Brent Rooker, Osvaldo Bido help A's beat Blue Jays Brent Rooker hit a home run, Osvaldo Bido allowed two hits in six innings and the visiting Oakland Athletics defeated the Toronto Blue Jays...
AUGUST 10, 2024 • THESTATE.COM
Stuck with loss Sunday Bido (2-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Dodgers.
Impact Bido earned his first quality start with his longest outing of the year, but he wasn't able to avoid his second loss in a row. The right-hander avoided giving up a home run in a third straight start, but he's posted a 12:7 K:BB over his last 9.2 innings, and it will be tough for him to find steady success if his walk rate remains high. For the year, he's at a 4.64 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 34:18 K:BB over 33 innings across 10 appearances (four starts). He's tentatively projected to make his next start at Toronto.
AUGUST 5, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Hit hard in Sunday's start Bido (2-2) took the loss against the Angels on Sunday, allowing seven earned runs on six hits, four walks and a hit batsman over 3.2 innings. He struck out six.
Impact Bido's swing-and-miss numbers weren't bad, but he otherwise had a rough go of it against what had been a light-hitting Angels squad. He actually cruised through his first two frames, but his unraveling began in a third inning during which the Angels sliced a 6-0 deficit in half via a Luis Rengifo RBI groundout and Willie Calhoun two-run single. Bido then issued three walks and a go-ahead grand slam to Taylor Ward in the fourth, putting the right-hander on the hook for the eventual loss. The 28-year-old saw his ERA shoot up from 3.09 to 5.00 with the rocky outing, but Bido is likely to remain in the rotation for the time being and projects to draw an unenviable matchup in the Dodgers for his next start this coming weekend.
JULY 29, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Stays in rotation Bido is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Angels in Anaheim.
Impact Bido appeared to be in line for just a spot start when he was called upon Tuesday to take the hill against the Astros. However, after striking out six while allowing just one run over five innings en route to picking up a win, Bido will get at least one more opportunity to stake a claim to a more permanent spot in the Oakland rotation. The Athletics cleared up their logjam in the rotation by optioning Hogan Harris to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday and by shifting Joey Estes to the bullpen earlier this weekend.
JULY 28, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Pitches five strong innings Bido (2-1) got the win over the Astros on Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six over five innings.
Impact Bido made his second start of the season and his first since May 8 when he debuted this year and made easy work of a tough Astros lineup. His lone mistake was serving up a solo home run to Victor Caratini in the third. Bido struggled with his control early on in the year, evidenced by his 11 walks over his first 14.1 innings pitched this season. However, he's turned things around by issuing zero free passes over his last nine innings. Bido's five innings and six strikeouts also matched a season high. The 28-year-old owns a 3.09 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 22:11 K:BB in 23.1 innings and could end up permanently slotting into the Athletics' fifth rotation spot with Luis Medina being diagnosed with a right elbow sprain. Should Bido get another start, it would come this weekend against the Angels.
JULY 24, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Slated to start Tuesday The Athletics list Bido as their starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Astros in Oakland.
Impact Bido made a spot start with the Athletics in May and nine starts at Triple-A Las Vegas earlier this season, but he's worked exclusively out of the bullpen since getting called up to Oakland on June 21. After tossing a scoreless inning in Friday's 13-3 win over the Angels, Bido will be taking the hill Tuesday on three days' rest, though he needed just eight pitches to retire the side in the relief outing. Bido likely won't be asked to handle a typical starter's workload Tuesday, but he should be capable of giving the Athletics four or five innings if he's able to work efficiently.
JULY 21, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Dazzles for first victory Bido (1-1) got the win over the Phillies on Friday, firing three scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and recorded two strikeouts.
Impact Bido once again helped bail out the Athletics after a ragged performance by a starting pitcher, working the fourth, fifth and sixth innings in nearly impeccable fashion after Hogan Harris significantly struggled with his control. Three of Bido's five appearances since returning to the big-league club June 21 have been of the multi-inning variety, and he's mustered a 1.42 ERA without allowing a home run during the 12.2 innings in that span.
JULY 13, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Returns to action at Triple-A Bido (finger) started Saturday for Triple-A Las Vegas in the club's 11-3 loss to El Paso, covering four innings and striking out three while allowing four earned runs on five hits...
Impact After being called up from Las Vegas on May 8, Bido started the second game of the Athletics' doubleheader with the Rangers that day but exited midway through the third inning after developing a blister on his pitching hand. He was returned to Las Vegas two days later, but he didn't start last week while he was given more time to heal up from the finger issue. Ostensibly healthy again, Bido should continue to make regular turns out of the Las Vegas rotation but will be near the top of the list for a call-up if the Athletics should require a spot starter again.
MAY 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Sent back to Triple-A The Athletics optioned Bido to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday.
Impact Bido served as the Athletics' 27th man in last Wednesday's doubleheader with the Rangers. He started the second game of the twin bill and was dealt the loss after giving up four earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four across 2.2 innings in a 12-11 Rangers victory. Bido dealt with a blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand, so it's unclear if he'll be ready to start when his next turn through Las Vegas' rotation comes up.

Pitcher Osvaldo Bido gets $750,000 deal from Oakland A's after Pittsburgh Pirates let him go

Right-hander Osvaldo Bido agreed to a one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics after he was let go by the Pittsburgh Pirates
NOVEMBER 21, 2023 • Associated Press
Strikes deal with Oakland Bido agreed to a major-league deal with the Athletics on Monday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Impact After being non-tendered by Pittsburgh on Friday, Bido quickly recaptured a 40-man roster spot with another organization in rebuilding mode. The 28-year-old right-hander reached the majors for the first time in 2023, going 2-5 with a 5.86 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 48:21 K:BB over 50.2 innings spanning 16 appearances (nine starts) with the Pirates. Bido has two minor-league options remaining, so if he falls short in his bid for an Opening Day roster spot with the Athletics, he'll provide rotation depth at the Triple-A level.
NOVEMBER 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Pirates sign Ryan Borucki to 2024 contract, non-tender Osvaldo Bido and Hunter Stratton The Pirates avoided arbitration with Ryan Borucki and non-tendered Hunter Stratton and Osvaldo Bido on Friday night.
NOVEMBER 18, 2023 • POST-GAZETTE.COM
Draws start Friday Bido is set to start Friday's game against the Marlins at PNC Park, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Bido will be making his ninth start of the season for Pittsburgh, but he may not be asked to work as deep into Friday's outing as he has for most of those other eight starts. Before being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis last Sunday, Bido hadn't recorded more than four outs in any of his seven appearances for the affiliate in September. The Pirates don't have an obvious candidate to work in bulk relief behind Bido and may treat Friday's contest as more of a bullpen day.
SEPTEMBER 29, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Back in big leagues Bido was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.
Impact The right-hander has a 6.36 ERA across 46.2 big-league innings this season, and he'll rejoin the big club with Bailey Falter (neck) headed to the injured list. Bido has started in eight of his 14 MLB outings this year, though it's unclear if he'll step into the rotation for Falter.
SEPTEMBER 24, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Sent back to Triple-A Pittsburgh optioned Bido to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
Impact Bido was lit up for eight earned runs over 2.1 innings of relief Saturday against the Cubs. Cody Bolton will join the Pirates as a fresh bullpen arm ahead of Sunday's series finale.
AUGUST 27, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Awful in bulk role Bido (2-5) allowed eight runs on five hits and five walks while striking out one over 2.1 innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Cubs.
Impact Bido had his worst outing of the year Saturday, allowing the Cubs to generate rallies in the third and fifth innings. The five walks and eight runs were both season highs, though he was able to keep the ball in the yard. The right-hander is now at a 6.36 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 44:20 K:BB through 46.2 innings over 14 appearances (eight starts) this season. Bido is tentatively lined up for a more favorable road outing in St. Louis his next time out, though it's unclear how long the Pirates will tolerate his poor performance.
AUGUST 27, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Set for bulk-relief role Bido is expected to serve as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher Colin Selby in Saturday's game against the Cubs, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Selby hasn't covered more than two innings in any of his appearances in the majors or minors this season, so he's unlikely to work more than once through the Cubs' batting order before bowing out of the contest. Bido, who hasn't pitched since last Sunday, should be well rested and ready to cover multiple frames out of the bullpen once Selby exits. Over seven outings since the All-Star break spanning 20 innings, Bido has gone 1-3 with a 5.85 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 21:5 K:BB.
AUGUST 26, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Strikes out six in loss Bido (2-4) took the loss Sunday against the Twins. He allowed two runs on four hits and zero walks while striking out six over 3.1 innings.
Impact Bido threw 69 pitches in bulk-relief work behind opener Ryan Borucki and despite the two runs allowed pitched effectively with six strikeouts and no walks. Bido has previously started eight games for the Pirates, but this was his second extended relief outing. It remains to be seen whether he'll officially rejoin the rotation or continue to work extended innings in relief.
AUGUST 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Slated for bulk-relief role Bido is expected to serve as a bulk reliever behind opener Ryan Borucki in Sunday's game against the Twins, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Borucki is pitching in front of Bido for the second time this season, as the former previously covered 1.2 scoreless frames as an opener July 22 versus the Angels, with Bido tossing three scoreless innings behind him. Since Borucki hasn't covered more than two innings in any appearance this season, he's unlikely to work more than once through the batting order before turning the contest over to Bido, who will be the Pirates pitcher most likely to factor into any decision. Look for Bido to cover around 3-to-5 innings Sunday.
AUGUST 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Rejoining rotation Sunday Bido is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Twins in Minnesota, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact After being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis this past weekend, Bido had been serving in a relief role for the Pirates, making one- and three-inning appearances Sunday versus the Reds and Monday versus the Mets, respectively. Prior to his brief demotion to the minors, Bido had been serving as a part-time starter for the Pirates, so he should be stretched out enough to provide Pittsburgh with a decent amount of length as he steps back into the rotation this weekend. Through 41 innings in the big leagues this season, Bido owns a 5.05 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 37:15 K:BB.
AUGUST 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled from Indianapolis The Pirates recalled Bido from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday.
Impact With Carmen Mlodzinski (elbow) headed for the injured list, Bido will come up from Triple-A to fill the open bullpen spot. Bido holds a 5.35 ERA and 1.46 WHIP through 37 innings in the majors this season and is expected to relieve Andre Jackson out of the bullpen Saturday against the Reds.
AUGUST 12, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A The Pirates optioned Bido to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
Impact Bido was charged with four runs (three earned) over four innings against Atlanta on Monday, leaving him with a 7.11 ERA since the All-Star break. It's uncertain who will replace Bido in the Pittsburgh rotation, but the Pirates may be ready to give Luis Ortiz another look.
AUGUST 8, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Yields four runs Bido allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits over four innings in Monday's win over Atlanta. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
Impact Bido was untouchable through three perfect frames but Atlanta's bats got going and plated four runs in the fourth inning. He's coughed up 10 earned runs over his last 12.2 innings, raising his season ERA from 4.44 to 5.35 in the process. The rookie hasn't thrown more than four frames in an outing since June 24. Bido is lined up to face the Reds at home this weekend.
AUGUST 8, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Allows four runs in loss Bido (2-2) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on three hits and one walk over three innings against Detroit while striking out three.
Impact After striking out Zach McKinstry to open the game, Bido served up a hanging changeup to Riley Greene in the next at-bat, which the center fielder crushed over the center field wall to put the Tigers up 1-0. The right-hander would then hold the Pirates scoreless over the next two innings before hitting a wall in the fourth, walking Kerry Carpenter to open the frame and then beaning Matt Vierling in the following at-bat. Bido was tagged for four runs in the contest for only the second time this season while it marked his first loss since June 19.
AUGUST 3, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Back in rotation Wednesday Bido is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Tigers at PNC Park, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Impact Bido made his most recent appearance out of the bullpen, serving as a primary pitcher and covering three scoreless innings behind opener Ryan Borucki in a July 22 win over the Angels. The Pirates were able to get by with a four-man rotation last week, but Bido will return to a starting role while Tuesday's series opener versus the Tigers kicks off a stretch of 16 games in as many days.
