Rangers Best Starting Pitcher Was Most Unexpected Surprise of 2026 The Texas Rangers entered the 2026 season with a respected 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation in Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi.

Impact Eovaldi made his first start since returning from the injured list in mid-September, ending the season on a positive note. The veteran right-hander has one more year left on his deal with the Rangers, and he figures to rejoin the rotation in 2027 following a disappointing campaign. After recording a career-best 1.73 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in 2025, Eovaldi worked to a 4.20 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 144:35 K:BB over 145.2 innings in 2026.

The 36-year-old has made four appearances as a reliever since returning from an elbow injury Sept. 12, during which he's coughed up five earned runs in 8.2 innings while striking out four batters and walking one. He never threw more than 46 pitches in any of those outings, so although he'll be capable of handling multiple innings Saturday, he may struggle to pitch deep enough into the game to record a win.

Blows lead, takes loss Tuesday Eovaldi (11-10) took the loss and was charged with his first blown save after allowing three runs on three hits and a walk over one inning in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Mets.

Impact Eovaldi entered to begin the sixth with Texas protecting a 3-2 lead but couldn't hold the advantage. Brett Baty doubled and Marcus Semien reached before Francisco Alvarez delivered a two-run double to put New York ahead 4-3. Luis Torrens followed with a sacrifice fly that brought Alvarez home and completed the three-run inning. Eovaldi needed 29 pitches to record three outs, and this rough appearance increased his ERA to 4.27. This was the first time Eovaldi allowed more than one earned run since the end of July, and he should continue to pitch in relief down the stretch.

He threw approximately 40 pitches in the bullpen over two sets Saturday and is poised to take another step forward early this week, when he throws off a mound against live hitters. If all goes well during the live session, Eovaldi could then come back from the IL and slot into the bullpen, though it's possible the Rangers send him out on a brief rehab assignment beforehand. Regardless, Eovaldi looks like he'll need some time to get fully stretched back out, and though the veteran right-hander could prove to be a useful piece for the Rangers out of the bullpen, that sort of role won't lend itself to much fantasy value while Jacob Latz is secure as the team's closer.
