Waldron struggled mightily during his season debut Monday, during which he gave up four runs in 4.2 innings, and he's put up a 5.24 ERA and 1.54 WHIP through 22.1 frames in Triple-A.

Impact Waldron's season debut was absolutely disastrous as the knuckleballer issued a career-worst six free passes (his previous worst was four). Despite the avalanche of walks, the San Diego right-hander managed to limit the Phillies lineup to just one extra-base hit -- a Nick Castellanos solo homer in the fifth -- across his 104 pitches. Waldron hadn't been particularly sharp at Triple-A before his callup, pitching to a 5.04 ERA across 30.1 frames, but could stay with the big-league team as starting pitchers Ryan Bergert (forearm), Yu Darvish (elbow), Michael King (shoulder), and Joe Musgrove (elbow) are on the injured list. If Waldron continues to stick in the rotation, his next turn is scheduled to come against the Rangers at home this weekend.

While those numbers don't necessarily make the knuckleballer deserving of a promotion, the Padres were short on alternatives to fill the fifth spot in the rotation due to Ryan Bergert (forearm) recently joining Yu Darvish (elbow), Michael King (shoulder) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) on the injured list. Darvish is the closest of that quartet to returning from the IL, but since his timetable is still somewhat vague, Waldron could be needed to make multiple turns through the rotation before the All-Star break.

Impact Waldron has missed the entire 2025 campaign to this point while recovering from a left oblique strain, but he'll now officially be back in action. The right-hander made three appearances with three different levels of San Diego's minor-league system during his rehab assignment, most recently allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six over four innings with El Paso on Friday. Waldron produced a 4.91 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 133 strikeouts over 27 appearances, including 26 starts, with the Padres in 2024, and he'll likely return to the major-league roster before too long.

He could be an option to return to the big-league rotation later on in 2025 if he can find some success with El Paso.
