INJURIES

Earns first career win Waldron (1-3) earned the win Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk over 5.1 innings against the Athletics while striking out five.
Impact Waldron allowed at least one man to reach base in all six innings in which he appeared but was mostly able to pitch his way out of trouble and keep the Padres in the game. The rookie right-hander matched his season high with five strikeouts in the contest en route to recording his first career win. He has, however, allowed at least one home run in all six of his starts this season.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2023 • MLB.COM
Draws another start Saturday Waldron is slated to start Saturday's game against the Athletics in Oakland.
Impact Waldron will make a second straight turn through the San Diego rotation after tossing five innings and allowing four runs in a losing effort in his most recent outing Sunday against the Astros. With Rich Hill having been demoted to the bullpen and placed on waivers and with both Yu Darvish (elbow) and Joe Musgrove (shoulder) looking unlikely to pitch again in 2023, Waldron should have a fair amount of job security in the rotation regardless of how he performs.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Yields four runs in loss Waldron (0-3) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over five innings Sunday, striking out one batter and taking a loss against the Astros.
Impact Waldron turned in a couple of scoreless frames before coughing up three runs in the third inning. It was tied for his longest MLB outing but also raised his ERA to 5.55 through 24.1 innings on the year. He entered the rotation for Rich Hill, who would later allow two unearned runs in three innings of relief Sunday. It's unclear if Waldron will get another look in the rotation or be moved back to a bulk reliever role.
SEPTEMBER 11, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Joining rotation Sunday Waldron is listed as the Padres' probable starting pitcher for Sunday's game in Houston.
Impact At least for one turn through the rotation, the Padres will turn to Waldron to replace Rich Hill, who could be moved to the bullpen after delivering a 10.71 ERA and 1.97 WHIP across 19.1 innings over his first six outings since joining San Diego at the trade deadline. Since being called up from Triple-A El Paso on Aug. 28, Waldron has made two extended relief appearances, working five innings on Aug. 31 and 4.2 innings this past Monday. He stretched out to 88 pitches in his most recent outing, so Waldron should be able to provide the Padres with plenty of length as he moves into the rotation Sunday.

Impact Rich Hill started for San Diego and was lit up for six runs over 1.1 frames. Waldron took over with one out in the second and ended up pitching through the end of the sixth inning. The right-hander wasn't dominant but did keep the contest from becoming a blowout after the Phillies' fast start. Waldron has worked twice in long relief since being recalled from the minors Aug. 28, totaling 9.2 frames and yielding four runs along with a 7:1 K:BB. Per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com, Waldron could be a consideration to replace the struggling veteran Hill in the rotation, though that's merely speculation at this point.

Back with Friars The Padres recalled Waldron from Triple-A El Paso on Monday.
Impact The 26-year-old right-hander will join the 26-man active roster as a replacement for Yu Darvish (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday. Darvish had been lined up to make his next turn through the rotation in Wednesday's game in St. Louis, so Waldron could be an option to make a spot start that day or serve as a bulk reliever if he's not needed out of the bullpen Monday or Tuesday. Waldron has previously made two starts with San Diego, covering 9.2 innings between them while allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and four walks.

Optioned to Triple-A Waldron was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.
Impact Waldron started the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Diamondbacks, yielding five runs over five innings of work in a spot start for the Padres. The 26-year-old returns to El Paso, where he's posted a 7.28 ERA in 2023.

Impact Making his second career start in the majors, Waldron had trouble putting Arizona batters away when it mattered and got tagged for runs in the first, third and fifth innings, with the big blow being a two-run shot from Tommy Pham in the right-hander's final frame. Waldron's usage of a knuckleball makes him a bit of a novelty in the modern game and he has yet to allow a hit on the pitch, but through his first 9.2 big-league innings he's surrendered a .923 SLG on his mediocre low-90s fastball.
AUGUST 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled for doubleheader Waldron was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to start in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader with the Diamondbacks.
Impact After a decent performance during his first major-league start in June, Waldron will be called upon for his second test Saturday. The 26-year-old knuckleballer hasn't been outstanding in the minors, however, holding a 7.28 ERA and 1.63 WHIP through 85.1 innings. He will likely be optioned back to Triple-A after Saturday's games -- especially if he starts to get hit around by major-league batters.
AUGUST 19, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to Triple-A Waldron was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.
Impact Waldron didn't get into a game after getting the call a few days ago and has pitched in one game all year for the big club, giving up two earned runs in 4.2 innings on June 24 against Washington. Robert Suarez (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.

Returns to majors The Padres recalled Waldron from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.
Impact San Diego played two Saturday and used a combined eight relievers across both games of the twin bill. Waldron will provide a fresh arm and should be able to handle multiple innings if necessary. The right-hander has worked primarily as a starter at Triple-A this season, pitching to a 7.02 ERA and 1.66 WHIP over 66.2 innings.
JULY 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to El Paso The Padres optioned Waldron to Triple-A El Paso on Friday.
Impact With the return of Steven Wilson (pectoral) from the injured list, Waldron will return to the minors to free up a spot in San Diego's bullpen. The 26-year-old knuckleballer has allowed two runs over 4.2 major-league innings, but his 7.02 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in Triple-A tell a different story about how his season has gone so far.

Recalled to bullpen San Diego recalled Waldron from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.
Impact Waldron will rejoin the Padres in a long relief role ahead of Tuesday's game against the Angels. He made a spot start last month and scattered two earned runs on four hits and one walk over 4.2 innings.

Sent down Sunday Waldron was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribunereports.
Impact The 26-year-old made his major-league debut Saturday against Washington and took the loss after he allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk over 4.2 innings. Waldron will return to the Triple-A rotation, where he has a 7.02 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 75:24 K:BB across 66.2 frames this season.

Padres Daily: There can't be a Royals redux; Waldron was just fine, which should have been fine Padres sought a sweep, now they have to win finale against Nationals to avoid what would be another horrible series loss
JUNE 25, 2023 • SANDIEGOUNIONTRIBUNE.COM
Loses debut Waldron (0-1) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over 4.2 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Nationals.
Impact Waldron held his own in his big-league debut, but two of the four hits he allowed were solo home runs to Jeimer Candelario and Lane Thomas. It's unclear if this will lead to additional starts for Waldron, who is the only knuckleballer active in the majors. He pitched to a 7.02 ERA with Triple-A El Paso. If he doesn't get another start, Waldron will likely be back in the minors in the near future.
