Samad Taylor - On bench again Monday Taylor is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Twins.

Impact After getting his first big-league call-up July 16, Taylor proceeded to start in seven of his first 10 games with the Royals, but his opportunities have since become more limited. In the subsequent seven contests, Taylor has started in just three times, and he'll head into Monday's series opener with a .133/.270/.133 slash line through his first 38 plate appearances in the majors. Given his struggles in addition to the fact that his playing time has been trending down, Taylor could soon be headed back to Triple-A Omaha.

Salvador Perez - Taking seat Monday Perez is absent from the lineup for Monday's tilt in Minnesota.

Impact Perez started each of the last five contests after returning from a minor eye procedure, but he'll get a day off Monday. Freddy Fermin will do the catching for Austin Cox and bat sixth.

Dairon Blanco - Limited to reserve role Blanco is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Twins.

Impact With four stolen bases in five attempts in just 43 plate appearances with Kansas City since being called up from Triple-A Omaha on June 12, Blanco is making an impact with his wheels, but he's not getting enough consistent playing time to warrant much attention outside of AL-only leagues. He'll be on the bench for the sixth time in seven games Monday.

Josh Taylor - Shifts to 60-day IL The Royals transferred Taylor (back) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday.

Impact Taylor underwent surgery last week to repair a herniated disc in his lower back and is without a timeline for his return, but the move to the 60-day IL ensures he won't be available out of the Kansas City bullpen until at least late July. The southpaw reliever had struggled to an 8.15 ERA and 1.75 WHIP in 17 appearances for Kansas City prior to being placed on the shelf in late May.

Diego Hernandez - Activated, sent to High-A The Royals reinstated Hernandez (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Monday and optioned him to High-A Quad Cities.

Impact Though Hernandez began season on the Royals' IL after dislocating his shoulder in February and undergoing surgery, he wouldn't have been a serious candidate to make the Opening Day roster even if he had stayed healthy and performed well in spring training. The 22-year-old outfielder was added to the 40-man roster over the winter for the sole purpose of protecting him from the Rule 5 draft, but Hernandez is realistically at least a year or two away from reaching the big leagues. He posted a serviceable if unspectacular .736 OPS in 32 games at Double-A Northwest Arkansas at the tail end of the 2022 season, and he could eventually move up to the Royals' Texas League affiliate once he gets more at-bats in at Quad Cities. Hernandez had already appeared in eight rehab games between Quad Cities and the rookie-level Arizona Complex League prior to being activated.
