Chatwood dominates, Cubs hit 3 HRs in 9-1 romp over Brewers

Tyler Chatwood pitched three-hit ball over six innings, Willson Contreras homered and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-1 to take two of three in their opening series

Back in lineup Sunday Hoerner is starting at second base and batting seventh in Sunday's game against the Brewers.
Impact Hoerner returns to the lineup after sitting Saturday in favor of Jason Kipnis. The Cubs have faced three straight righties to begin the season, though the right-handed Hoerner now has two starts to the one for the left-handed Kipnis. That would make it seem like Hoerner has the edge for playing time at this point and is not stuck in a true platoon.

Making Cubs debut Kipnis will bat eighth and start at second base in Saturday's game against the Brewers.
Impact Kipnis wasn't in the Opening Day lineup in favor of Nico Hoerner, who is expected to split time with Kipnis at second base this season. While the exact split remains unclear, they'll both get a start at second base while facing right-handers over the Cubs' first two games.

Hendricks goes 9; Rizzo HRs, sanitizes; Cubs beat Brew 3-0

Kyle Hendricks finished a three-hitter after new manager David Ross gave him one more batter, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 3-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on opening day

Homers out of nine hole Happ went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's 3-0 win over the Brewers.
Impact Happ homered in his first at-bat, just as he did back on Opening Day 2018. This time he was down in the No. 9 spot in the order behind Nico Hoerner, but it's encouraging that he was in the lineup in center field right away with Kyle Schwarber in left and Victor Caratini at DH.

Not starting in opener Kipnis will be on the bench for Friday's Opening Day game against the Brewers.
Impact Kipnis and Nico Hoerner were expected to split time at second base this season, but it's potentially significant that it's the right-handed Hoerner who gets the nod Friday even with a righty (Brandon Woodruff) on the mound for the opposition. The exact split between the pair may not become clear until a few more games have been played.
JULY 24, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Starting on Opening Day Hoerner will bat eighth and play second base in Friday's season opener against the Brewers.
Impact Hoerner is the second baseman of the future for the Cubs, and it appears that future begins now. He was pressed into duty earlier than expected last year due to a September injury crisis and held his own, hitting .282/.305/.436 with three homers in 20 games. It's perhaps significant that he'll be starting over the left-handed Jason Kipnis even with righty Brandon Woodruff on the mound for Milwaukee, as the pair was expected to platoon, though it may take a few games until the playing-time split at the keystone becomes clear.

Shut down with ankle sprain The Cubs placed Descalso on the 45-day injured list Wednesday with a left ankle sprain, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.
Impact No reports surfaced in summer camp suggesting that Descalso was tending to a major injury, but the utility man will now be on the shelf for at least the next month and half while he recovers from the ankle sprain. His absence likely paved the way for both Jason Kipnis and Nico Hoerner to crack the Opening Day roster.

Option in center Chicago manager David Ross said Hoerner could be an option to play in center field this season if a need arises, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Impact Albert Almora, Ian Happ and Jason Heyward are the most likely candidates for playing time in center, but Ross acknowledged that the team will need "to be prepared for anything this season." Hoerner saw a little action in center with Double-A Tennessee last season, though he did primarily play in the infield both for the Smokies and the Cubs. He's expected to split second base duties with Jason Kipnis in Chicago this season.

Will be a primary option at second Chicago manager David Ross confirmed that Hoerner and Jason Kipnis will be the team's primary options at second base this year, with David Bote serving in a utility role, Jordan Ba...
Impact No real surprise here, as the righty Hoerner and the lefty Kipnis complement each other well in a platoon, and Bote has the versatility to work at second while also spelling Kris Bryant at third. While Kipnis appears to have the strong side of this platoon, the younger Hoerner could take the job and run with it if he performs well to start the season. He slashed .282/.305/.436 in a 20-game stint in the majors last year.

Getting some time at short Hoerner has been working out some at shortstop, though he's still likely to see most of his playing time at second base this season, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Impact Hoerner figures to split time with Jason Kipnis and possibly David Bote at second, but the former also stands to operate as Javier Baez's primary backup at short. Chicago manager David Ross said Hoerner "looks great defensively" at both positions, and this gives the 23-year-old another path to regular playing time if anything were to happen to Baez this season.
