Recalled from Double-A
Amaya was recalled Tuesday from Double-A Tennessee, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Impact
Amaya will join the Cubs ahead of Tuesday night's game against the Nationals after Yan Gomes took a backswing to the helmet Monday. A former top-ranked prospect, Amaya was sporting an impressive 1.070 OPS with four home runs through 13 games this season at the Double-A level. Gomes, though, has yet to be placed on the IL and so this could wind up being a short stay in the bigs for the 24-year-old catcher.

Healthy again at Double-A
Amaya (foot) has started at catcher in two of Double-A Tennessee's first four games, going 1-for-7 with a solo home run.
Impact
Amaya didn't make an appearance during the Cubs' Cactus League slate until March 28, but he showed enough improvement in his recovery from the Lisfranc fracture in his left foot that he suffered while playing with the Double-A club last September to avoid a stint on the injured list to open the 2023 campaign. The 23-year-old was limited to serving exclusively as a designated hitter in 2022 after he returned from Tommy John surgery, but he looks like he'll be able to play catcher on a full-time basis this season.

Optioned to Double-A
Amaya (foot) was optioned to Double-A Tennessee by the Cubs on Friday.
Impact
Amaya has yet to play this spring after suffering a Lisfranc fracture last September, although he's supposed to be close. Once healthy, he'll continue to hone his craft at Tennessee.

Impact
Amaya looks to be nearing the finish line in his recovery from the Lisfranc fracture he sustained to his left foot while playing at Double-A Tennessee in mid-September. The 23-year-old backstop, who had already missed the first three months of the season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, served exclusively as a designated hitter for Tennessee but was expected to be ready to handle reps behind the plate in the Arizona Fall League had the foot injury not nixed those plans. Amaya said that he felt comfortable while making throws behind the plate Saturday, and his foot presented no complications while he was hitting. Once he makes his spring debut, Amaya should be in the clear for the start of the minor-league season in early April.

Working toward return
Amaya (foot) said Thursday he has yet to be fully medically cleared, though he has resumed some baseball activities, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Impact
Amaya suffered a Lisfranc fracture in his left foot last season with Double-A Tennessee. There is no word yet on whether he'll be ready for the start of the minor-league season, but he has begun catching bullpen sessions, throwing to bases and is cleared to hit -- all good signs. The 23-year-old catching prospect slashed .278/.379/.485 in Double-A last season and will likely be bumped up to Triple-A in 2023.

Impact
Tennessee's season concluded Sept. 28, but Amaya didn't see any action for the club after Sept. 11 due to the injury. The 23-year-old had already gotten off to a delayed start to the 2022 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery last November, and he served exclusively as a designated hitter with Tennessee and the Cubs' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate once he was cleared for game action July 1. Amaya's surgically repaired throwing elbow was expected to be fully healed in time for him to catch in games during the Arizona Fall League, but the foot injury will end up costing him some valuable reps. Amaya, who was recently tendered a contract for the 2023 season and will remain on the Cubs' 40-man roster, is expected to be fully cleared for spring training, but he won't be a serious candidate to win an Opening Day role with the big club.

Suffers dislocated finger
Amaya is day-to-day after suffering a dislocated ring finger on his right hand, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Amaya was activated from the minor-league injured list on July 22 after recovering from Tommy John surgery early in the season. He has served solely as the designated hitter for Double-A Tennessee since but will be sidelined for at least a brief period of time. Amaya has hit fairly well in his limited playing time, maintaining a .254/.354/.373 line across 79 plate appearances.

Activated from injured list
Amaya (elbow) was activated from the 7-day injured list at Double-A Tennessee on Friday.
Impact
Amaya missed the start of the year after undergoing Tommy John surgery, but he began a rehab assignment with the Cubs' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate at the beginning of July and slashed .216/.341/.378 with two homers, four runs and four RBI over 12 rehab games. He isn't expected to be able to catch this season but should be available to serve as the designated hitter in Tennessee.

Won't catch this season
Amaya (elbow) won't catch this season, but he may be able to DH by midsummer, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports.
Impact
He had Tommy John surgery in November, which is why he won't be catching. However, as a position player, he won't require the typical 14-to-16 months to return to game action. He should be a full go as a catcher in 2023.

Needs Tommy John surgery
Amaya (elbow) is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Amaya didn't play a game after June 3 while dealing with an injury that was originally called a forearm strain. While Tommy John surgery doesn't keep hitters out for as long as it sidelines pitchers, it's still likely to require a lengthy recovery process, which could cause him to miss a meaningful portion of the 2022 campaign.

Sidelined by injury
Amaya (undisclosed) is on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Tennessee, Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Impact
The specifics of the issue remain unclear, though the young catcher his been on the shelf since early June. Amaya was hitting .215/.406/.304 with one homer, four doubles, 13 RBI, 11 runs and two stolen bases in 23 games for the Smokies prior to the injury.

Goes deep Tuesday
Amaya went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Monday's Cactus League game against the Angels.
Impact
It was the first home run and third hit overall this spring for the 22-year-old catcher. He has plenty of upside, but he's yet to appear in a game above the High-A level, so he'll likely start the season at Double-A or Triple-A.
