Sharp in ninth win
Scherzer (9-4) picked up the win in Friday's 5-1 victory over the Nationals, allowing one run on six hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out seven.
Impact
The 39-year-old blanked Washington for six innings until Luis Garcia took him deep in the seventh, and Scherzer exited after 103 pitches, including 30 called or swinging strikes. The Mets are sellers at the trade deadline, so this could potentially have been his last start in a New York uniform, but Scherzer's $43.3 million player option for 2024 and full no-trade clause make it unlikely he'll be sent elsewhere. He's at least pitching well enough to be of interest to a contender -- he has five quality starts in his last eight outings, posting a 3.53 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 61:16 K:BB through 51 innings over that stretch.

Done in by long ball Saturday
Scherzer dropped to 8-4 on the season in Saturday's 8-6 loss to the Red Sox after surrendering five earned runs on six hits and two walks in six innings while striking out seven.
Impact
Scherzer has been a flyball pitcher throughout his career, and while he's mostly done well to offset damage to his ratios by striking out batters at a prolific clip, his command seems to have betrayed him in his age-38 season. He was stung hard by the long ball Saturday, with the Red Sox taking him deep a season-high four times before he was lifted after 93 pitches. Scherzer has now served up 15 home runs over his last nine starts and owns a 1.97 HR/9 for the season, almost double his career-long rate (1.04). Scherzer is likely due for a turnaround in his home-run rate to some degree, but skills degradation may at least partially explain some of his ongoing struggles. Per Statcast, opposing hitters have posted a 10.3 percent barrel rate, 89.1 mile-per-hour average exit velocity and 38.7 percent hard-hit rate against Scherzer this season. All of those figures are the worst of Scherzer's career since the beginning of the Statcast era in 2015.

Allows just one hit in no-decision
Scherzer allowed just one hit and three walks while striking out six over seven scoreless innings Sunday against the Dodgers. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact
Scherzer was given a 1-0 lead in the fifth that was eventually blown by Trevor Gott in the eighth to spoil the chance for a win. The 38-year-old put together one of his most dominant starts of the season and managed to not give up a home run for the first time since June 1. After giving up nine runs in his past 11 innings, Sunday's outing was a very encouraging performance from Scherzer, who now owns a 3.99 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 107:26 K:BB in 94.2 innings. He's set up to face Boston on the road over the coming week.

Likely to pitch through neck issue
Scherzer is dealing with neck stiffness but is currently penciled in for Sunday's start against the Dodgers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact
It was reported earlier in the day that Scherzer could get pushed to Tuesday, but it sounds like he should still be able to pitch this weekend barring the issue getting worse in the next day or two. General manager Billy Eppler said Scherzer got the neck issue due to sleeping the wrong way and it is likely not related to the spasms that affected him earlier this year.

Nursing minor injury
Scherzer's next start could be pushed back to Tuesday versus the White Sox due to an injury not related to his right arm, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Impact
Scherzer is lined up to start Sunday against the Dodgers and the Mets still tentatively believe he'll be ready to take the ball that day. However, it's possible they'll opt to give Scherzer a couple extra days to be safe. A decision is expected later Friday. Mets manager Buck Showalter didn't want to divulge any details about Scherzer's injury beyond that it's not related to his pitching arm.

Tagged with five runs
Scherzer (8-3) allowed five runs on six hits and three walks over five innings Sunday, striking out seven and taking a loss against the Padres.
Impact
All five runs against Scherzer came via the long ball, with Manny Machado providing both home runs. Scherzer has now been taken deep 11 times over his last seven starts, resulting in a 5.63 ERA during that stretch. Despite some recent shakiness, Sunday's loss was his first since May 3 and snapped his streak of six consecutive wins. Scherzer saw his season ERA rise to 4.31 with a 101:23 K:BB through 16 outings.

Impact
The 38-year-old wasn't at his sharpest, serving up at least one long ball for the sixth straight start, but Scherzer gave the Mets at least six frames for the fourth straight outings and stuck around long enough to see Francisco Alvarez crush a go-ahead homer of his own in the top of the seventh. Scherzer hasn't lost a game since early May, posting a 3.45 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 74:10 K:BB over his last 60 innings, and he figures to make one more trip to the mound before the All-Star break, on the road against the Padres.

Fans nine in no-decision
Scherzer allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out nine batters over six innings in a no-decision against Milwaukee on Thursday.
Impact
Scherzer maneuvered through five scoreless frames before Victor Caratini tagged him for a two-run homer in the sixth. The long ball tied the score and kept Scherzer from notching a third straight win, but the veteran hurler still finished with his third consecutive quality start. Since being lit up by the Yankees for six runs over 3.1 frames June 13, Scherzer has allowed just five earned runs over his subsequent 20 innings while posting a 25:4 K:BB. The strong stretch has lowered his ERA to 3.87 on the campaign, though that's still on pace to be his worst mark since 2011 when he was with the Tigers.

Fans eight in seventh win
Scherzer (7-2) picked up the win in Saturday's 4-2 victory over the Phillies, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight.
Impact
The veteran right-hander fired 70 of his 107 pitches for strikes, with 34 called or swinging strikes, en route to his second straight quality start and fifth in his last seven trips to the mound. During that stretch, Scherzer sports a 3.35 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and stellar 50:4 K:BB over 43 innings. He's won five straight decisions since a shaky beginning to his Mets tenure, a streak he'll look to continue in his next start, likely to come at home next week against the Brewers.
