Turns down mutual option Schwarber declined his portion of the $11.5 million mutual option with the Red Sox for 2022 on Friday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Impact Schwarber had the best OPS of his career at .928 during 2021 to go along with 32 homers and 71 RBI in 113 games, so it's hardly a surprise he's opted to return to the open market. The 28-year-old saw some time at first base after being acquired by the Red Sox at the trade deadline, and that versatility should benefit him some as a free agent. Boston has shown interest in re-signing the slugger, though he should receive significant interest on the open market.
