Returns to minors The Dodgers optioned Hurt to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Impact Hurt made an impressive showing during his MLB debut Tuesday, sitting down Fernando Tatis, Juan Soto and Manny Machado during the first of his two innings of work. However, the return of Joe Kelly (forearm) will send Hurt back to Triple-A. Hurt might still have a chance to return before the end of the season if the Dodgers need another fresh bullpen arm.

Impresses in big-league debut Hurt tossed two scoreless innings against the Padres on Tuesday, retiring all six batters he faced, including three by strikeout.

Impact The Dodgers were up 9-2 when Hurt entered in the eighth inning, so his outing can't be characterized as high-leverage. However, that doesn't diminish the right-hander's effectiveness -- threw 19 of 24 pitches for strikes overall and struck out the side in the ninth inning. His work in the eighth frame may have been even more impressive, as Hurt began his big-league career by making easy work of the heart of San Diego's lineup, including Fernando Tatis, Juan Soto and Manny Machado. The 25-year-old showed plenty of punchout prowess in fanning 145 batters over 88.1 innings in the minors this season, and he could bring a late-season boost to the Dodgers' bullpen if he can build upon Tuesday's eye-opening debut.

Gets call to big-league bullpen The Dodgers selected Hurt's contract from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Hurt will bring a whole lot of swing-and-miss with him as he arrives in the majors for the first time at age 25. He's expected to work out of the bullpen, possibly in a multi-inning role, and could be a consideration for the postseason roster if he performs well. The right-hander had registered a 3.87 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 145:41 K:BB in 88.1 innings (16 starts, nine relief appearances) this summer between Double-A and Triple-A.

Shoving at Triple-A Hurt has a 3.75 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 21 strikeouts and a 50 percent groundball rate in 12 innings across three appearances since getting promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 2.

Impact Hurt has been following an opener since getting to Triple-A, and his already elite strikeout rate has ticked up from 39.4 percent in 65 innings for Double-A Tulsa to 44.7 percent in the Pacific Coast League. His 40.2 percent strikeout rate on the season trails only org. mate Emmet Sheehan (41.4 percent) among minor-league pitchers with over 60 innings pitched this season, and his 28.5 K-BB% also ranks second to Sheehan, despite an elevated 11.7 percent walk rate. Hurt has a fastball that sits in the mid-to-upper 90s along with two swing-and-miss secondaries in his slider and changeup. His walk rate and age (25) are the only knocks against him at this point, and he has logged a career-high 77 innings after tallying 71.2 frames in 2022.

Strikeout rate over 40 percent Hurt, 25, has a 3.99 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and a 98:24 K:BB in 56.1 innings for Double-A Tulsa.

Impact Hurt's 40.5 percent strikeout rate and 30.6 percent K-BB% are second this year for Double-A pitchers behind only organizational mate Emmet Sheehan. Granted, Hurt is 18 months older than Sheehan and unlike Sheehan, he is still at Double-A, but he has good stuff in his own right, with an upper-90s fastball, plus changeup and quality slider.
