Stumbles in season debut
Eovaldi (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Phillies, allowing five runs on eight hits and no walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out seven.
Impact
It wasn't Eovaldi's finest performance versus a formidable Phillies lineup, as he yielded three extra-base hits (two home runs). Additionally, the veteran right-hander matched his season-worst marks in runs and hits from a year ago. Eovaldi, who was able to throw 80 pitches in his season debut, will be trying to right the ship and further up his pitch count in Baltimore against the Orioles for his second scheduled start of the season next week.

Efficient final tuneup
Eovaldi allowed four hits and one walk and did not record a strikeout over four scoreless innings in Friday's spring start against San Francisco.
Impact
Eovaldi was efficient in his final Cactus League start before taking the ball Opening Day next Thursday. He threw just 36 pitches (27 strikes), which can happen when a team is as aggressive as the Giants were Friday. There should be no worries about length; Eovaldi threw 81 pitches and 5.2 innings in his previous spring start.

Named Opening Day starter
The Rangers announced Sunday that Eovaldi will start Opening Day against the Phillies on March 26.
Impact
The veteran right-hander is getting his third straight Opening Day nod for the Rangers, though he may more realistically be considered the club's No. 2 pitcher behind Jacob deGrom. Eovaldi was limited to 22 starts last season due to shoulder issues, but he was dominant when available with a 1.73 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 129:21 K:BB across 130 innings.

Works into third inning
Eovaldi allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four over 2.2 innings in Wednesday's spring start against the Guardians.
Impact
Eovaldi upped his pitch count to 43 (29 strikes) and had three up-and-downs in his second Cactus League start. The right-hander was much better Wednesday than in his spring debut last week when he allowed a pair of home runs and three runs overall in two innings.

Reports to camp in full health
Eovaldi (hernia) reported to camp healthy and threw his first bullpen session Tuesday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Eovaldi underwent surgery during the offseason to address a sports hernia issue. The right-hander said he's been dealing with the hernia since 2024, but that it never affected his pitching. Eovaldi was shutdown last season in August with an impressive 1.73 ERA over 22 starts, the fourth consecutive season with fewer than 30 starts. He turns 36 this spring, and manager Skip Schumaker is planning a slow build-up for Eovaldi, similar to how the club handled Jacob deGrom in 2025.

Undergoes sports hernia surgery
Eovaldi underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a sports hernia, Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports reports.
Impact
The typical recovery timeline for the procedure is 6-to-8 weeks, which will allow Eovaldi to begin his offseason throwing program when he normally would. He is expected to be fully recovered from the hernia surgery and also his late-season rotation cuff strain in time for the start of spring training. Eovaldi held a 1.73 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 129:21 K:BB across 130 innings for the Rangers in 2025.

Might require sports hernia surgery
Rangers general manager Ross Fenstermaker said Friday that Eovaldi (shoulder) will visit a physician in Phoenix next week to determine whether he will require sports hernia surgery...
Impact
Eovaldi's season ended in late August when he was diagnosed with a right rotator cuff strain. However, Fenstermaker noted that Eovaldi's shoulder injury is not expected to impact his offseason throwing program. The bigger concern now appears to be Eovadi's groin area, though more will be known about his status moving forward following next week's exam. Eovaldi had a fabulous 2025 campaign, posting a 1.73 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 129:21 K:BB across 130 innings. He's under contract with the Rangers through 2027.
