Goes to Phillies on MiLB pact The Phillies signed Sims to a minor-league contract Tuesday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Impact Sims was released by the Nationals earlier this month after collecting an unsightly 13.86 ERA and 2.27 WHIP through 12.1 innings. The 31-year-old reliever posted a 29.9 percent strikeout rate from 2019 to 2024, so the Phillies will see if they can coax more out of Sims.

Impact The veteran right-hander entered the game with the Nationals down 4-2, but Sims was still the pitcher of record when Washington took the lead for good in the top of the eighth. Sims has seen a heavy workload so far, appearing in nine of the Nats' first 13 games, and he hasn't exactly impressed with a 7.11 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 5:5 K:BB over 6.1 innings. He's also picked up a hold in addition to Friday's win, but he seems a long way from getting regular high-leverage work.

Impact The veteran right-hander is a little behind the Nats' other relief arms after signing late, but his availability for Opening Day isn't in jeopardy. Sims is coming off a bumpy 2024 split between Boston and Cincinnati, but he posted a 3.10 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 72:39 K:BB over 61 innings for the Reds in 2023, and he figures to be in the high-leverage mix for a Washington squad with a very unsettled bullpen picture.

The 31-year-old owns a 26.9 percent strikeout rate over 306 career innings, but a similarly high walk rate (12.1 percent) has thus far prevented him from gaining a full-time look as a closer. He's notched just 12 saves over parts of eight big-league seasons.

Sims was added at the trade deadline to help a faltering bullpen, and he's done fine when not facing the Astros. In three appearances against Houston while in a Boston uniform, Sims has allowed six runs on six hits and three walks over 3.1 innings.
