Shielded from Rule 5 Draft The Reds added Balcazar to the 40-man roster Tuesday, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.

Impact Balcazar is now protected from next month's Rule 5 Draft, but a debut during the first half of 2026 seems unlikely given his limited experience at the upper levels of the minors. The 21-year-old reached Double-A in 2025 and largely struggled, posting a .677 OPS across 51 games. The infield prospect needs more time and seasoning on the farm.

Suffers ACL tear Balcazar was placed on the 7-day injured list after tearing his right ACL, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Impact Balcazar is considered one of the better infield prospects in a Cincinnati system that is loaded with them, and he was hitting .324 with an .898 OPS over 68 at-bats before the injury. He'll likely miss the rest of the 2023 season with a chance to return to the field as a 19-year-old in 2024.
