Impact The right-hander walked more than one batter for the first time in four starts and tossed only 58 of 94 pitches for strikes. When Weaver was over the plate though he got tagged for plenty of hard contact, as five of the six hits off him went for extra bases including a two-run shot by Austin Riley in the second inning. Weaver will carry a 4.57 ERA and 19:5 K:BB over 21.2 innings into his next outing Thursday at home against the Rockies.

Ditches fastball Weaver threw mainly fastballs and changeups during his seven dominant innings against the Reds on Sunday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact Weaver spent the spring trying to rework his curve while using more of a slider rather than a cutter, but he struggled through much of the Cactus League. Sunday's outing was the second straight in which he kept the curve on the shelf. He didn't need it or any of the breaking stuff, throwing 70 fastballs, 23 changeups and one slider. He spotted his mid-90s fastball and kept hitters off balance with the change. It's not the optimum recipe for starting pitchers to navigate around lineups three and four times per game over the course of a season, but it worked for this one day against this lineup.

Mixed results in first start Weaver tossed 5.2 innings against Colorado on Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out three. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact On the plus side, Weaver did not walk a batter and allowed only four hits. However, three of those hits left the park, leaving the right-hander with only a moderately successful outing. The fact that Weaver hung around 5.2 frames in the altitude of Colorado helps provide some optimism moving forward, though the veteran's eight homers allowed this spring suggests that the long ball may be a problem this season no matter where he pitches. Weaver will try to keep more balls in the park Sunday when he faces Cincinnati at home in his next scheduled start.
