runs in the second before settling down in the third and fourth frames. The Clemson product has not had an ideal start to his major league career, as he's let up seven runs over 7.2 innings to go along with an abysmal 2.09 WHIP. It's unclear if the Marlins plan to move forward with piggybacking him after Detwiler or if they plan to return him to a traditional reliever's role.

Won't start Sunday's game
Updating a previous report, Campbell is expected to work in relief during Sunday's game against the Giants, while Ross Detwiler draws the start, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Heral...
Impact
According to McPherson, Miami still wants Campbell to cover the bulk of the innings Sunday, but the team elected to scratch him from the start since weather issues are expected in San Francisco around opening pitch at 4:05 p.m. ET. Rather than having Campbell get warmed up following a potential delay, the Marlins plan to have Detwiler or another reliever cover the early innings before the weather situation improves. Campbell has made three appearances out of the Miami bullpen to date, giving up six runs (four earned) over 4.2 innings.

Impact
Campbell will make his first career major-league start, though he has made three appearances out of the bullpen for Miami this season. He's had limited success, but the team is hoping he can work four to five innings.

Rotation option
Campbell is a candidate to start Thursday in New York, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The Marlins snagged Campbell in the Rule 5 draft this past winter and he made the roster out of camp. He gave up three runs in two innings in his only appearance this year. Nick Neidert is the other option to start Thursday.

Wins roster spot
The Marlins informed Campbell on Monday that he will be included on the Opening Day roster, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
Impact
A Rule 5 pickup this past winter, Campbell will stick with the Marlins after submitting a 3.86 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over seven innings out of the bullpen in Grapefruit League play. The 25-year-old had been developed as a starter while rising up through the Rays' system, but Miami will likely deploy him as a low-leverage long reliever to begin 2021.

Back in camp
Campbell returned to camp Saturday after missing time to deal with a personal issue, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
Impact
It's not clear exactly where Campbell stands in his preseason preparation. He wouldn't necessarily be favored to break camp in the big-league bullpen under ordinary circumstances, as he's yet to pitch above Double-A, but the Marlins would have to offer his services back to the Rays if he were to fail to win a job, as he was a Rule 5 selection back in December.

Dealing with personal issue
Marlins general manager Kim Ng said Wednesday that Campbell has been dealing with a personal issue, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact
Campbell has yet to make an appearance in a spring game this year, and he's apparently been unavailable due to a personal matter. It's not yet clear when the right-hander could return or whether his absence could impact his availability for Opening Day.
