Placed on 60-day injured list Anderson (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Friday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact The move was an expected one, as it was previously reported that Anderson's partially torn elbow ligament would keep him out past the midpoint of the season. It clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the Rays to add Andrew Kittredge.

Anderson confident Rays bullpen can thrive while he's out

Tampa Bay relievers Nick Anderson will miss at least half the season with an elbow injury that’s not expected to require surgery
MARCH 26, 2021 • Associated Press
Trying non-surgical options Anderson expects to try a platelet-rich plasma injection or stem cell treatment to address his partially torn elbow ligament, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Anderson's elbow woes are expected to keep him out until after the All-Star break. He's not planning on undergoing surgery at this point, though the aforementioned treatments don't have a 100 percent success rate, so he may be forced to change his plans eventually. Diego Castillo and Pete Fairbanks look like the top ninth-inning options in his absence, though the Rays are famously creative with their pitchers' roles, so it's always possible someone else enters the picture.

Out past All-Star break Anderson (elbow) has a partial tear of his elbow ligament and is likely to be out past the All-Star break, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Anderson has been battling an elbow issue since March 17 and showed decreased velocity in his latest spring training appearance. Surgery has not recommended, leaving open the possibility that he could return at some point late in the season. The injury removes Anderson from the Rays' closer picture, leaving Diego Castillo and Pete Fairbanks as the most likely pitchers to account for saves.
MARCH 26, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Elbow issues surface Anderson began dealing with right elbow tightness last week and was throwing about 90-91 mph Wednesday against the Twins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact The elbow issue apparently first surfaced March 17 and led the 30-year-old to take a few days off. He returned to game action Wednesday throwing about four ticks below his usual fastball velocity. Anderson wasn't throwing at max effort, but manager Kevin Cash still admitted "there's a level of concern." The team plans to see how the right-hander looks Thursday, and he could undergo further evaluation if the elbow remains an issue.
MARCH 25, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Already in regular-season form Anderson has been credited with a hold in each of his first two Grapefruit League appearances, firing two clean frames during which he's recorded two strikeouts.
Impact It's a very small sample, but Anderson has put on a pretty convincing impression of the late-inning dominator he was throughout the regular season last year before running out of gas in the postseason. The 30-year-old pitched to a career-best 0.55 ERA and 0.49 WHIP across 19 appearances in 2020, displaying his versatility by garnering six holds and saves apiece. Anderson is likely to see some save opportunities again in 2021, as manager Kevin Cash could well deploy a bit of a closer-by-committee approach now that Jose Alvarado is no longer on the roster.

Now in Chisox 'pen, Kopech makes debut after 2020 opt-out

Alters offseason training Anderson spent most of the offseason in St. Petersburg instead of his native Minneapolis to work out at a new facility with the goal of enhancing mobility and strength, Adam Berry...
Impact The right-hander took his normal amount of time off after the Rays' postseason ended, which means he's a bit behind what is his typical spring schedule. Nevertheless, Anderson has already thrown one bullpen session and is set for another in the coming days as he begins gearing up for the new campaign. After a dominant regular season during which he posted a career-best 0.55 ERA and 0.49 WHIP across 19 appearances, Anderson clearly struggled with fatigue in the postseason while giving up at least one earned run in each of his last seven October appearances.
