Released by Pirates Clevinger was released by the Pirates on Thursday, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Impact After turning in a 4.74 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 24.2 innings at Triple-A Indianapolis, Clevinger elected to activate his release clause and will now seek out another opportunity in the open market. The 35-year-old has made just 12 appearances in the big leagues since 2024 and is unlikely to attract more than a minor-league deal at this stage in his career.

Impact Clevinger landed on the injured list April 13 due to a right MCL sprain. He's since completed a rehab stint in the Florida Complex League, and it didn't take long to find his way into a game at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he allowed one hit and struck out two across a scoreless frame Sunday against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Impact Clevinger will be immobilized for several weeks before resuming workouts. The veteran right-hander has been pitching out of the bullpen at Triple-A Indianapolis, allowing five runs with a 9:5 K:BB across 8.2 innings. He won't be an option for the Pirates until sometime in June, at the earliest.

Headed to Triple-A The Pirates reassigned Clevinger to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Impact He was in camp as a non-roster invitee and logged a 5.02 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 15:10 K:BB in 14.1 innings this spring. Jose Urquidy beat out Clevinger for the final long-relief spot in the Pirates' Opening Day bullpen.

Making push for roster spot Clevinger threw 3.0 scoreless innings while allowing one hit to go along with three strikeouts and two walks in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays.

Impact Clevinger joined the Pirates in February on a non-roster deal, but he appears to have a legitimate chance to make the roster as either the fifth starter or a long reliever. He reports being fully healthy, per Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and touched 97 mph in his first spring outing Feb. 25. Adding in Monday's outing, Clevinger has thrown five scoreless innings, though he's managed only a 4:4 K:BB.

Gets NRI from Pittsburgh The Pirates signed Clevinger to a minor-league contract Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Impact Clevinger opened 2025 in the bullpen with the White Sox, but he was battered for five runs with a 3:8 K:BB in 5.2 innings before returning to a rotation role at Triple-A Charlotte and remaining there for the rest of the season. The Pirates will likely keep the 35-year-old at Triple-A Indianapolis as rotation depth.

Enters open market Clevinger elected free agency Friday, Jack Ankony of SI.com reports.

Impact The White Sox attempted to use Clevinger out of the bullpen to begin the season -- an experiment that resulted in the 34-year-old allowing five earned runs in just 5.2 innings before being DFA'd in April. He spent the rest of the season in the rotation at Triple-A Charlotte, turning in a 4.20 ERA and 1.34 WHIP across 100.2 frames. He will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal in the offseason in order to land his next gig.

Moving back to rotation Clevinger will stretch out at the White Sox's complex in Arizona before returning to Triple-A Charlotte as a starter, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Impact Clevinger made eight appearances out of the bullpen for the White Sox, giving up five earned runs in 5.2 innings while turning in a 3:8 K:BB. He was designated for assignment following his poor start and will now attempt to convert back into a starter, which is what his role has been for the vast majority of his career. If he returns to form after reporting to Charlotte, the 34-year-old righty may have a shot at returning to Chicago later this summer.

Passes through waivers The White Sox outrighted Clevinger to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

Impact Clevinger passed through waivers unclaimed after being removed from the 40-man roster earlier this week. He has the ability to elect free agency rather than accept an outright assignment, and it's unclear whether Clevinger has made that decision.

APRIL 16, 2025 • SUNTIMES.COM

Designated for assignment The White Sox designated Clevinger for assignment Wednesday.

Impact Clevinger came into the season seemingly in line for a high-leverage role in the Chicago bullpen, perhaps even as the team's closer. However, he yielded five runs with an ugly 3:8 K:BB over 5.2 innings and had appeared to lose the trust of manager Will Venable. With Clevinger out of the picture and Fraser Ellard (hamstring) hurt, Jordan Leasure might be the best bet for saves in a shaky White Sox bullpen.

APRIL 16, 2025 • ROTOWIRE

Gives up three runs Clevinger allowed three earned runs on two hits and a walk across one inning Tuesday against the A's.

Impact Clevinger entered the game in the ninth inning with the White Sox down by six runs. The effort continued what has been an uninspiring start to the campaign, as he's now allowed at least one earned run in three of his eight appearances and has an ugly 3:8 K:BB. The White Sox have yet to record a save this season, but Clevinger appears to be the top candidate for the closer role when required.

APRIL 16, 2025 • ROTOWIRE

Command issues continue Clevinger (0-2) was stuck with the loss Tuesday against the Guardians after allowing a run on one hit and three walks in just a third of an inning.

Impact Clevinger came in to relieve Tyler Gilbert with two outs in the eighth and got to the ninth unscathed. The Guardians opened up with an infield single and Clevinger proceeded to eventually walk in the winning run after issuing three consecutive free passes. He now has walked five batters and picked up two outs in his last two appearances and likely will find himself in some lower leverage situations in the near future.
